The Shield is kind of an odd duck since it definitely had some issues but those were a bit isolated. If anything maybe covering this will help me make up my mind on how to classify Sons of Anarchy since it and The Shield have a similar issue with where things kind of go wrong yet I wouldn't call the overall slope of quality a sliding scale towards rock bottom. This may seem like an intricate problem and it is, but considering what show we're talking about, well, it's kind of fitting.

The History:

Shawn Ryan ( Lie to Me, Terriers) started out as a man with great potential, having won the Norman Lear Playwright award. Ryan ended up writing for Nash Bridges, and then before creating The Shield he was working on Angel. The late Scott Brazil ( Hill Street Blues), who'd worked on Nash Bridges with Ryan, teamed up with him when the idea for The Shield was shopped around. FX, a network that had failed at the time failed to produce a real hit in terms of original programming, took a shot, deciding to keep with the idea of producing dramas for mature audiences. The Shield would end up being the first of several breakout hits for FX (another being Nip/Tuck, which we've already covered), going on to last a total of 7 seasons and 88 episodes. Nominated for six Emmy awards (winning a few) and winning a both a Peabody Award and an AFI Award for excellence, The Shield is no stranger to lists of the best TV shows to come out in the 2000s as well as greatest TV shows ever, full stop.
