That was one of todays eps. I tuned in about 10 minutes into the program. Was it ever explained why Lumpy wasn't going to the picnic? There were already 7 people, not enough seats in the car, and Violet having to sit on Beavers lap. Strange that if Wally was going, why wasn't Lumpy? They would have to take two cars ! I know that they would have had to cut the scene with Violet on Beaver's lap, (that was funny and set the theme of the show) but they could still have the kiss and the picture. But was it ever explained why Lumpy didn't go?

I think June only had enough Lunch meat to make 6 sandwiches..... (Violet and the Beav. would share one) and they were afraid that Lumpy would eat everyone elses sandwiches...... so, he stayed home to study for his Black History Exam on that following Monday......

Nope. It was never explained. I thought it was odd that Lumpy didn't go since Wally did.

Yeah I know! Of course it would have thrown the ep off a little . The scene where Fred ordered Violet to sit on Beaver's lap was funny!! It set the mood for the rest of the show. And than driving by Richard and Gilbert on the way to the picnic!! Poor Beaver!:(

In real life in the car would be Fred driving, Beaver in the middle up front, Than Mrs. Rutherford up front with Violet on her lap. And Ward, June and Wally in the back! I mean if my Dad tried to pull that and have me sit on a little boy classmates lap, I'd say I don't want to! And my mom would protest too, if I was uncomfortable with it! Not to mention Ward should have said something too , like why can't she sit on Gwen's lap?

I don't know, I think in real life Fred still would have done that haha But yeah, Mrs Rutherford could have offered when Beaver quite clearly looked uncomfortable when Fred said for Violet to sit on his lap.

Oh, and it was Richard and Whitey:) . I loved how Richard kept thanking Whitey for hanging out with him, and Whitey tells him to shut up.

Watching it again though, when Ward comes up to Beaver and Wally's room to tell them about the picnic, and Ward tells Beaver that Violet would be there. You would have thought Wally would have asked about Lumpy. Fred made sure that Ward invited both Wally and Beaver, yet no Lumpy.

Not for nothing, but isnt kind of odd to have Violet sit on Beaver's lap. I mean dont you think thats a bit inappropriate considering how young they are?

Not to give you a terse answer, but they didn't need him. This was an episode about Beaver and Violet. If an actor isn't needed to tell the story, they save money by not paying for him. They drop actors from a series and don't explain their absence either. (this was shared by a user on another website) Good answer I thought.

They could have said Lumpy is studying for a make up test on World Ward 1 or working on an art exhibit.

It was strange because Lumpy ( Clarence) was more popular a character than Violet. Violet was only in a few eps. It was weird to have no mention at all of him in the picnic ep. Poor thing, it wouldn't have been fair for him to be home studying while others were having fun a picnic, they could have said he was sick? But I think the best would have been to have him out of town for the weekend visiting a relative .

I realize he wasn't needed for this ep, but he was the Rutherford's child so there should have been a mention as to why he wasn't going to the picnic. IMO!

I'm a huge fan of Veronica Cartwright (Violet), so this is always a must-watch ep for me.

It would be a few years before she became a cast member of the first 2 seasons of Daniel Boone. We finally get to see her in color in the 2nd season of that series.

She was in the movie The Birds too! ;)

Yeah, and look at the esp. where Wally has the "Jelly Roll" hair style.
Eddie was supposed to have started the style, but he wasn't in that show at all.

I think Fred was a pervert! I think he pushed those kids too much with having Violet sit on Beaver's lap and then the photo - "get in closer" he ordered. And then making them put their arms around each other, and then having her kiss the Beaver and having it printed. Scenes with Fred were funny in most of the episodes, but came off as creepy in ths one.

I agree. I thought Fred was really out of touch with kids and must know an 11 year old boy would not want to snuggle up with a girl. I think his wife should have said something instead of "something they ate." If someone had stepped in there would have been no episode. Ward did the same thing with Wally's Dream Girl, Ginny Townsend, by saying all that embarrassing stuff. At least he didn't push them together for a kiss.

As for Eddie not in the Jellyroll, there was no way his hair could have been combed into the Jellyroll. He had very short hair and Wally had lots of hair.

Interesting because Lumpy and Violet were never in an episode together, nor did one another ever mention each other.

Yes they were in one episode together and just one scene in Beaver's Rat. When Beaver sells Violet Peter Gunn for $3.00.

But were they in the same scene with each other? I don't know for a fact, but I never recall seeing Lumpy and Violet together in a scene!!!

I don't think Fred was a pervert, definitely not on a 1960's TV show. I think Fred was just so in his own world he didn't think anything odd of it. I agree Fred's wife, or Ward or June should have spoke up when they saw how uncomfortable Beaver was.

Here's the scene in Beaver's Rat. (Memory only) Violet is sitting on the sofa at the Rutherford house and showing Fred her rat in the shoebox. She talks about how much she likes Peter Gunn. Lumpy is milling around the sofa eating an apple with nothing to do. Fred finds out that Violet bought him from Beaver for $3 and Fred is appalled. He says he'll call Ward and make him take back the rat as that was too much money to pay. Violet says not to embarrass her when he calls and Fred asks when has your father ever embarrassed you? "Lots of times." Then Violet says she's going to have mom get Peter Gunn something to eat. Fred tells Lumpy to do some homework.

Yeah, I seem to recall that is about it.
Without watching the episode, I seem to recall Lumpy saying something like, "Its because she is a dumb little kid"
I could have it mixed up though.

Didnt Lumpy call his father "daddy" in that scene as well? I mean when didnt he say that? Btw, what season was Beaver's Rat in? I do remember when Beaver stood up to Violet when she was bullying him but that was in the first season, I think.

That's right Fred tells him first to do his homework and Lumpy says he doesn't have any. He does say if there's anything I can't stand it's a dumb little kid. Fred tells him to go watch TV or read a comic book. He comes back saying "there's nothing on TV and I can't find my comic books. Fred tells him to go read a book. Lumpy says he doesn't have to get mad at him just because Violet got gypped.
