If you watch Season 4 DVD, they have an interview with Beverly Archer where she plainly states the show was set in the state of Missouri.

Because of that, she said in the interview that she had to figure out what kind of accent to use.

Missouri is a vaugely Southern/Midwestern state with over lap of both cultures , so I felt what they did on Mama's Family was fairly accurate. I did feel initially, however, that the show was set in Oklahoma, which would have fit also in many ways.

Missouri has a tri state area in fact- more than one. I would venture to guess that even though Raytown is in Kansas City, their idea of it was a little further South - maybe towards the Ozark region.

The Midwest-Southern setting is perfect for some of what is utilized or mentioned on the show including " The Sons of Lithuania Hall ", and their fondness of bowling. Neither of which are prevalent in the Deep South.

The mystery is finally solved!

I always suspected it was Raytown, Missouri.

Didn't Vicki confirm this is in her autobiography?

No, but she pretty much did in an online interview with Frank DeCaro that was around when the box set came out.
