Incidentally, all of the confusion and chaos that occurred in this episode was the fault of the Professor and not Gilligan.

1) He never initially told anyone why he thought the island was sinking.
2) He was relying on a stick to measure the height of the water in the lagoon instead of checking the water level in relation to the natural landmarks of the island such as the rocks, trees etc.
3) He never bothered to ask any of the castaways if anyone had moved his stick.

Truth be told, he was the one who should've been cleaning up the mess and not Gilligan.
