With David Letterman staying at CBS, what will ABC do to compete in the 11:30 ET time slot now that it has completely alienated Ted Koppel? How about signing fictional alien/'80s icon ALF to do a talk show?

Paul Fusco, the man behind the scenes (and the fur) of the not-so-cuddly puppet, says why not? "He still has a lot to say," he told the New York Daily News. After all, ALF is back in the public eye: He starred in a Super Bowl commercial, and he's participating in NBC's 75th-annversary special in May. The goofball character starred in his own NBC series from 1986 to 1990.

Fusco is pitching the talk-show idea to several networks and syndicators, including ABC. "We broached them a while back, but management has changed three times since we talked to them," he told the newspaper. "We have not spoken to them recently."

The show would feature ALF "talking to the people of this world that are looking for their 15 minutes of fame," he told the News. "It's the people you'd read about in the National Enquirer and Star, the real people that claim to have been abducted by aliens, that claim to have grown a squash in the shape of Elvis, the psychic pet heroes. Think of how ridiculous, how desperate it would be for these people to go on a talk show and be interviewed by a puppet."
