I noticed that the opening credits change from Ann and the girls moving in to their new apartment to something different during season 2.

Was it the addition of Ginny? I can see why they would change the credits right in the middle of the season for any other reason besides a cast member change.

Speaking of Ginny, I think she was one of the many unnecessary characters added throughout the show's run.

She added very little to the show besides the fact that she was all flirty with Schneider.

It was most likely due to Mary Louise Wilson joining the cast and Richard Masur exiting the series. After he did his six episodes for season two, the opening was revamped.

It would help to know the production dates, but often a series, after wrapping production on one season, will immediately shoot several episodes for the upcoming season before taking the summer hiatus, so they have a jump start on getting a few episodes in the can. That's probably what happened here: these episodes were probably shot in the early spring. Then they resumed production several months later for the rest of the season, with Mary Louise Wilson and without Richard Masur.

Those could be show killers. Replacing a somewhat main character so early in a show's run.

Actually the second season where David leaves is the highest rated season of all time in the history of the series coming in #8 for the 1976-1977 season.
