View Full Version : $57.32 a week after taxes in 1977 was Ann's salary
TVFactFan 04-25-2015, 01:26 AM That still seemed very low for a woman with two kids and no food stamps lol
Today that is $900.00 a month and would not be enough for a family of 3.
BTW: Her boss was a WEIRD:lol:
ThomasE 04-25-2015, 11:06 AM That had to be per day. I must have missed something. I know on "Alice", by 1979, Alice Hyatt was making 2.95 per hour which comes out to be under 30usd a day for 10 hours.
Wawwie 04-25-2015, 11:20 AM You are both wrong. The $57.32 was going to be her weekly RAISE, not her salary! LOL! Whatever her salary was originally was going up by $57.32.

Oh ok that makes sense because it didnt sound right for a family of 3. Lol

Yeah. That's what I thought, that she was going to make $57.32 more a week! So basically her raise was about 230$ more a month! That was good! ;) No wonder she was pissed when the A** of a boss decided to pass on Ann and give the job to that man!
That was really unethical. You can't promise someone a promotion with a raise than go back on your word and give the position to someone else!
pkripper001 04-25-2015, 03:27 PM Lets look at this way, what if she was bringing home $57.32,I am sure some did.
Minimum wage was $2.30 in 1977,so lets say she got 28 hours in at a minimum wage, that would be $64.40,and if they took out 8.4%,that would be $5.41,leaving $58.99. I know that is not the exact amount she brought home, but it is close. She gets child support. She gets a better job too.
By 1979, the minimum wage jumps up to $2.90

I only missed 2 episodes since the show been on so when the hell did she get that job in the first place?

$57.32 in 1977 is equivalent to $223 in 2015, not $900.

I think it was on the episode where Ed first appeared. They didn't show it but they mentioned it. Also they had an episode set there when David Dukes guest starred.

I was saying $900 a month after taxes in 2015

My post was out of confusion as I heard Ann discussing with the girls what she would be making but missed something in the convo. I was too lazy to rewind the scene back. So, I was confused and wasn't sure if making 57 a week was right which is why I brought up the income for Alice Hyatt to compare.
Wawwie 04-25-2015, 05:48 PM There is no way Ann could afford rent and childcare on a measly 57.00. The 57.00 was her raise. But she must have lived comfortably considering Ed paid for child support. I don't know if she was getting alimony.

Oh, sorry. I'm sick today so my brain is only half functioning.

I was thinking her rent was $25 a month

My point exactly. There is no way she could be living off of 57 usd a week. Alice, Flo and Vera were making waaay more than that being waitresses based on the salary Mel gave them. I am relieved that that info was not on the weekly basis regarding salary. :D

For a two bedroom apartment???   No way!
In the '70s, my mom, dad and brother lived in a two bedroom apartment in New York that was $300.00 per month. And it was not in a fancy neighborhood either.
pkripper001 04-26-2015, 06:27 PM Was the 2 bedroom apartment in New York City ? If so, NYC is higher then the rest of the state. The average monthly rent in 1977 was $240. In one episode, they were trying to get Ann kicked out so they could raise the rent,so this makes me think she had a lower rent price than most. The reference about Alice making more waaay more is not true, since Mel was only paying Alice 5 cents over minimum wage. Was Alice getting 10 hour a day? Was Alice getting to keep all of her tips or did she have to split her tips?

I said what I said because of Solomon's assumption of Ann making 57 a week after taxes. By 1979, alice was making 2.95 per hour for a 10 hour a day. This is mentioned in a season four episode before he flips out. If Ann actually did make 57 a week, then Alice would have made quite a bit more. Even during this season two of "One Day" was season one of "Alice" where she was making 2.65 an hour, it still would have been a lot more than a 57 dollar a week salary. Thankfully, Ann was NOT making that measly amount but it was a raise amount. She was an exec so she should have been banking those dollars. Did Alice share tips? That, I do not know.

Why couldn't they raise the rent before kicking Ann out?

Our two bedroom apartment was right outside of Queens, New York City. We lived in Valley Stream, New York from the early 70s until 1980. The rent there was $300.00 back then but eventually climbed up by 1980.
