I can't believe a woman just asked a complete stranger (Janet) to "watch her baby" while she went to see her husband at the hospital. It's one of those flat-out unbelievable things.

I could picture it happening back in the older days when people left their doors unlocked, but not in 1984.

I dunno if that would happen even in the old days...

I can see asking a neighbor you don't know too well to look after your young child, or maybe asking a friend of a friend if you were in dire straits, but I think an adult would have to have SOME connection to another adult before they just chuffed off their kid, especially an infant since they can't be left alone.

Yes, it's a stretch in any normal circumstance.

But you never know. I visited Chicago two years ago. We went to the Chicago Field Museum and there was a guy speaking French with three young kids who spoke French, so clearly he was visiting from a country in Europe. He left his young baby unattended in the stroller while he was in line getting food at the McDonald's in the museum.

Now granted he was a father and not a mother, but I do believe there are probably still people in parts of the world that are all too trusting that no one's going to harm their kids.

So I could picture people in the 1950s, at least before the 1960s came around, not locking their doors, and trusting total strangers with their children.

That is called poor parenting, no matter what decade it is or whether you're a mother or father, period.

I can see letting an older child play with his or her friends or something like that. Obviously a lot of kids have to fend for themselves, like walking to and from school alone, etc. But leaving a baby unattended in a public place? I think that's called neglect.

I used to work in a place where parents felt it was ok to leave their kids alone for hours without supervision. One time a 7-year-old girl brought her baby sister into the building with no adult. I called the police.

I agree with you. I felt compelled to watch and make sure the kid was okay while the father was away.

Sometimes things just don't seem right and you have to watch them to make sure everything's ok.
