"Fringe", "Sleepy Hollow" star John Noble has joined the cast of CBS drama "Elementary" as a series regular for the upcoming fourth season, playing Sherlock Holmes’ wealthy, estranged father.

The character has been referenced in past seasons as being instrumental in Sherlock’s first stint in rehab three years ago and in pairing his son with Joan Watson, his former sober companion, now his current investigative partner and friend.

In the Season 4 premiere, Mr. Holmes arrives in New York City to deal with the aftermath of his son’s recent relapse.

John Noble Debuts as Sherlock's Father — Exclusive First Look

Sherlock Holmes’ father is coming to "Elementary" — and EW has the exclusive first look.

John Noble will make his debut in the new season as Morland Holmes, Sherlock’s (Jonny Lee Miller) estranged father, who was en route to New York after learning that Sherlock had fallen off the wagon.

“Once he arrives, Sherlock does not appreciate the attention or the distraction that his dad represents,” executive producer Rob Doherty says.

“For him, it’s too little too late. This is a father and a son with a very complicated history. I’d say for at least a couple decades, Sherlock’s father has been out of sight, out of mind. This is going to be a big adjustment for Sherlock to have dad nearby.”

"Elementary" returns Thursday, Nov. 5 at 10 p.m. ET on CBS.
