Can anyone recommend some other good shows/movies that feature Joseph Campanella? I prefer other roles that are similar to Ed Cooper. I like seeing Mr. Campanella play the good guy. Although, he can certainly be convincing as the bad guy too. He played lots of them in westerns, etc. I am primarily looking for Ed Cooper-type roles.

I always liked the Ed character, and lot of that has to do with the actor. If someone else had played Ed, he wouldn't have been the same. Joseph Campanella is tough and tender at the same time, a fantastic quality!

Does anyone know if Valerie Bertinelli ad Mackenzie Phillips were close with their TV father? I know he wasn't a regular, but he appeared through the years. They were very close on-screen, and I just wonder if this is carried over from real life. I'm sure Mr. Campanella liked playing the father of two girls because he had all sons. I saw him and his wife Jill on a game show once. Jill was pregnant, and they were hoping for a girl because at that time they had 4 boys. They went on to have 7 boys I believe. He said on that game show that they had even thought about adopting a girl, but I guess it never worked out.

From all accounts, Joseph Campanella is a genuinely nice guy and a good family man.

Joseph Campanella was in a few episodes of Mama's Family as Mama's night school teacher. He was also in the Golden Girls as a police officer. Those are the only other "sitcom" roles that I know of.

I've only seen him portraying a good guy.

And he was only on 8 episodes of ODAAT, so he obviously did a lot with only a little here.

You never saw him in Mama's Family or Golden Girls? He was sweet in Mama's Family and super hot in Golden Girls. I adore Joseph Campanella. I think he was quite a hunk back in the day.

OK. Well, it doesn't hurt to put up his career here. Maybe someone will find something they like.

I love him so much as Ed. In fact, his portrayal made Ed so good that it was hard to see why Ann would leave such a good man. He was an excellent father to Julie and Barbara and was in most ways a good husband to Ann. Ann's other love interests couldn't hold a candle to him.

Valerie should have got him on Hot in Cleveland. He could have hooked up with Betty White.

I think Ann was an ASS for leaving Ed. Ed was a total hunk, a good provider, a wonderful father and I'm certain he was a loving husband. Ann just uprooted her teenage daughters to a new city for her own selfish needs. Poor Ed! Well, I guess he was better off without her. It's just too bad it cost him his children.

Still , would have been a nice reunion..........

Every other major "one dayer" did it, except her husband, who she apparently didn't like.

It would be a reunion, because he probably already knew Betty White from his time on Mama's Family.

I felt so sorry for Ed in the episode "The Car". He was missing so many things in his daughters' lives. Ann took them away from him. He stayed in Logansport, and she is the one who moved! So what if he was a little domineering. He didn't do it in a bad way because his heart was always in the right place. He only wanted to take care of his family. Julie and Barbara adored their daddy. I judge him by the way his daughters felt about him. You could tell that he had been a wonderful father to them when they were little.

Out of curiosity, did you like the Golden Girls, because that's what H in C reminds me of, "older" women living together, lots of sex plots.

Hot In Cleveland.... the show SUCKS in my opinion! It's so not funny and crude. I lost a lot of respect for Betty White and the rest for being involved in such a ridiculous show. All of the characters are boring whores. The biggest whore is played by Valarie Bertinelli. The so called plot lines are boring, pointless and lead nowhere. The writing is sloppy.

The show should have been cancelled six years ago after the pilot.

Melanie is the biggest whore....

seems like all of these women are sleeping with someone different each week.
one week Melanie is in love with her cousin....
next week she is sleeping with some guy named Dane.
recently, she sleeps with some guy who causes her to dress in a trash bag.
weeks ago, Melanie slept with bob who is now engaged to Joy.
about a year ago, Melanie slept with a total stranger in an elevator when she was visiting Maddie in Manhattan.

Melanie is definitely the most whorish.

BTW, I love The Golden Girls and in no way does it remind me of the fluff that is Hot in Cleveland.

Joseph Campanella was in 3 episodes of Mama's Family: "Teacher's Pet", "I Do, I Don't", and with a smaller part in "Pomp and Circumstance".

I think for a lot people Hot In Cleveland is "the new Golden Girls". It's the same basic concept...four middle-aged or older women coming together to live in a same house, with a tart-tongued elderly woman. In their elemental ways Victoria is the "Blanche", Joy is the "Dorothy", Melanie is the "Rose", and Elka is the "Sophia". As for the "looseness" of the characters on the show, that's what TV people think today's audiences want to see: SEX SEX SEX.

I enjoyed watching it, but of course will always prefer GG. And HiC makes me laugh a lot more than ODAAT does, lol, though ODAAT is finally making me laugh some now that it's not as much of a "dramedy" as its early days.

I recently saw Joseph Campanella on Quincy. He played a police lieutenant. He was great. I actually prefer him in dramatic roles. I like him in comedy too, I like the man a lot. I agree with Wawwie, what a hunk! He really seems hunk-ish when he's playing a cop or some dramatic type part!

I wonder why he never had a starring role? His own TV show? Guest starred on millions of things, he needed his own show!

I wish they had made him a regular on ODAAT, or at least a semi-regular. I wanted more Ed episodes, and I wish Julie and Barbara's relationship with their father had been given greater depth.

Wouldn't you love to have a romantic evening with Joe Campanella? Being he's Italian, I bet he's romantic. Candles , wine , Dean Martin music playing ! Speaking of HOT Italians, Dean Martin was really HOT too!!! ;)

I wonder why they made Ed's character to not be Italian? Instead they made Ann be Italian! Which doesn't make sense , she doesn't even look Italian, yet Joe who really is Italian, they made his character be Anglo!

On that game show I saw him and his wife on, he seemed like a great husband!! He came across as very warm, loving, and easy-going. They have been married for over 50 years now!! He said on that show that they both wanted a daughter. Too bad they never had one, just kept having sons!! Yes, I also think they should have made Ed's character Italian. That would have made more sense. After all, both he and Valerie are Italian in real life so it would have worked very well.

Yes, Dean Martin was also a super hot man! I also agree with you about the Italian thing. Ann Romano does not look Italian at all. They should have made her Ann Cooper and they should have made Ed be Ed Romano. That would have made more sense.

So in keeping with the show premise, the girls would have been Julie and Barbara Romano?

I just saw an episode of "The Doris Day Show" that he was in, and he was super awesome in that!! He acted a lot like Ed Cooper in that role, just a younger version. He actually played a guy who was supposed to be a con man, but he ends up doing the right thing in the end. He is very sweet with Doris and is good with her two kids.

Yeah , there wasn't any reason why Ann needed to be Italian as far as I can see! The only time was when her father was in a couple eps. , he looked and acted Italian. He reminded me of Laverne DeFazio's Dad! LOL!! :D Was Ann supposed to be 1/2 Italian maybe? Cause Katherine /Ann's mom didn't look at all Italian either!

Yeah Ann should have had the maiden name Cooper, and be Ms. Ann Cooper and Ed should have been Ed Romano and the girls Julie and Barbara Romano! ;)
