I have recently gone back and watched some of the episodes from the last couple of seasons, and I had forgotten how horrible they were. Season 9 was atrocious. It felt like a completely different show. The only episode from season 9 that was good was "Off We Go", which should have been done a couple of years before. By season 5 the show really was starting to run its course. Julie and Barbara weren't in high school anymore, and even though Barbara still lived with Ann it wasn't the same. The show was in is glory years when the girls were in high school, and Ann was making her mark in her career, etc. This show probably could have gotten 5 quality seasons. Why not call it quits and go out on top?

I hate when shows run on too long and become very bad and almost unwatchable. "All in the Family" was notorious for this. It definitely should have ended when Mike and Gloria moved to California. The episode where they left would have been the ultimate series finale. But no, that show went into a 9th season which was horrible and even spin-offs that were even more horrible. "Leave it to Beaver" ended just in time. Actually, it probably should have only lasted 5 seasons rather than 6 like it did, but its last season was still high quality.

Another thing that bothered me was that the wardrobes became too glamorous in the later years, glamorous to a point that the show no longer had a realistic feel to it. It was so realistic in the beginning because their everyday dress was ordinary, and the furniture ordinary. All shows that ran into the mid-1980s were guilty of these stupid makeovers.

"One Day at a Time" should have ended with maybe Barbara going off to college, Julie getting married and even having the baby, and possibly Ann deciding she was finally ready to get married again, and then all 3 going their separate ways. They certainly could have had a better ending for Julie. Maybe they could have had her move back to Logansport to be close to Ed. Something better could have been done. Doing that to Julie's character made Ann's character seem like a failure in a way, that she couldn't do a better job with Julie. And, I am glad the show ended before they could shift the focus to the two couples living in that house. That was so boring! Barbara should have gone to a 4-year university. Isn't that what Ann hoped for her girls, that they would find their own identities first before getting married? That would have made more sense. Maybe end with Barbara leaving the nest for college.

Even if everything else was left the way it was, the "Off We Go" episode should have happened in season 8, and there never, ever, ever, ever should have been a season 9!!!!!

The 9th season was horrible. The show was not quite same after MacKenzie Phillips firing the first time. To me One Day at a Time should have gone off after the 8th season. And that was stretching it because the show was showing it's age then. Plus I did not like how Ann did not take Sam's last name. I could have accepted Ann Romano-Royer. I could have accepted that better.

I can't comment on S9 because I don't know whether I ever saw any of those episodes. I watched this show in junior high and high school mainly because that's what my mother wanted to watch, and she took charge of the television at night. By S9 I was in college, so if I was watching anything (versus studying) it was probably another channel. That said, I agree with everything else julietx posted. I agree about Leave It to Beaver (I'm watching it now -- a S6 episode). Beaver is one of the rare instances where the quality was maintained until the very end. Yes, it only went on for six seasons, but they were producing 39 episodes a year for a total 234 episodes, a number that would take ten years to achieve these days. So that makes it even more rare that they were able to maintain the quality.

As a rule of thumb, S5 is about the right time for any sitcom series to pull the plug. That's what happened with The Dick Van Dyke Show, even though it was still very popular (158 episodes produced in those five seasons). The Mary Tyler Moore Show ended in S7 with 168 episodes. The show was still top notch and won the Best Situation Comedy Emmy that year (1977), but the cast decided to go out on top. All in the Family, yes, should have ended when the Stivics moved to California. The show already started to decline in S6 when Mike and Gloria moved to their own house. S5 would have been the perfect time to end the show, but most definitely it should not have gone past S8 when Mike and Gloria left. And Archie Bunker's Place should never have happened.

I havent seen season 9 except for the marathon where they showed them. You know its tough to keep a show fresh especially when one of the main characters, Julie, had to leave the show twice.

Btw, I'm watching season 6 and do they ever mention where Julie and Max are? I must have missed it but when I'm watching they never mention them. Also, the Ron Rifkin character was a jerk. He comes off like a smug, ass, imo.

I disagree. I love Season 9. And I love that the wardrobes became more glamorous. The furniture was still ordinary and I see nothing wrong with the clothes looking better. It was still realistic. People upgrade their wardrobes and furniture all the time. It's very realistic.

watching season 9 now and these eps are trash. The ep with Tony Romano and send in the clowns, Schnieder turning 50 Baby Love. There was no other season with so many trash eps

Season 9 was not the best but its the best season 9 of any other series. Believe it or not but the network wanted a season 10. Bonnie and Valerie wanted to end at season 8 but the network convinced them to do season 9 and they did. The network wanted another season but they said no.
Its not as bad as season 7 of Golden Girls or season 9 of Roseanne. Its actually pretty good for a season #9.
