View Full Version : Antenna TV is credit crunching the show now

Time for me to go back to my recordings from Comedy Gold. I only watched on Antenna TV so I could discuss the show with you guys are the episodes aired. Now that they are crunching credits I will no longer watch it on Antenna TV.

Credit crunching is one step backwards for TV and it is baffling that Antenna TV has decided to do this.

Lord knows I worry about Small Wonder on the weekends. I am making a set of that show. If they crunch the credits for that show then I will have to find a creative way for it to look good on finalized DVDs. Either that or cut the credits all together.

There's finally a complete series set on ioffer with recordings from Comedy Gold. It's $75 but I'd rather pay that than watch Antenna TV with credit crunches.

I wanted to let you know and others if fustrated my plan for the remaining 7/8 Small Wonder episodes as I am guessing they will be crunched.

I am going to record the rest on dvc-pro digital tape, then take it to my editing rooms at work places and edit the standard opening onto perfectly, for the closing I will overdub the closing theme over the beginning audio of next episode/show. So close to a perfect set, Oh well...LOL....

I have been doing great with doing "on the fly" edits with the commercial deletions as it's obvious when they go to breaks, I especially like when certain season 4 episodes go to the freeze frame/title graphic and the voice over by the actors say "SW will return after these messages", surprised they don't cut that out. Anyway when this is done, let me know if you want DVD copies of the final 7 as you already have the finale from "cars & stars weekend".

BTW....I too loved Ann Jillian & both of her series "It's A Living" & the short lived "Jennifer Slept Here"...I have a complete JSH series set I made from some 3/4 inch tapes I had plus aquired some not so good quality episodes from collectors years ago. I know you said you were pleased with the quality of yours, yes old VHS do hold up very well, be careful of course when rewinding as it could come off spool, but as you probably know already, that can be repaired easily. Let me know how good your quality eps are?, again I have a few mint with original commercials, so in the future we can perhaps work out something since we seem to be collecting and have fond memories of these shows.

BTW If you don't know Ann first appeared as "Millie" in the final season 5 of "Hazel" as a secretary in several episodes, these are the episodes that don't contain Don DeFore or Whitney Blake (the same credited on ODAAT, LOL).

Odd that there is a connection to these three series like that "5 degrees of Kevin Bacon" game years ago between Hazel (Ann Jillian acting & Whitney Blake acting to ODAAT creative), Ann Jillian acting (Hazel to JSH) Glenn Scarpelli acting (ODAAT to JSH). A bit confusing but true!

I would love DVD copies of the final 7 episodes if Antenna TV crunches the credits. I am crossing my fingers that it does not happen but Antenna TV seems to be adding more crunches so who knows.

I love the "Small Wonder will return after these messages" voice over before the break. Things like that are usually cut out so I am glad Antenna left them in.

The quality on my JSH episodes are easily a 7 or 8. I was shocked that no one used these tapes since the show went off the air. I have accidentally recorded over several of my favorite shows back in the VHS days that it is amazing that these were never touched. I love that in the digital age you can't accidentally erase your recordings on DVD.

That set appears to be from episodes I have loaned to that seller. I have no problem that he copied them but he should not be making money off of them.

I would never sell other people's sets because it is sort of rude. Anyhow that does not bother me too much because at least people will be able to enjoy this show and in its unedited format.

This show does not depend on continuity so airing out of order is not the issue here. Credit crunching takes away from the show.

I see it there. It doesn't mention Comedy Gold but I see the Canadian TV Rating PG on the photo of it so that pretty much gives it away that it came from Comedy Gold.

Not necessarily...there are sets floating around that were recorded in the mid-2000s from DejaView in Canada that contain Seasons 2-4. I have a set but there is an annoying drone/hum that runs through the audio on alot of the episodes and they are cut episodes as well.

Why do you keep mentioning that? The show is not leaving Antenna TV any time soon.

With the credit crunching that they are doing now I no longer care what airs on Antenna TV. I have dropped them because they are doing that to make more room for commercials.

Once Small Wonder finishes airing I will no longer watch Antenna TV. I stopped watching TV Land when they did that now Antenna TV is driving their viewers away.

As of now, The Jeffersons is only thing I watch on Antenna TV since it has no crunch. Sometimes I catch All in the Family before it if I have time and it has no crunch either. If I have time I might watch One Day at a Time on Sundays, as long as they don't crunch it then, but other than that most other shows are crunched so I won't watch them. I was really looking forward to Family Ties this fall, but if it's crunched then I certainly won't be watching it.

They do something different with Maude. The show came on right after the opening credits at 5pm and then at 5:03 the commercial comes on.

Then the show came back on at the 5:05 mark:crazy:

My problem with that is this is when the channels usually JTS. It's usually the first step to even worse programming. A few months ago I was going to watch a Walker Texas Ranger episode on one channel. (I forget what channel it was). they cut the theme down to practically nothing. I turned the channel. lol Chopping the show up, going from one show to another with no break, cutting the theme song out just irritates me. I'll still watch this channel because some of these shows don't air anywhere else but it's not the same. I'm just afraid of what the future of Antenna TV will be.

We have found that a majority of viewers prefer a quicker transition from one show to the next, which is why we began squeezing back credits. We appreciate your feedback, and will take it under consideration.

Hi. Antenna TV has been crunching the credits of One Day At A Time. I noticed that there seems to be more commercial time as well. I like that the channel used to air shows with the credits intact.

Will Antenna TV continue to credit crunch or will it stop doing that? I hope it will re-instate the credits the way they used to be. Esp. for a show like One Day At A Time that is airing for the first time in several years. I am glad that Antenna TV airs the show.

That's pure BS what they're saying. No one prefers a quicker transition by missing closing credits. Quicker transition my a**. Anyways I wrote someone in charge broadcast media at tribune an email yesterday that says this:
Hello,
I don't know if you are the right person for me to be messaging on this issue, but me and many other people are very unhappy with the closing credits of most shows on Antenna TV being crunched in the left side while the next show or episode starts on the right side. This ruins the whole viewing experience by not letting us see who was in the previous show and it also ruins it by not letting us hear the closing theme. Many complaints have been posted to the facebook page regarding this issue and nothing has been done. Early on, Antenna TV responded by saying most people preferred a quicker transition so that is why they do it. However, I and most others do not believe that to be true. No one there on the facebook page has said they like that practice. In fact, Antenna TV has gone back on their word. In late 2010, Sean Compton did an interview with Sitcoms Online about the launch of Antenna TV and these were his exact words: "We air the shows the way that the distributors supply us. We will do no editing on our end. We also will not be squeezing the end credits nor will we have an Antenna TV bug/logo on the screen during programming." And now on the Sitcoms Online message board, a whole thread of complaints has spewed because of this:
http://sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=336189
I don't know if someone new is in charge or what has happened, but this has been a complete disservice to many loyal viewers including myself. Something needs to be done or Antenna TV will continue to lose viewers, including myself, who do not like having closing credits crunched in the manner they are doing now. Please be sure to have this sent to the appropriate person in charge so that me and other viewers will let the company know how we feel.
Thanks,
D.F.

This lady's response:
Thanks for writing in Daniel, ok for me to share your note with the Antenna TV execs? I’d like to forward it on.

Since then I replied and told her to forward it on to the Antenna TV execs. I haven't heard anything since. I don't know if it will do any good or not but I hope it will be heard.

People just need to stop watching Antenna TV like I have. I watched for Small Wonder but season 4 concluded so I have watched all episodes.

I won' even watch the shows that aren't credit crunched because they would still be getting viewers if I did that. The shows that aren't credit crunched are already on DVD so I can see them anytime in their uncrunched format without having to watch them on Antenna TV.

I am close to leading a boycott against Antenna TV and contacting local stations to drop them before they become like TV Land. Before long they may end up with original programming and reality show if we don't make a stand.

My boycott may go on deaf ears so I may just stop watching and leave it at that

Yeah, please don't start a boycott! I and many people enjoy Antenna TV, credit crunching and all, at least we get to see some old shows that we wouldn't be able to see without Antenna! And I'm sure other people are like me, I don't have the money to go out and purchase a lot of DVD's of old shows I like. So please don't do anything that will take my Antenna off. :(

Now if it gets to the point where they aren't really showing old shows anymore like TVLand than I'd say OK, I'll join the boycott too! But just for credit crunching, I say NAY!!! ;)

Like you said if you really feel that strongly just don't watch it anymore! ;)

I don't have much money to buy DVDs either but I will boycott too because I hate the credit crunches although I still watch the Jeffersons and occasionally All in the Family and Leave it to Beaver since they don't crunch those. But I will probably stop watching altogether once this cycle of The Jeffersons ends. Although I might watch Family Ties if it doesn't have the crunch but if it does I won't then I'll just have to wait until birthday and Christmas and December and shell out the $50 for the complete series set.

As long as they show TV shows that I can't watch other places I'll watch it. I am worried though because this is usually how it starts (changing a channel's format). I don't believe this crap about people loving the crunch credits. I think new people are in charge and they're trying to be like every other channel.

As long as they continue to air shows from the 1960-89 era I don't have a issue with them

I don't believe the crap about people wanting a quicker transition either. I think new people are in charge as well and they likely used to work for cable channels where credit crunching was common.

Sadly Antenna TV will continue to go downhill because you guys plan to continue watching and giving them ratings.

This is what they are expecting folk. Some station exec is probably saying to himself "Wow! We can do whatever we want because people will still watch our channel because of the old shows" so you guys are giving the what they want.

If you want to see these credit crunches and horribly butchered shows to make room for more commercials practice go away then you must take a stand.

I have already contacted my local station to have them consider dropping Antenna TV in favor of the multiple other great local channels (Laff, Cozi, Decades, Buzzr, ect) airing classics

You don't want Cozi. It's even worse than Antenna TV from what I'm told. It has credit crunching as well and sometimes the credits aren't even show at all. Plus the picture quality is horrible and has black bars on the sides. I don't have that channel either and I don't want it. I've got Decades and its alright. I don't usually watch it during the week but they have some good marathons on the weekends. I also wish I could get LAFF and Buzzr. I doubt I would lose Antenna TV because the station I get it on is owned by Tribune.

No you don't want Cozi!! If you think Antenna is bad, Cozi will make you want to jump off a bridge! I watched Here's Lucy over there, Starsky and Hutch sometimes, and Lassie ( which they took off now anyway)! Really bad just like Big Cookie said! :(

Glad I found Lassie on TBN channel on Saturday mornings. They play it all the way through, with NO commercials at all! ;)

Yeah totally, and how the screen is so small because of those black bars, it makes the whole show seem distorted! :( And for me to say that, cause I'm usually not one to complain about those type of oldies channels. They remind me of the old UHF channels on TV before cable when I was a kid . They played a lot of weird and too many commercials and cut the shows too !( It was like if you wanted to see old reruns you put up with that)! And the three major channels , CBS, NBC and ABC didn't do that.

The one thing I can't stand is the sad commercials they play , like the animal abuse and the Cancer center commercials and stuff! :( I grab the remote and turn the channel, cause esp. the animal abuse gets me crying and the Cancer center ones make me worry like Oh sh*t I hope I or my husband and family don't have Cancer )! So that is really my only complaint on Antenna and METV is those types of commercials! :(

Cozi is going to show Simon & Simon, a show I love starting in August. I haven't seen it in years. I guess I have to put up with Cozi's Crazy channel. It's just sad what us classic TV fans have to put up with just to see our classics. :ohno:

I just think boycotting the channel is stupid. I don't know what it gets you. So your cable company drops it which I doubt they will. Then you have no access to the shows. Now if the channel starts changing their format, I'd be right with you. Most of cable TV sucks anyway. It's not like it used to be.

My channel that used to air half of Me-TV switched to Cozi earlier this year. I was mad until I discovered that my This-TV station had switched to Me-TV and now I practically get everything on it. lol So now I get Me-TV, Antenna TV and Cozi. Even though there are things that could be improved on them, at least they're showing classic TV.

The main things I watch on COZI are Hart to Hart, The New Howdy Doody Show, and Charlie's Angels (I know that the Angels are going on hiatus). I've already seen all of the sitcom eps they air, although I'll still put on My Favorite Martian to see Pamela Britton.

I was a little disappointed they're taking off It Takes a Thief because I haven't seen all of the later, mod-hippie episodes...!

There were extremely hot women on ALL of those series!!

My cable provider just added Laff so it is officially goodbye to Antenna TV. If Laff does not butcher their shows too badly I may just be watching that from now on.

Antenna TV does not care about their viewers so why should we care about them. They are depending on you guys to deal with the credit crunching because you guys want to see those oldies not airing elsewhere. The exes are like "They can't watch these shows anywhere else or get them on DVD so they are going to watch us just to see those shows" so I am not going to fall in that trap they are setting.

I do tune in occasionally for Evening Shade but I will probably stop doing that just because of how the network has gone downhill/

Not that I'm aware of unfortunately. Mostly lesser known shows from the 90s. Not really much appeals to me except Empty Nest.

JoshLarson24

The only reason I harassed my cable company for Laff was because of Empty Nest.

Nothing else on the line up appeals to me. I sort of like Grace Under Fire but not enough to record it. I would watch it while it is on but I am not wasting space on my DVR for it.

I just got Laff yesterday morning so I have been watching a lot of Empty Nest. It comes on 3 times a day with 2 episodes back to back. Each airing is in a different season so the 5 am airings are from season 1 and the 10 am airings are from season 6 and the 12 pm airings are from season 7.

We never know what to expect from Laff. They may end up getting more classics down the line from the 70s and 80s

I could see a show like Soap on Laff because it stars Richard Mulligan who also stars on Empty Nest.

The last time Empty Nest aired was on Hallmark and they did not even air every episode. They stopped at season 4 and that is the set currently being sold on ioffer and other sites that sell bootlegs. To my knowledge Hallmark never even aired the ending credits or complete opening credits.

This is why I don't watch it anymore except sometimes on Sunday's when they don't have the credit crunch. I am boycotting all shows with the crunch until they stop and if they don't then goodbye Antenna TV.

And now it's happening on Sundays too. The closing credits were crunched for both episodes tonight. I think this is the 1st Sunday where that's happened since they started doing this.

There was also a set available for the "nearly complete" whole series (that's the one I got from a site). It's not perfect quality, but good enough "watchable" quality if you're a big fan and want to see the show. I do want to get the 4-season package recorded from Hallmark though, since those episodes are apparently great quality.
