After watching the first three seasons of One Day at a Time on Antenna TV and I can finally see that it's more of a dramedy than a comedy. Every episode has some kind of drama involving the Julie and Ann arguing about something. So now I can see now why it had low sales on DVD sales because this is the type of show only watch once due to all the drama and little comedy. So that's probably why the show did so well on CBS because it kept people wondering what was going to happen from week to week to week with all those two and three part episodes. So what would make someone buy this on DVD when it's more drama than comedy? I don't even plan to watch this show again once the cycle is complete on Antenna TV because there are not a lot of funny moments. lol It's an interesting show that hold your attention but after you seen all the episodes how can you watch all of that drama again? lol

I think you're wrong about that. One Day at a Time is one of those shows that people are begging DVD companies to be released as a complete series. I know more people who want ODAAT over any other show to be released. The first couple of seasons were kind of boring so that is why the DVD sales were not as good. If they kept releasing the show there would certainly be better sales for the later seasons because Julie was not the primary focus.

Like every show some people like it and others don't. It has a huge following and people loved the storylines. All of Norman Lear's shows were kind of dramedy because they blended elements of drama and comedy.

I know Roc is not by Norman Lear but that show was excellent and you saw a perfect blend of comedy and drama. The characters were nominated or won a few times because shows like this and One Day at a Time show us a peak at our own lives.

I'd rather see a show like One Day at a Time than some show that makes no sense and everyone lives these perfect lives with no arguments. As much as I love those types of shows I would stick with the Norman Lear genre over any other genre.

I call B.S. on that. Nothing's better than pure comedy. Making people cry is easy. Making them laugh is what's hard.

Maude was the same way which is why I can't look at that show anymore. It's very interesting the first time but it's not a show I can watch over and over like All in the family and the Jeffersons because it didnt have a lot of fun episode titles.

The only comedy you see is from the supporting character every year once in a while. When it comes to Ann and Julie they are not making anyone laugh just involved in dramatic situations.

You have not seen enough of the show if you think this way about the show TVFACTFAN.

The show captured realism and sadly that is the way we live our lives. We will always have more drama in our life over comedic moments.

It's a interesting show but it just doesn't offer that classic comedy moment that allows you to escape reality.

That's very interesting because I consider One Day at a Time the first crack in Norman's Lear's esteemed career as a producer. It is to me the first sign of the decline of his genius, the beginning of the end. Diff'rent Strokes and The Facts of Life further continued the decline. Yes, I know they were all three long-running series, but they were very much shows of their time. They are not timeless classics with iconic, unforgettable characters who became, and remain, part of our culture, like his earlier series: Sanford and Son, All in the Family, Maude, The Jeffersons, and Good Times (although they botched GT by getting rid of John Amos.) I watched One Day at a Time in its original run because my mother loved it and she controlled the TV set at night, but I was never very crazy about it. And I absolutely couldn't (and can't) stand The Facts of Life. But those earlier series, especially All in the Family, I can never get enough of.
