View Full Version : Brussel sprouts served in a restaurant
Bonniegirl 03-30-2015, 06:44 PM On the ep where Beaver wouldn't eat his Brussel sprouts and at first if he didn't eat them he couldn't go to the ball game. Than the parents changed their minds and said he could go under the condition the next time Brussel sprouts were served he would have to eat them! So being it's TV of course the next time is them being served at the restaurant they went to before the game!!! :(
But the point of this thread is , did any of you find it strange that Brussel sprouts would even be served at a restaurant? Because a lot of people don't like them! Usually restaurants serve popular vegetables. And than when Beaver made a fuss about it, the waitress said he could have peas or carrots instead. Now why wouldn't the restaurant ask the customers when they were ordering if they wanted peas, carrots or Brussel sprouts for their vegetable if they had all three?

If they offered the three types of veggies, Beaver would have selected either peas or carrots and hence the ending of the show would not
amount for much.

LOL!!! I know it wouldn't have made the show what it was had there been a choice of vegetables. ;) I was remarking how TV is funny that way, how coincidences happen, like the chances that Brussel sprouts would be served at the restaurant that night. I meant in real life especially back than, even these days you don't really see Brussel sprouts as a vegetable served in a restaurant. And if there were other vegetables they really would give the diners a choice. ;)
Bonniegirl 03-31-2015, 11:54 AM Despite the plot of that episode, you really didn't see Brussels sprouts every day back then. A nice restaurant like the one they were in might use it as the main vegetable for a day if they happened to pounce on some at the produce yard that morning - most people would see it as a neat little change.
That's true. But IDK how many people would think it was a neat little change and how many people would just leave them sitting on their plates! There are a lot of people that think Brussel sprouts are :p I personally love them,;) but I only know two other people in my whole life who like them! More people I know dislike them! :p
Torgo 03-31-2015, 12:06 PM June wanted Beaver to eat those Brussels sprouts or else, but Ward thought she was overreacting. Yet in a previous episode to that one, it's mentioned that Ward wanted Beaver to eat eggplant, but June, I think, made it so Beaver didn't have to. Just thought that was funny.
Yes, sitcoms do have to arrange things for comic effect, even though they don't ring true, at least ordinarily not. Other examples in LITB include: Eddie parking the Rutherfords' car in a space where it's plainly marked an unauthorized car will be towed at owner's expense; Beaver's many gullible actions, like flying the kite he and Ward built and the wind suddenly dies and it crashes, Beaver and Larry playing hooky and going to the grocery store for free samples and ending up interviewed on television on the channel Wally, sent home from school, and June happen to be watching  .....
Nevertheless, I like Brussels sprouts, knowing well that most people either don't or are indifferent to them. I don't know if I can remember seeing them on the menu in a restaurant, but I have seen them in cafeterias.
JudgeGarth 03-31-2015, 09:37 PM I DON'T like Brussels sprouts and I've done that trick Beaver did (putting food you don't like in your shirt pocket) even before I saw it on "Beaver." Lol.

Yeah, I noticed that too..........LOL
As I always interpreted that episode, it wasn't a coincidence.
I always assumed Ward set it up somehow in advance so they'd get Brussels sprouts. I assumed it from the looks on the character's faces (especially Ward) when the family saw the sprouts.
Scrabjan1 04-04-2015, 02:14 PM I thought the expressions on Ward and June's faces were so strange when the dinners arrived...Ward is like smiling all over and not even looking at his food, same with June. I always look at my dinner when it's served.
By the way in The Shave Wally is sitting at the table very mad at Ward for embarrassing him in front of Eddie. Then Eddie goes and tells the guys how Ward got mad at Wally for taking his last blade. Anyway Wally doesn't want to eat the food and asks what's this stuff. June says it's eggplant and Wally says he's not supposed to eat fried food. Ward tells him to eat it anyway...but in a previous episode, Beaver's Short Pants, Ward tells June on the phone that Aunt Martha is serving eggplant and everything and June says "Oh...eggplant?" so why did she serve it to them?

Yeah, and in "The Shave"
Ward got all mad cause Wally used the last blade, Like it would have been ruined shaving Wally's "Baby Face" one time..................LOL
Scrabjan1 12-13-2020, 10:34 AM Good point. You would think Wally had a heavy beard and made it dull. Ward says “Oh great now I have to go without shaving.” You would think he had a beard like Charlie Manson. He didn’t have to shave. It cracked me up.
stevea 12-13-2020, 01:16 PM Ward really blew it on that one. Never embarrass your kids in front of their friends.
But back to the sprouts, I'd think a fancy restaurant wouldn't normally serve them. Now if they had gone to a cafeteria...

I think that Brussel Sprouts have become a "fad" food of sorts these past few years, with some niche restaurants trying to prove that they can make them taste good, despite their reputation.
We have a restaurant locally that breads and frys them, then just before serving they crush them on a hot grill, to blacken the edges....I actually enjoy them this way
Also used to get them at a restaurant in Atlanta called the "Coach and Six" where they had this buttery cheese-like sauce (similar to what is common for cauliflower), and then Parmesan cheese sprinkled on top, that wasn't too bad, either.
Tankeryanker 12-13-2020, 04:41 PM ^^^
I thought you said breeds and fries them. I thought "what a strange thing to do to Brussel sprouts".

Yeah, exactly ! When I made this thread in 2015 they weren't as popular/trendy yet ! Like you said not just plain Brussel sprouts, but prepared in fancy ways seem to be the trend in the last couple of years !;) But in the 1950's -early 60's Brussel sprouts were certainly not popular and would be weird at a restaurant !
BTW - Really delicious Brussel sprouts (frozen) at Trader Joe's ! Even if someone doesn't like Brussel sprouts , they might like these ! So delicious, as I said they are frozen and small . Very tender when cooked and naturally sweet ! I think that's the thing about Brussel sprouts, the fresh ones DO take long to cook, if they are undercooked they are hard and a bit bitter ! :p
CosmicCharlie 12-13-2020, 09:52 PM June is a dink !
Dink is defined as a sports shot where the ball drops just over the net, or a slang term for a jerk, or an offensive term for a person born in Southeast Asia, or an abbreviation (DINK) that is defined as double income, no kids. ... Used as a disparaging term for a Vietnamese person, especially during the Vietnam War.
stevea 12-19-2020, 05:19 PM I had some sprouts from a local cafeteria the other night, MCL.
I'm with Wally, you can choke 'em down. But I don't like 'em very much.
Torgo 12-21-2020, 07:15 PM Didn't Wally in another episode say he hid his sprouts under his potatoes?

Pass me yours. I will smother them with mustard and enjoy them...slowly, bite by bite.

That sounds good!
OH Nuts! 12-21-2020, 08:32 PM I still can’t stand them cooked but raw and thinly sliced in a salad is tolerable to me. Odd as I really like cauliflower cooked and raw. Wished I did like Brussels Sprouts though as they’re really good for you.
stevea 12-21-2020, 08:36 PM They're probably more nutritious raw.
I'm the same way about carrots. They're awful cooked, but the baby carrots are great raw, dipped in ranch dressing.

You know me too. If I cook them, it’s only a little to put into chicken soup. But I love them raw and like to dip them in guacamole.

Carrots gave me nightmares until it was suggested to stick them raw, into the Cuisinart, shred them and put them on my oatmeal, and cook them in the microwave.
I am shredding a bunch tomorrow and then freezing them to heap on my oatmeal. Some people are using summer squash instead of carrots.
Tankeryanker 12-21-2020, 09:26 PM That sounds good!
Honey mustard. Yum, I am going to have to get more at the store.

I like them raw shredded to but love carrot sticks and baby carrots.
Bonniegirl 12-21-2020, 11:41 PM You guys would like Trader Joe's frozen Brussel sprouts ! ;)I just had some for dinner !:)

Yuck. Not me. But they do have a cruciferous raw salad with shaved Brussels sprouts. Those I can eat. But cooked - NEVER!
Scrabjan1 12-22-2020, 10:42 AM Since we’re discussing vegetables who can tell me what vegetable is ‘never’ mentioned on LITB.
a. Peas
b. Broccoli
c. Carrots
d. Brussels sprouts
e. Olives (are they a veggie)
f. Potato
g. Beets
h. Celery
i. Eggplant
j. Corn
k. Lettuce

(Olives are technically fruits, but everyone I know considers them a veggie, same with tomatoes)
I know it’s definitely not a or c, because they were offered to Beaver in the restaurant. Not g, because I think they’re mentioned in an Aunt Martha ep.
And I remember June preparing potatoes so not f. And obviously not d.
I’ll take a stab at it and guess eggplant.
Tankeryanker 12-22-2020, 01:21 PM I think it might be h. I thought Aunt Martha/Margaret made the eggplant dish.
Bonniegirl 12-22-2020, 02:30 PM My guess peas or broccoli ?
stevea 12-22-2020, 02:33 PM I know it's not peas. They were definitely mentioned in Beaver Takes a Bath. I think Beaver said he only liked the insides of them. (Wally should have said, that's stupid, Beaver--there's no difference between the inside or the outside.)
I was going to guess broccoli though.
Scrabjan1 12-22-2020, 04:35 PM The answer hasn’t come up yet. Thank you all for playing.
You’re right about peas they eat them in Beaver Takes a Bath. I completely forgot corn. Ward says he never saw anyone put ketchup on corn before. Also when Ward is cooking dinner Wally asks him if he should put more water in the corn.
Larry asks if they’re having broccoli. Ward says “You’re not Larry.”
Aunt Martha makes eggplant and in The Shave June fries eggplant.
Larry doesn’t like how Beaver’s mother cooks carrots and Lumpy hides them in his potatoes.
We all know about Brussels sprouts.
In one episode June wants to know about crackling on the line. Julia Foster is eating celery.
In Teacher Comes to Dinner June asks Ward to open olives. Ward offers one to June as they have a calming effect. Also I believe there are olives on the table at the restaurant when they serve sprouts.
Answer is g. Beets. If someone can say beets was mentioned I’ll eat a sprout. I added two more vegetables to the list.

I thought I heard Aunt Martha say something about a beet loaf, but maybe I misheard. I think it was the ep here she got poor Beaver that ridiculous outfit.
And I forgot all about the celery - yes, I remember that vividly now.
Bonniegirl 12-22-2020, 04:49 PM Yeah, I should have known it wasn't peas, but was going on what would be the most unlikely answer would he the right answer ?;)

I think we even see Ward and maybe even Wally eat celery, when June is cooking in the kitchen and either of them picks up something to eat.
Also, in one of the episodes it's mentioned that Ward made one of the kids eat eggplant.
stevea 12-22-2020, 07:48 PM If bunnies like celery Beaver probably had some before the play lol. If not maybe a carrot.
stevea 12-22-2020, 07:51 PM Also when Ward is cooking dinner Wally asks him if he should put more water in the corn.
Wally should have asked, you want me to put some more water in the pan making the fake boiling sound?
Scrabjan1 12-24-2020, 04:36 PM That's right that pan with steam coming out of it and crackling. Steam like in the cup of soup on the billboard. Ward can't hold the handle of the pan so uses his tie but then he is able to hold the handle. Reminds me of a scene in My Three Sons when someone is putting a hot casserole or dish from the oven onto the table with mitts then Katie or someone is serving it and holds the side of the dish with her bare hand.
I forgot to mention lettuce. In Beaver Won't Eat Ward tries to get Beaver to try a sprout thinking they are little heads of lettuce. His response is he doesn't like lettuce either. I wonder if squash or spinach is mentioned. I didn't put them on the list because I didn't know. Eddie does mention squab but not squash.
stevea 12-24-2020, 05:14 PM I don't remember hearing about squash or spinach, but I'm not really attuned to veggies. I do remember Eddie politely (of course) rejecting June's invitation to dinner, due to the Haskells having squab that evening.
However Clarence did like the pot roast, and we know he liked the mashed potatoes, since he would have finished them off (emptied the serving bowl) if Beaver hadn't stopped him by saying he'd like some too, if there's any left. In that episode also liked how Lumpy shoved Beaver going in the house and Beaver shoved him back.
CosmicCharlie 12-27-2020, 04:23 PM update
