Last night Game of Thrones bid us adieu for the next ten months in typical shocking and brutal fashion. The season finale, “Mother’s Mercy,” provided no small amount of chatter about some of the key character’s fates. One of the more interesting parts of season five was the fact that it began to diverge from the book’s canon in bigger ways. Despite what some book readers may tell you, there is no shortage of ways the series has diverged from George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series since the beginning. But season five took some bold leaps, including some that may take place in the books but have not yet. This week we’re going to celebrate the HBO series by looking at some of the best ways that the show has made changes to the novels to better fit the TV format.
Caveat: To clarify this, when I refer to good changes from the books I am not saying that the way some of these things were written by Martin came off poorly. In some cases that may be so, but most of these changes have been done to better fit an episodic television format for one reason or another. Those were the kinds of changes that most appear on this list. It is also worth noting that I did not include anything that may not have happened yet in the books, but were depicted in the show. On the other hand, I did allow for things that may not have happened yet on the series, but should have by the way the books are laid out. I can’t predict everything David Benioff and D.B. Weiss might still do, after all.
