8. Dharma and Greg

The whole manic pixie dream girl thing started way earlier than the term itself was coined to describe Kirsten Dunst’s character in the romantic comedy Elizabethtown. In fact, this show had something even more obnoxious: a manic pixie dream wife named Dharma played by Jenna Elfman. The premise is that Dharma and Greg are two completely ill-suited lovers who inexplicably fall madly in love anyway and get married on their first date. Greg is a super uptight and ambitious lawyer; Dharma is a free-spirited hippie yoga teacher.

The entire plot of the show is her embarrassing him repeatedly while you wonder how the hell these two people manage to stay married to each other. Watching cringe-inducing clips like this one make you wonder how Elfman managed to get three Emmy nominations for her role. It will also make you wonder why on earth Bob Dylan of all people decided to make a very weird guest appearance on the show in 1999, during an episode in which Elfman’s character decides to pick up the drums.

No way was this a bad show...it's a hoot!

That is only one person's opinion. And despite that this show never became one of my favorites, I liked it well enough when I happened to watch it. The same thing goes for "Clueless", even though I can understand that many fans of the movie would have missed Alicia Silverstone in the lead role. "Friends" and "Home Improvement" were also big hits for many years, so yeah, it is all a matter of taste.

I liked it, at least Dharma was cute, and I loved it when she was barefoot, and in at least one episode the writers made a point to acknowledge that she was barefoot. She was going to go shopping, and she said "I'll put my shoes on first", although I would have preferred it if she went shopping barefoot! ;)

I was insanely jealous of Greg.

The couple did a cute turn on 2.5 Men.

I liked the show very much. I liked the characters and the story and many things about it !!!

I'm guessing that the biggest or most fundamental problem w/ Dharma and Greg overall is that it suffered from the weird dramatic turn it took during the third or fourth season. It went from off-beat comedy about an odd couple to a show about a couple that can't stop arguing. Maybe this is unfair and a reach, but another reason why people really don't care much for Dharma and Greg (at least now a days) is once people discovered Jenna Elfman's ties w/ Scientology.

With its very good cast, it could be a gas, especially "Old Yeller".

I don't know if I would like it now because I don't like shows with hyper leading ladies anymore, but at the time I loved Dharma and Greg. It was fun, fresh, and had a terrific cast. I think the writers fell into the trap of trying to out hippie themselves though and the show wasn't as good after awhile.

Not a big fan of the change in Season 3 & 4. Taking Greg out of the US Attorney's office was a mistake, but I could deal with it. The Kevin Sorbo arc was yucky, but if they would have kept it to those first two episodes, it would have been doable. However, the characters seemed to be changed to mold the storyline, like Dharma keeping the note he sent her, even though it caused a major rift between her and Greg the first time. Don't think she would be so appreciative if it was Barbara sending him love notes.

If they wouldn't have done so much drama stuff in such sort of a time, I don't think it would have been so bad. However, they got desperate instead of using their brains and it showed in Season 5. While it had some great episodes, it also had some stinkers with guest stars that made no sense whatsoever.
