Not a happy day at TV Land: It was just hit by an undisclosed number of layoffs largely in PR and marketing as part of parent Viacom’s broad effort to cut costs.

The entertainment giant “is making changes in three of our domestic network groups, creating two new organizations,” it said today in confirming the TV Land cuts. “Today’s changes are part of the process of realigning our resources to meet the new needs of these organizations.”

Viacom has consolidated its channels into two groups: Doug Herzog oversees the Viacom Music and Entertainment Group while Nickelodeon’s Cyma Zarghami is in charge of the Viacom Kids and Family Group — which includes TV Land. Last month the channel’s president, 27-year vet Larry Jones, left.

CEO Philippe Dauman told analysts in January to expect “substantial net cost savings throughout our organization” which has about 10,000 employees, adding that he would “pull all the levers.” The company’s stock price is down 19.8% over the last 12 months as it grappled with falling ratings. TV Land has been especially hard hit, with ratings off about 26% so far this season.

Some analysts wonder whether a major pay TV distributor might drop its channels including MTV, Nickelodeon, BET, and Comedy Central, although Dauman has assured the Street that Viacom has more growth opportunities than risks.

Still, it’s a volatile time for the company. Last week Paramount Film Group President Adam Goodman left. Also last month Van Toffler, President of MTV Networks Music & Logo Group at Viacom, departed after 28 years with the company.

This piece of sh*T channel deserves to fail for all the dumb sh*t they air and been airing since 2005. Since the emergence of Digital TV and netflix, no one needs to watch TV land anymore

It is sad what happened to TVLand. They are known mostly now for excessive commercials and chopped up episodes that you forget you are watching after 10 minutes of advertising. Once they went off the clock to add more commercials it was done.

Last time I watched they showed 3 episodes of a sitcom in a 2 hour slot and there were still cuts in the episodes on top of the extra 30 minutes.

They deserve to be closed down due to awful management and disregard for the viewers.

I would be glad to see it go out of business. It is a horrible channel.

I wonder if Nick at Nite is also suffering the same thing as TVLand does.

Nothing against Farrah (Chasing Farrah) but TVLand sucked since 2004/5. I hope everyone gets laid off, really how many people do they need to keep showing the same junk over and over again??????

I agree with everyone's sentiments. They really shot themselves in the foot by jumping on the Reality TV bandwagon and excessively editing their Classic shows. Started off great in the mid-90s then became a cesspool all in the name of corporate greed. Good riddance!

I hope Viacom fails...they got greedy by NOT showing their shows on YouTube.

It looks like just keep new **** doesn't work as much as having it all be old shows...we need the balance!

That's when it started going downhill. Copyright arguing aside, I think it benefits a media group when their shows are aired online. It can lead to more sales if people watching decide to buy DVDs, if they're available. These days, companies need to explore all their options and embrace the digital age.

Honestly, TVLand could maybe work with reality shows and original comedy but here's the catch. They CAN NOT edit the hell out of there classic shows. I think if they stopped doing that AND stopped with so many commercials, then I think half the battle is done. In fact, even if you wanted reality shows and/or original comedy at night, I'd fill my whole day with these shows:

Andy Griffith
Happy Days
Leave it to Beaver
The Facts of Life
Father Knows Best
I Love Lucy
The Wonder Years
Laverne and Shirley

Now tell me if that lineup was in the daytime or hell even the night time that wouldnt draw?

Yes...even YouTube now has a buy option for shows and movies.

One day...DVDs may go away for buying shows and saving them on the computer...heck, it's starting now.
