"General Hospital" to Go Live in May
by Matt Webb Mitovich
April 2, 2015

For its next, 52nd anniversary-related trick, ABC’s "General Hospital" will present not one but two episodes live. The special broadcasts will air Friday, May 15, and Monday, May 18, just as the May sweeps rating period is drawing to a close.

They continue an anniversary celebration that thus far featured current cast recreating original scenes/characters from the sudser’s April 1, 1963 debut, and just this Wednesday revealed a darrrrrk secret from front man Luke Spencer’s past.

“Taking such an iconic show as General Hospital live for two days is both exhilarating and risky,” executive producer/head writer Frank Valentini said in a statement cited by People.com, the first to report the news.

“I am enormously proud of our cast, crew and staff for all their tireless dedication and hard work that will be leading up to this daytime television event. It’s live television and absolutely anything can happen, but that is what’s fun about this and we’re absolutely up to the challenge.”

Great Idea, but they should get the show at the same time like all network programming, since only the major markets like NYC, etc get the show at 3PM eastern and the rest at 2PM eastern......obviously it won't air live at all in the west........on April 1, 2015 the last 2 min was taken off for a news event in NYC (3PM) and on April 2 (2PM) in Georgia (WWSB) yes real call letters...lol...most of the entire episode was not shown due to the president speaking, yet in NYC the episode aired.

Terrible for such crucial episode to be treated in such a manner!

Lastly with total respect to you, but your thread title, GH is not filmed, but even if it was it's impossible to "film a live episode", they can go "live" and record it digitally for preservation. GH is videotaped and edited together 6 weeks before airing and some scenes are shot months in advance and held or never used.

In the golden age of TV when everything was mostly live and there was no way of preserving it, they would film the live TV screen and hence the kinescope was born with strobbing lines and all! Untill thanks to Desi Arnaz for creating the multi camera film sitcom for "I Love Lucy".
