View Full Version : Vegas two parter, Barbara and Mark getting married
Bonniegirl 06-26-2015, 05:44 PM Yesterday I wasn't feeling well. 24 hr. bug or something. I was in the bed a lot of the day sleeping off and on. To make a long story short, during ODAAT I was drifting in and out of sleep. S*cked cause they were good eps from what I saw. So did they end up getting married there? And I noticed Julie and Max were in the ep. and Julie was pregnant right? Wished I wasn't nodding off and got the full picture! :(
Could you give me exact details, anyone who saw last night please? ;)
No wedding till season 8 premiere (which should be in a day or two). Yes, J & M were there and J was pregnant. Basically, Mark gets a free trip to Vegas, wedding planning frustrations lead to the idea of a quickie wedding, the whole familys' upset, Ann and Schneider fly in, arguments ensue, calmer heads prevail.

This is all from my memory Bonnie, so I may have left a few things out!)
Mark won a prize from the American Dental Association (yeah okay!) for a trip for two to Las Vegas. He actually came in 3rd place but the other top scoring students had the flu and he won by default.
Meanwhile Ann is planning their wedding at $17.50 cents a head for the reception. Barbara and Schneider are worried about the price and Schneider helpfully suggests his lodge to hold the reception. Ann kindly vetoes his offer and reminds them both that "Ed will kick in on the price".
Barb and Mark go to Vegas in a gorgeous 2 room suite (with Dwayne's misgivings and Annie's blessings.
Barbara gets amorous and wants to consummate their union early but Mark reminds her of her vow to wait till their wedding night. They eventually play cards to see what fate will decide for them. Just then Ann calls and Barbara (who is alternately sexy, smug and whiny in this 2 parter) gets mad at her for something to do with the wedding and tells Ann that she and Mark will marry in Vegas to save money. Ann is furious and hangs up. Offscreen Katherine is none too pleased either and also hangs up on Princess Barbie.
They then invite Max and Julie who show up to find out that the young couple have decided to not get hitched in Vegas after all. Ann storms in on cue (with Dwayne and Alex in tow) and has a hissy fit and Barbara and she argue for what seems like an eternity. Max, Schneider and Mark leave the room and go out gambling. The two squabblers work out their differences while a pregnant, healthy looking Julie confesses to being the offender in the apple core incident when they were little children.
Mark comes back and DEMANDS that they get married like they were going to originally and Barbara and Ann happily comply as that is what they agreed to just before Mark came back.
Side note. Lady Diana gets a mention when Barbara complains that the wedding plans are too lavish. Apparently Romano and Webster are doing very well because suddenly Ann has money to burn for this special occasion and she is still stung from Julie's modest ceremony in the park where she married the best man!
Alex has a very small role in this arc. Some of you might like that. I am probably the only one who finds his presence welcome. I like him for some reason, maybe its the pre teen girl in me, LOL.

I am way too lazy to write all that. You win recap battle :)
Anna Karenina 06-26-2015, 09:15 PM Thanks opus.
As I was watching Barbara act ultra seductively with Mark last night I was thinking of you and your love for Miss Cooper.
Its hard to believe that Gaines and Bertinelli reportedly did not get along in real life as they were so lovey dovey in this episode.
Bonniegirl 06-26-2015, 09:24 PM My Goodness Anna!! You should be working as a TV reviewer!! Your rundown on the show was very detailed! AWESOME!! Thanx!
A shame I missed a lot of that, I love the soap opera type eps on ODAAT!
Thanks opus.

A lot of the stuff on the show I forget, and am just remembering them as AntennaTv rolls them out. That scene, however, has been burned in my brain for 30 years

Barbara got her groove on!:)

Who else didn't get along?

I Know ,I miss her too!:( I wonder what happened to her? I guess she lost interest in ODAAT this time around!
Hardball ep. tonight!!! I swore I thought that Frankie kid was a girl!!! Being there was that other girl on the team, I really thought Frankie was a girl too! And Alex yet again was a screw up in this ep!!!
Max looked cute. :) He LOOKS like a baseball player!!! ;)

I thought this was a silly episode. Max coaching a kiddies baseball team that we never see play, the entire episode takes place in Ann's apartment.
So Max twists his back and becomes immobile when showing Alex how to swing the bat. Then he borrows Schnieder's CB radio so he can coach the game over the radio from Ann's sofa. Then against his better judgment, he listens to Barbara and lets Alex play 1st base, and the team proceeds to lose the game. Just a silly episode all the way around. Thumbs down from me. Maybe they were trying to spoof The Bad News Bears.
This looks like it was designed to be a Max, Barbara, Alex episode. Ann is only seen at the beginning, I didn't see Schnieder at all but it's possible Antenna TV cut his part out.

Schneider wasn't in this ep.at all! And it wasn't explained where he was I don't think! He would be the first one Alex would ask to coach his team!!! Also it was convenient that Max was back in town right than!
I only liked the ep. cause Max was in it, laying on the couch was a plus too!!! ;) :D Showed him and Barbara alone together a lot and the two of them have much more chemistry together than he and Julie or Mark and Barbara!!! Fast forward to season 9, "The nearness of you "!!! What If Max was laid up on the couch alone with Barbara than??? !!!;) :D

I agree there is chemistry between Max and Barbara. There is zero chemistry between Max and Julie.
Michael Lembeck got a raw deal acting in this show, playing the role of a husband who's wife was absent from the show most of the time. And remember, Max and Julie weren't originally supposed to get married, Max was best man at Julie's wedding but then he ended up being her husband. I wonder why that happened, why was Fred rejected? Maybe the producers of the show wanted it that way?
mets82 10-21-2015, 03:06 PM And whatever happened to Fred?

A lifetime of relief and happiness?
1960'sTVfan 10-21-2015, 03:14 PM Morgan Stevens is the actor who played Fred. Maybe the producers of the show preferred Michael Lembeck, so Max ended up marrying Julie instead of Fred. I don't know, just guessing.

And if we follow that logic, Barbara marries this guy-

Believe it or not I have been lurking here all along, I just got out of the habit of posting because I haven't had too much to offer in terms of commentary. I have wanted to pop in occasionally but really just enjoying reading more than writing.
I thought I would lose interest in this show after the first go round but I am still watching until Antenna TV takes it off its schedule.
I have a post I want to write soon about, "Schneider, the Player" and all of his unlikely encounters with strange ladies more than half his age like Jeannie, the pot smoking photographer with a heart of gold and Olga, the over sized Russian basketball player who finds Schneider so incredibly handsome that she wants to defect for him and live with him in his tiny, grungy bachelor pad, LOL.
Only on ODAT.

I missed you too, darling Bonniegirl, with her cute as heck avatars and sweet spirit.
I have been following your posts and find myself agreeing with everything you
say except for the fact that you are not a fan of Scarpelli and I am a little nutty 13 year old fangurl for him, LOL.
I actually tweeted him last week and he answered in such a sweet way and gave me a "big hug". I asked him why they got rid of Nick and he said that he "loved Ron" but the writers just wanted "Ann to be single".
Anyway, I am sorry, I should have chimed in more and will try to be more active in the future.
You and opus and the rest of the crew here make for highly entertaining message boarding. I even go over the Family Ties board now to read your comments about the Keaton clan.:)
God Bless. :)

Hey, retroTVfan4ever!:)
I believe this was part of a string of episodes when Pat Harrington Jr was holding out for a raise. He called them the "worst episodes they ever did"on Behind the Sitcom scandals on Youtube. I don't know if I am allowed to post a link to that. Easy enough to find though.

Yeah, I sense one way or another, I'm sticking with Barb till the bitter end, from making the basketball team to sucking face with her brother in law. I also feel like I'm running out of stuff to say though. But someone always leads me into something.
Bonniegirl 10-21-2015, 06:39 PM Hi Anna!!!!! I posted to you on your Schneider the stud thread!!! We really had quite a message forum going here last time around. We had so much fun!! Besides you Anna, ThomasE isn't around anymore. Also TVfactfan and Josh Larsen with their fighting (which was kind of entertaining sometimes)!!
I think they didn't have Julie marry Fred because it was to really start showing the viewers that Julie was very flaky and even unstable!! She jumped into things very quickly with out rational thought!! Nothing to do with the actors and deciding Michael would be better for her husband, or they would have just casted Michael Lembeck in the first place as her intended! Mack had already been off the show a lot due to her drug problems, so they were really setting the tone to make her out to not be all there in the head, for future storylines. Which it did end up that way, her basically having a breakdown and leaving her baby and husband, the very husband who she left her fiancé at the wedding for!!!
Wawwie 10-21-2015, 10:11 PM And whatever happened to Fred?
Fred is thanking his lucky stars that Ann Romano is not his mother in law. He really dodged a bullet.

Hello
So that's why Schnieder's absent from the Hardball episode and a few others? Harrington wanted a raise? Interesting, thanks for the info.
I would say Schnieder/Harrington deserved a raise. He brought energy to the show and provided most of the humor.
1960'sTVfan 10-22-2015, 11:43 AM And whatever happened to Fred?
I wonder if maybe the producers of the show decided they preferred Michael Lembeck over Morgan Stevens. Morgan's character Fred could have been written out of the show, and the scenario created where Julie ended up marrying Max instead of Fred. Could be possible.

To retroTVfan4ever, I have to believe Bonnie is right. The story they wrote was that Julie meets two guys, becomes conflicted, and ends up marrying Max. She was never intended to end up with Fred.

Could be, that's a possible scenario also.

 I totally agree! He really was the comic powerhouse of the show. Valerie Bertinelli said she was a blank slate and that he taught her everything she knew about comedy.

Hello mets82!
Agreed. He was way too good for her anyway with the way she dumped him at the altar for his so called best friend.
There should have been a scene where they both apologized to him for the callous way he was treated.
Wawwie 10-22-2015, 11:10 PM Valerie Bertinelli said she was a blank slate and that he taught her everything she knew about comedy.
Then he was a lousy teacher, because Valerie Bertenelli was never "funny" on the show IMO.

Thanks for sharing Glenn's response to you. That's the first time I've seen/read anyone from the show give the reason why Ron was let go.
It makes sense. If you're trying to do a show with a main character that's single, you can only take a relationship so far. So, like with David Kane, Nick had a limited shelf life. (Although since Ann and Nick were also business partners, the writers might have been able to keep the relationship going for another year as an on-again/off-again thing.)
Considering that even when Nick was still around, there were several episodes with Schneider/Alex scenes, I wonder if the producers were already testing the idea of keeping Alex around without Nick, with Schneider as father figure.
I liked Nick, but I liked Sam too until he became Ann's husband; then he just seemed annoying and in the way more often than not. Ann just worked better as single, or, at most, with someone but remaining unmarried.
As one who liked Alex (unpopular opinion here, I know) as well as Francine, I was fine with them bringing Alex into the family in Season 7 and having Francine take Nick's place as Ann's business partner. (It was also good to have Julie and Max back that season, even on a part-time basis.)

Thanks for your comments Dave_L  I squeaked like a pre teen when he actually answered me back. Its funny how Glenn and I are the same age now, LOL. My how time flies.
I liked Ann as a married woman until she made a habit of shrieking at her husband Sam just like she did with Ed. It made me want to smack her.
I also liked Alex and Francine. I also thought it was cute when Max and Julie came on as a happy couple. It was so hard to watch Julie go from a vibrant pregnant woman and then end up a malnourished shadow of her former self in the following season.
I wish they had given Alex a more dignified exit rather than having Ann explaining to someone how she had "mixed feelings about Alex going back to live with his mother" and Sam saying somewhat flippantly, "I don't".:( It seemed like a slap in the face to a kid who had spent 3 years on the show and was a really good little actor.
But at least it was better than Nick being unceremoniously killed off and having nobody mourn him or reference him until "Spare the Child".
In tonight's episode Dwayne almost has an accident due to his hearing loss and Ann tells him she doesn't want Alex driving around with him. It would have been a good use of history if Nick's death in a car had been referenced somehow just to keep his memory alive for two seconds.
But the writers and producers motto seemed to be "Out of Sight, Out of Mind."
Anna Karenina 10-23-2015, 02:19 AM Then he was a lousy teacher, because Valerie Bertenelli was never "funny" on the show IMO.
I thought she played her part very well but she wasn't given much of a chance to be laugh out loud funny, per se.
Schneider was the clown and she was a fine "straight" woman, much like MTM.
Although Val could do straight up funny stuff like in the "retirement" shows for example.

During 1972/73, there was this kid David who was in the cast of that PBS kiddie show Zoom. Alex/Glenn Scarpelli sort of resembles David, he's just a few years older.

She was to a point. Last time around she was a regular poster here. But maybe more in the category of poking fun at the show!! But I'd say it's more Wawwie isn't a Ann Romano or Schneider fan !! The others she seemed to like! ;)
I for one love the show, but I find it fun to poke fun of it too sometimes!!! It can be quite cheesy at times!!!
I do find Barbara to be funny though!!! In a subtle way! She had some funny one liners sometimes! When there would be over the top drama going on like say between Ann and Julie, Barbara would come up with something kind of funny to say, very subtle and smile a little! ;)

That was definitely her role in the early days.

You are right about your assessment of me... to an extent. The thing is... that when I was a kid, I LOVED One Day At A Time, but now that I am an adult, I find so much fault with the show. I despise Ann Romano, I loathe Schneider and Barbara is dull to me. Julie always was and always will be my favorite. Julie is the ONLY reason that I will still watch the show. I'm a big Mackenzie Philips fan. :)

Barbara was supposed to the dull one compared to Julie, so Valerie thanks you for the compliment.

I'm just glad this board is still active the second go around. I thought I was going to end up like the guy on the GIMME A BREAK board, except for me it would be making somewhat rambling Barbara Cooper threads just to myself.*

Same with Family Ties!!! Since Antenna started showing that I've been watching, but I noticed there hasn't been a big crowd of new postings going on over there! I posted a little , but without much response.:(
Also, I have missed a lot of eps though. Being on between CHIPS and One day at a time, I'm kind of busy a lot , I have my real life I have to tend to between 7-8 ! Wish it would come on at 9PST!!!!! ;)

I think the big difference there is Family Ties had been running on TV recently AND the whole series is readily available on DVD.

Plus!!! There isn't as much to really make fun of on Family Ties as there is on One day at a time, right?!!!!! It's a sweet show about a family, that gets into some issues and drama, but not crazy over the top stuff and overacting, and characters coming and going, crazy stuff that goes on at ODAAT!!!! :D
mets82 10-26-2015, 04:50 PM Not only that but at least with One Day, the show hasnt been on in ions. Its not like a Seinfeld or The Simpsons where its always on. For some posters, including myself, I hardly remember ODAAT until Antenna TV put it on the air.
Bonniegirl 02-26-2016, 09:55 PM Bumping ap this thread!!! Vegas two parter on yesterday and today! Funny how we started off posting about the Vegas eps. and ended up getting sidetracked!! A lot about the Hardball ep. that was on yesterday! ;)
LOL!! I've been watching The People Vs.OJ Simpson mini series on F/X and Julie's short unflattering "poodle perm" hair in Vegas reminds me of Marcia Clark!!!
