I have watched about six episodes of the first season of AfterMash on Youtube recently.
Frankly, I did not think it was such a horrible show. I like Harry Morgan, William Christopher and loved Jamie Farr. Colonel Potter's father like wisdom was warm and comforting, we get to meet Mildred, and I think that actress was well chosen and did her role well (the lady on Potter's desk in MASH was Harry Morgan's wife).
I liked Dr. Pfeiffer as the young intern under Potter's wing. The Mike DeAngelo character, who was the boss of the hospital was played too much of a buffoon for me, and the lady who was Klinger's superior was a bit like a female Frank Burns. But even they were tolerable. Bob, the old codger who was in Potter's cavalry unit, was an entertaining character.
One of the better episodes was when a veteran came in, and it was found he had a fatal disease, which was contracted by watching an atomic bomb test, like many other soldiers/marines etc. The government and the hospital were slow and refused to accept responsibility for what happened.
Another funny one I liked was when they treated someone comotose who somehow claimed he was a veteran, and was cured of his ailment, but it turned out that he was a soldier of the German Army in WWII who was captured and was sent to the USA as a POW (which happened) and was let loose here after the war. The buffoonish DeAngelo wanted a picture in the paper and asked the guy was he in any battles, with the German saying "yes, Normandy, Battle of the Bulge, etc."
Was the show funny and comical? No it wasn't. It sort of to me had a relaxing Mayberry RFD feel to it, with warm, familiar characters, and possibly like in MASH, teach a moral lesson. I do know the show went to crap....one episode I did not see was with Colonel Flagg. Flagg was OK in MASH...but here? Liked the Gary Burghoff episode, but I think Radar deserved a better post script for his life.
Jamie Farr just cracks me up. Doesnt have to do anything but show up. Rosalind Chao was also nice to look at, so there was that.
I probably opine that the show was easy going and Ok, and then it got ruined over time for whatever reason. If nothing else, see how old Harry Morgan is in this show and it will amaze you he lived another 30 years! Pretty amazing.
