View Full Version : Marks' intro
It may be a TV/Movie cliché, but it was still nice that Mark, despite basically every other guy in Indiana* immediately falling for Barbara[for evidence, see, oh, I don't know pretty much any episode of One Day at a Time ], wasn't totally impressed.
*Greg Evigan not included
Bonniegirl 06-19-2015, 02:52 PM So far I don't have a good impression of Mark. Seems like a jerk! Thought that two part ep was a bore! I can truly say now I'm not really diggin' the later seasons of ODAAT nearly as much as I liked the earlier seasons
Anna Karenina 06-19-2015, 03:33 PM I enjoyed the banter between Barbara and Mark. He was a cutie but his jacket didn't fit him very well. He reminded me of Timothy Hutton a little bit.
Is it true that Boyd Gaines and Valerie Bertinelli did not get along very well? You wouldn't know it from their scenes they had such good chemistry.

You did? I didn't really find them to have good chemistry. Boyd Gaines doesn't rock by boat apparently, not that he's ugly, he's not bad looking at all, just doesn't do a thing for me!
mets82 06-19-2015, 04:53 PM I missed parts of last night's episodes. How did Mark and Barbara meet? I did see when she got mad at him for not bringing her home, which I thought was a sucky move on Mark's part. The thing is if part 1, they were arguing, how did they fall in love during part 2's episode. I mean I watched the end of part 2 and I still dont get it. Why did she even go to see Mark in the first place?
You know I didnt like how they intro'd Mark. Its the same thing they did with Nick and Max. Max didnt like Julie and vice versa, Ann didnt like Nick and vice versa and poof, just like that, they fall in love. I hate that. How about intro'ing them actually dating without the hate and have a natural romance?

She wanted him to take her home for a date with another guy, so I'm on his side there.

I wasn't impressed with Mark either. It was very rushed. On their second date they're talking marriage.
I also agree the earlier seasons of the show seem a lot better, imo.

A couple of episodes earlier, Barbara was making out and in love with a guy she had met 10 minutes ago at the airport. Compared to that , 2 dates is an eternity.
TeeVeeCloset 06-19-2015, 09:41 PM Yes it is a fact that Boyd Gaines & Valerie did not get along very well, plus his character was written as a kind of overbearing jerk.
Valerie was just starting to date Eddie, she admits her bad personal habits in those days never got out, while Mac kept getting into trouble. Now Valerie never came close to Macs' addiction problems, just pot, some partying once involved with Van Halen rock scene. She stuck out that marriage and was so loyal to Eddie during his only drug use problems. But back to on topic.
I can't get into exactly the reasons she and Gaines didn't mesh well off set, I am hopefully going to get some insight as the long researched book I have been working on for 3 years keeps coming along. But Valerie doesn't like to bash people and I respect that, so I have to be very delicate with questions. I also don't want my book to be a tabloid type. So I stick to the character which matched the man.
Mr. Gaines was beginning his acting career but television was not his dream potential, the stage & theater was (Hence he has won 4 Tony Awards) and has done many voice-overs for TV. So his lack of even appearing in a separate reflection taping like many other cast members in the reunion special, shows Valerie and probably Gaines even didn't care to reflect on what they consider not the happiest of times.
He and Hessman as I've said before were not even mentioned or seen in clips on the 2005 CBS reunion show.
If you didn't like his first date treatment, wait till he can't decide to stay with her when she can't conceive, he doesn't even make a promised phone call.
He chooses to finish a golf tournament on his wedding day!
Barbara returns to college, but there is hardly ever any personal scenes of love, they are often seen in bed or on couch studying.....LOL
Hence the famous episode "The Nearness Of You" Season 9 when Barbara & Max crush on one another!
BTW Opus, just to you, total respect but I hardly call "Barbara" being "In Love" in "Airport", simply they all met "potential dating partners" and Barbara's was on a departing flight as they were awaiting Ann's arrival flight. Her story was just ironic and we have all met a stranger & had instant fun unknown chemistry.
Valerie was offered the first spin off re: married life with "Mark", she quickly nixed it, so the "Schneider" pilot was created (technically last episode) after "Off We Go".
I first met Valerie during tapings of her second ill fated sitcom return NBC's "Cafe Americain", have them all on DVD. Except for Valerie, poor writing/casting despite having Jimmy B. directing the pilot. I was in the VIP section next to her best friend Faith Ford (Murphy Brown). After every scene she went over to Faith and went over things. She was so nervous.
It's funny, because Valerie basically always was "America's Sweetheart" (meaning liked by both male & females) in the tradition of Sandra Dee and others.
After "ODAAT" Valerie was the queen of the TV movie, but until "Hot In Cleveland", both sitcom attempts "Sidney" & "Cafe" failed. Yet she shined in "Touched By An Angel" as a supporting player. Seems she is best in TV series form with an ensemble cast.
Her "Finding John Christmas" CBS movie was extremely highly rated, even when reran on CBS Christmas night a few years back.
TeeVeeCloset, I'm still first in line for the book, despite our Airport disagreement. But really, I was just overstating for some humorous effect, although the episode does contain the line "Schneider, I think I'm in love", key word being think of course. I always wondered if after Mark if Steve's card was still lying around somewhere.
Next time you see Valerie, tell her my biggest TV regret is that despite being a sitcom fan, I didn't watch Sydney or Cafe Americain. I could have been more supportive.
Edit- I could debate you on how they both reacted in Barbara's Crisis, but I'll skip it for now. However, for the golf/wedding thing,he should be forced to bunk with Alex for a while.
Bonniegirl 06-20-2015, 12:50 AM I liked the guy at the airport better for her than I did Mark! That seemed to be a more natural attraction and more romantic than sarcastic Mark and that weird first date and his "proposal" on their second date!
As Mets82 pointed out too, this is the THIRD time this has been done and with all the three ladies on ODAAT starting out arguing, not getting along and than finding they were really in love. Max. Nick and now Mark!
YAWN!!! BORING!!!

I hadn't even thought about that trend. Did Ann hate Marks' father at the beginning too?

Yes Ann didn't hate him, but they are "put together" by both Barbara & Mark, it is clearly demonstrated that Sam and his free spirit attitude was a bone of contention with Mark in his youth and yes all through Ann & Sam's courtship and eventual move to England. In the episode "The Good Life" #178 2/20/83, Sam contiplates buying a house behind Ann's back on a South Pacific Island and wants her to live there! Without any regard to her present business, children, grandchild, mother and personal life.
I have mentioned Bonnie self-cancelled the program (as it was still in the top 10) over loosing a battle with the marriage of "Sam" & "Ann". It totally went so far over the series premise, which was long gone anyway. So the mutual agreement was that Ann would get a tremendous business opportunity overseas and "Sam" the husband would naturally follow her being a free spirit.
Bonniegirl 10-26-2015, 02:21 AM Here is the thread that first mentions Mark's jacket that doesn't fit him right!!!
And I take my one post back!!!! I do dig the later seasons, around now and soon to come up when Max is in the show a lot, and I got to liking Mark ! I like when the son in laws were featured!!! And I LOVED when the four of them Barbara, Mark, Julie and Max rented that house together!!!
mets82 10-26-2015, 04:47 PM Mark grew on me as the show went on but his debut left a lot to be desired.

Yep!! ;) Like we said before ODAAT tends to like to bring in the love interests in a strange way!!!
