The most successful Marvel adaptation of the decade was The Incredible Hulk. Bill Bixby played scientist David (not Bruce) Banner who transforms into the green brute, The Hulk, when he is angry. Richard Kiel, Jaws from the James Bond movies, was originally cast as the Hulk. Although he was tall, he had a slight build. So Kiel was replaced with body builder Lou Ferrigno. Kiel had bad reactions to the green contact lenses and make-up, so he didn’t mind losing the job.
The show was inspired by Les Miserable. It shared a lot of DNA with The Fugitive as well. Bixby went from town to town helping people while evading a pursuer. In this case, an investigative reporter is constantly following him trying to expose the Hulk to the world.
A pilot movie and a sequel aired in 1977. The series then ran on CBS from 1978-82. In the 80’s, three more reunion movies aired.
