View Full Version : Does Anyone Ever Miss VHS?
Flying Dutchman 05-09-2015, 03:10 PM I know Video tape/VHS is outta date now, and seems like a dinosaur. But does anyone ever miss the simplicity of VHS? Some of today's DVDs force you to watch the previews before you can get to the movie and I hate that. You can't jump to main menu, it won't let you. You can't skip over the previews and in some cases, you can't even FF over the previews. And I am so sick of the advertisements on all of today's DVDs for BluRay HD. Not all DVDs are like that, but many are. It's like. OKAY! Let's just get to the movie I want to watch why don't we? I know we have Netflix that let's us get right to the movie without all the previews, but this thread is about DVD against VHS.
With VHS, you could atleast FF over the previews, or even guess the spot over the start of the movie and do a quick FF.
And this is my biggest gripe about DVD vs VHS. 1 small scratch, just 1 and the DVD is ruined. Yep it's time to buy a new one. VHS? If there were one little scratch, or even crinkle on the tape, you could still watch the movie. Even if the tape broke, u could easily repair it. Try that with DVD. I have spent so much money on replacement DVDs because of a little scratch, or mark on it. It's like they are making the DVDs to be a scratch magnet at a touch anymore. It is these very things that make me miss VHS so bad sometimes.
Furienna 05-09-2015, 03:18 PM VHS was good. :)
Janice 05-09-2015, 03:22 PM I miss taping tv shows and movies to VHS tapes.
Bonniegirl 05-09-2015, 03:23 PM Yes ! VHS seemed easier and also I'm finding some old movies on Amazon only come in VHS not DVD, and I don't have a working VCR !
Evil Zebra 05-09-2015, 03:26 PM YES... I miss it because I have some awesome VHS tapes of wrestling shows and the Mike Douglas shows that I was on..... and never had them transfered over to a DVD.......

I haven't had problems skipping the previews. One some disks the second a preview starts I can either skip to the next preview and be rid of them in a few seconds, or just press "Disk Menu" to get to the program.
On many disks I can start a show at "Chapter 2" then go back to the start, avoiding the "FBI Warning" which otherwise can't be F-Fed through.

The DVD of Bruce Almighty is practically "You HAVE to watch these previews or you can't watch your movie"! They might as well point a gun at you!
I rarely have DVD scratch problems, I clean mine with rubbing alcohol or soap and water.
DJM77 05-09-2015, 07:12 PM I still tape things on VHS and I don't intend on stopping anytime soon.
Penny Lane 05-09-2015, 08:40 PM I still use my VCR almost everyday. I have a lot of stuff on tape that I still watch regularly. Stuff that I recorded in the past. It's fun watching old commercials from 20-25 years ago!:)
dakert 05-09-2015, 10:30 PM No, because I still use and watch vhs stuff

Also Staples sell a cleaner for discs that are scratched or whatever and I'm sure other places also do. No need to buy a new one.
Flying Dutchman 05-10-2015, 12:24 PM Thanks Treky. I'll check that out. sure would save me money.
tv star collector 05-10-2015, 02:16 PM I still watch both DVDs and VHS tapes (got a new VCR not too long ago) ... but I do miss taping one show while watching another (because my TV is connected to my DVD player). That's why I hate when the networks schedule two shows I like opposite each other!
OH Nuts! 05-10-2015, 03:07 PM I only watch VHS for tapes that couldn't be dubbed to DVD. I don't miss VHS at all. Goodbye and good riddance. But haven't moved on to anything Blue Ray yet. If you take care of your DVDs by keeping them in wallets or jewel boxes you'll never have a problem. 97-98% of my DVD scratches seem to respond to a good cleaning with rubbing alcohol. This being said though, if you like VHS and it works for you, then stay with it. But DVDs work much better for me.
Mace Dolex 05-10-2015, 04:14 PM I still have movies not on DVD in VHS format.
Furienna 05-10-2015, 04:21 PM True, everything isn't avaible on DVD.
Torgo 05-10-2015, 05:13 PM Thanks Treky. I'll check that out. sure would save me money.
I use a SkipDR. It rebuffs the surface removing the scratch. It's great to have as I buy a lot of used DVDs.

Torgo 05-10-2015, 05:15 PM I still collect VHS, and still collect laser, but I do like DVDs/Blu Rays because they take up less space on the shelves.
treky 05-10-2015, 08:30 PM Thanks Treky. I'll check that out. sure would save me money.I can't believe you never heard that before!:)
Flying Dutchman 05-10-2015, 08:44 PM I can't believe you never heard that before!:)
I haven't heard of it. Guess I wasn't paying much attention

I'll purchase Multi-Disk Cases from http://supermediastore.com to increase the storage space for my mammoth collection. I'll make my own labels for these cases, here's a collection of labels for the sides of these cases. (Please note that some of these are "Homemade DVDs"). :D

KurtfromPitts 05-13-2015, 11:01 AM Not me, I still have it.
Regulus 05-15-2015, 01:38 AM One thing I like about VHS is I can buy them at Yard Sales for PENNIES on the dollar. About 500 of my movies are on VHS along with about 15 TV Series. As long as I can play them I have no plans to replace them with DVD or Blu-Ray. About 50 of my movies were released on VHS only, why they didn't release them on DVD is a good question. BTW some of my finds sell for three-digit figures on The Big River's "Marketplace" so if you plan to sell a VHS Movie or TV Series (As much as they take up space) at a Yard Sale you might want to check out The Big River first, to make sure the tapes you are selling isn't a collector's item!
