I don't understand why Alex lived with Ann.
Didn't the kid have grandparents, aunts or uncles?
Who would want to live with a judgmental shrew like Ann? Half the time, it seemed like she didn't even care about Alex. No wonder Alex got more annoying, needy and whiny.

Ann is NOT a judgmental shrew! She had very little patience especially with a whiny girly boy like Alex. He acted like a bratty little girl when he did not get his way.

She loved him but he was hard as hell to love. I could care less about Alex and several people would agree with me. He was far from likable.

... which brings up the same question.... If the two were so incompatible, then WHY did Alex live with Ms. Romano???
You never answered the question.

His mother didn't want him to live with her new husband and herself. Alex wanted to stay in school and be with his friends. Apparently dear old Dad's death didn't have much of an effect on either of them. :( They just wanted to do their own thing. So Ann had Schneider knock out a wall and create Alex's secret bedroom that we never got to see. It would have made more sense if he bunked with Schneider, come to think of it.

The writers wanted a younger audience apparently and so they killed off his annoying father and kept the pint sized heart throb.

Alex didn't seem to mourn his father very much, they barely mentioned him. I never heard anything officially but I get the feeling that BF had something to do with him getting killed off so abruptly and coldly and that she also had something to do with Mary Louise Wilson's abrupt push out the door. But its all my speculation...

I hope I provided context for this ridiculous turn of events.

Oh, so that is where Alex slept. I was wondering about that, since the apt. only had two bedrooms.

I guess it would cramp Schneider's style with the ladies if he had a kid living with him if Schneider took Alex in. Schneider only had a one bedroom or was it a studio apt. even?

yeah you are right, Bonniegirl. Schneider couldn't have his meaningless affairs with young, hot women half his age with Alex living there all the time. LOL.

Schneider had a studio apt and a camper. Which Alex promptly burned down. I hope everyone in the building had renters insurance!

Yeah! Alex starting that fire sure wasn't a shining moment for him! :( Good thing Ann didn't call child services and have his A** out of her custody! I hope that didn't sound cold, I'm kind of joking as I posted it! ;)

Schneider's apt. always kind of reminded me of Mel's apartment from Alice ! ;)

We were also talking about where Alex slept considering it was originally a 2 bedroom apartment.

But back on topic, it was weird how his mother didn't want him with her so she decided it would be a good idea to send him to live with his dead fathers short term girlfriend that slapped him across the face not so long before.

Why couldn't they just have had Alex hang around the apt like Schneider while living nearby with his mom?

I felt bad for Ron Rifkin, first they unceremoniously kill his character, Nick off the show and then his son and his former love interest almost NEVER mention him!

Alex's mother per Ann in Spare the Child, didn't "give a damn" about Alex.

Until the show no longer had use for the boy and unceremoniously bounced him back to his deadbeat mom and NEVER mentioned Alex again.

Out of sight, out of mind.

Speaking of the similarities in sets...

As humble as the apt in ODAT was, it was a palace compared to what the Evans family had to put up with. I felt bad for Michael and J.J. having to sleep together on that pull out bed while Thelma got her own fairly sizable bed and room.

I always thought it was weird that Jack Tripper got his own bedroom but the girls had to share but they all paid equal parts of the rent.

I have too much time on my hands to think about this stuff, LOL.

There apartment has the same exact lay out of the Evans Family from Good Times.
The ODAAT apt. and the Good Times apt. were NOT the "same exact" layout. Not even close. On ODAAT, the bathroom was where the master bedroom was on Good Times. The spare bedroom was off to the side and down a hall. In Good Times, Thelma's room was to the left of the bathroom and next to the master bedroom. On ODAAT, the kitchen was sectioned off from the rest of the apartment. On ODAAT, they had an alcove by the window which was also sectioned off from the rest of the apartment. On ODAAT, there was a long, narrow window right next to the front door. The window was covered by a curtain.
The apartment was NOTHING like the Good Times apartment...... don't know what you are talking about.

TVFACTFAN,

Its been at least 30 years but as I remember Ann said he went back to live with his mother and that was that. One throwaway line and poof!

As I recall there was was a National Enquirer story at the time saying GS wanted more money and was a DIVA on the set. I don't know if that was true or not though.

I do know that Glenn and Bonnie were real life buddies and she let him stay with her in her house. Val basically discovered Glenn.

They both were devastated by Bonnie's death and Val said she considered her to be a second mother.

LOL regarding the girls on Threes company sharing the room. Sleeping in twin beds like they were two young sisters! Same with Laverne and Shirley!

Now see I'd want my space (and if I was bringing home a date) I'd elect to buy a pull out sofa and sleep in the living room!

I never wanted to share a space with anyone even at the age of 19. When I was in college to avoid living with other people, I stayed in the freshman dorms all 4 years because I was able to live alone LOL

All my friends lived in houses on campus but I didn't want to live with other men. Guess I'm a weirdo

Not at all a weirdo. I feel the same way, esp. as I get older. Besides my husband, and than even than sometimes I sleep in the guest room because I tend to have insomnia and if I am up and down in the bed all night , I don't want to disturb his sleep.

So yeah, unless you are having "relations" you really get a better nights sleep if you are alone in the room! And like I said If a person is getting up walking around or if someone snores, it interferes with the other persons sleep!

I loved that alcove by the window with the window seat. It was like a little sitting room. IDK why they didn't sit in there, it was so cozy? On a pretty sunny morning I'd sit on that window seat and have my coffee!

Last time around I didn't really understand his "secret room"! But I think they explained it a couple eps ago and I got it!! I think what happened was Schneider knocked a wall down into another apt. where a bedroom was. and made Ann's apt a 3 bedroom than. And the other apt would become a one bedroom I guess!! ;)

Convenient how that worked out huh? The apt. nearest to Ann's just happened to be vacant when Alex showed up at Ann's to move in!!! :D Plus technically wouldn't the Landlord make Ann pay more rent cause it became a three bedroom? Because the other apt .would have to be rented as a one bedroom, and the landlord would lose money!!!

LOL!!! All this for a kid who would soon almost burn down the building, the buildings Super's camper to be destroyed and cause the neighbors pet bird to die!!!!!!

BUMP.

A clear-cut answer that SOMEBODY didn't think of: Ann and Alex DID grow fond of each other, and Alex became sort of a son to her that she never had. It was mostly Barbara who had the idea of letting Alex stay, but Ann was in favor of it because she felt bad for him and didn't want him to move away from his friends at school all of a sudden. Happens all the time in life. Most of the time, if you have a kid who has a friend who has a predicament preventing them from living with their mother/father, the mother/father will take that kid in (the predicament kid's friends) out of guilt sort of. Ann was not a LOATHSOME character. I say that the whole person who started this thread is LOATHSOME and obviously has no love for anybody. Shows what kind of person they are, and Ann was very loving and caring to take Alex in like that. The kid went through a lot with his father's death and everything and would go anywhere if it wasn't with his mother and stepfather. That's the way it was.

If After Alex left the 3rd Bedroom was still there (If Schneider didn't restore the old apartments back), Why Did Ann and Sam stay there in the last season - what would they do with two extra bedrooms they didn't need. I would have moved them into a new (but similar looking - no need to build a new set for 21 shows just slight change the old one) 1 bedroom apartment in the building.

The rent must have been good to stay in 402 :) Plus Sam kept his old place!

Perhaps Bud's successor as producer just assumed no one would notice :)

Yeah!! Probably assumed we wouldn't remember about the third bedroom!! :D

That would have been cool if there was a story line, a couple of eps.where Max moved in with Ann and Sam!! Running away from home, from Julie!! A son in law rather than a Daughter running back to Mother!!:D And Max getting on Sam's nerves!!:D

Real World: Simply put, they were not ready to have Max and Julie back full time (Although by this time Mac was in her "almost-clean" period) so they needed the Character of Alex to balance out the show along with the introduction of Mark, and more frequent appearances by Shelley and Nanette. (People forget Shelley was only a full-season regular for year 8, her other appearances were guest or reoccurring due to plot-lines and cast size)

in Story reason: He lost his father shortly before or after his mother remarried and moved from indy, Ann agreed to take Alex in so he could be back to his old school and friends and have stability back in his life

The Errie part is Ron Rifkin's last episode was the one that Richard Masur came back as David Kane. In that episode, Nick decides he prefers the working relationship and close friendship-support from Ann to a romance with her and David realizes he and Ann have changed in 5 years and you "Can't go home again".

The lack of an episode dealing with Nick's death comes down to the simple fact Lear did it TWICE by then - first James on "Good Times" and then Edith on "Archie Bunker". Both shows were NEVER the same. So having it happen off camera and then only dealing with the aftermath "a couple-three months later" would it protect the show - and it did - it didn't hurt the ratings.

The Show was #11 for Season 6 - The Nick year, was #10 for Season 7 (But clocked in at 22.00 million viewers as season 6 did!) (The Show was also seen in CBS Daytime repeats on most CBS affiliates both seasons as well) & #16 for Season 8. (19.1 Million viewers) (8 had mid-season time change which accounts for the slight drop - remember, CBS STILL wanted to keep the show past Season 9 at this point) The Show also entered Syndication this season with The first 7 Seasons and was a big hit

It was just convent that Alex was old enough to start High School, so a perfect excuse for him to go back with his mother. That simple - a single postcard in the opener of season 9 - which by that time was as far as Val and Bonnie were concerned contractually, the last season. 21 episodes.

The question is which came first - chicken or the egg. Did his agent get him the pilot to "Jennifer Slept Here" first as second position to ODAAT, or did ODAAT refuse the raise request and his agent got him the pilot when his contract wasn't being renewed.

The other question was he even offered at any rate a renewal of what clearly was a 2-year contract extension. I don't think it's a Diva situation, but the money issue for a renewal, especially if Val and Bonnie hadn't made up their minds about ending the show at that point makes sense.

Doing a pilot while on another show would not have been unusual. Clearly his contract wasn't renewed for whatever reason - he claims he LEFT ODAAT to do JSH, not fired. (Which not having your contract renewed would be)
