Kelly LeBrock was “the woman in red”. When Anthony Michael Hall employed weird science to create his idea woman, it was LeBrock who stepped out. She even had to remind us not to hate her for her beauty. LeBrock was definitely a model first and an actress second. But her acting career stalled out following her marriage to a high profile action star. When that marriage fell apart, LeBrock went into hiding?

What the hell happened?

In 1985, LeBrock played another perfect woman in John Hughes’ teen sex comedy, Weird Science.

Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith played two high school losers who never made it with the ladies. They decide to rectify the situation using computers. Since no one understood computers in the 80’s they were magical devices that could do pretty much anything in movies including creating super models out of thin air.

Bill Paxton played Mitchell-Smith’s abrasive older brother, Chet. And Robert Downey Jr. appeared as a high school bully. Downey was something of a prankster on the set. He and co-star Robert Rusler joked about defecating in people’s trailers throughout the shoot. Eventually, they decided to make good on their promises. Rumor has it they defiled LeBrock’s trailer although Downey later clarified it was actually the trailer of another female co-star. Hughes questioned the entire cast about who was responsible. When asked, Downey denied pulling the prank, but said he wished he had.

The title of the movie comes from an old EC Comics series. The story is loosely based on a comic book story titled Made of the Future. Hughes, who was quite prolific in the 80’s wrote the script for Weird Science in just two days! LeBrock almost turned down the movie because she was vacationing in France. She said she was “having too much fun riding horses on the beach”.

Reviews were mixed and the movie was a disappointment at the box office. Weird Science opened in fourth place behind Fright Night. In spite of its so-so performance, the movie has developed a cult following over the years. It inspired a TV show that ran from 1994-1998 in which Vanessa Angel played LeBrock’s role. Recently, there has been talk of a remake.
