JamesG 03-05-2015, 07:11 PM Samantha Bee Exits "The Daily Show" to Headline her Own TBS Series

Looks like Comedy Central is down one more potential "Daily Show" anchor. Samantha Bee, a correspondent for the cabler’s late-night news satire show, will host her own series on TBS, the network announced Thursday.
Bee’s new venture, which is still in the early stages, “is being planned as a platform for Bee to apply her smart and satirical point of view to current and relevant issues,” a release from TBS stated.
Bee and husband/Daily Show colleague Jason Jones, whose scripted comedy got the go-ahead at TBS last month, will executive-produce Bee’s venture with TBS.
Jones will star in the scripted comedy, the cast of which also includes Natalie Zea (Justified); the couple also will executive-produce that series.

Samantha Bee's exit is further proof that The Daily Show will look totally different after Jon Stewart leaves.

"Bee has always had a special knack for navigating even the silliest of "Daily Show candid interviews without risk of blowing her own cover," says Michael Arbeiter. "Compared to almost everyone else in the show's history, Bee has been the best instituting a feigned camaraderie with her subjects, provoking in them a heightened willingness to spout ideological tirades that will stir amused reactions in any viewer at home."

“We want to find comedy in the absurd injustice,” Bee says of her late-night show that will feature many field pieces, including one piece on the rise of Islamophobia and another filmed in Jordan. PLUS: Bee is “not going to be a lady behind a desk.” (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/samantha-bee-wont-be-a-852961)
IllinoisTVFan 01-08-2016, 08:04 PM I'll probably watch. I liked her on the Daily Show.

“I think you’re a fool if you don’t watch,” the former Daily Show correspondent of her new primetime/late-night show (http://forums.previously.tv/topic/38383-all-episode-talk-full-frontal-with-samantha-bee/#entry1941338). She says of her gender, however, "We did try to face it head on. You can’t avoid it. I think it’s a valid point to make. I don’t at all shy away from the question of being a woman in this space. It’s kind of out there. I did think we needed to address it in our tagline and we really did.” PLUS: Bee jokes, “there’s so much pressure as a Canadian (http://www.ew.com/article/2016/02/05/samantha-bee-full-frontal) to forge new ground, and Bee couldn’t imagine hosting The Daily Show 4 days a week. The first episode was “such a welcome jolt of energy” that you might wish Full Frontal was airing every day, says David Sims. “Full Frontal’s format is less cozy than many a talk show—Bee stands for the entire ride—and it makes her Daily Show-style segments feel all the more blistering,” he adds. PLUS: Bee’s “late-night” show actually airs in primetime (http://variety.com/2016/tv/reviews/full-frontal-with-samantha-bee-review-tbs-1201699977/), Bee left viewers wanting more (http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/tv/showtracker/la-et-st-full-frontal-review-20160208-story.html), the best part of Full Frontal is that it’s truly her own show (http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/02/09/samantha-bee-s-full-frontal-premiere-finally-a-late-night-show-with-lady-balls.html), Full Frontal feels fresh even though (http://www.avclub.com/review/full-frontal-samantha-bee-crashes-and-enlivens-lat-231943) it’s using clip packages the way other shows use them, it was one of the most confident premieres (http://www.ew.com/article/2016/02/08/full-frontal-samantha-bee-premiere-ew-review), Bee uses her gender (http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/television/2016/02/full_frontal_with_samantha_bee_reviewed.html) to great comedic effect, and Bee made the case that she could provide the distinct comedy voice (https://t.co/z1VMigD5VZ) for the 2016 election.

Sure, Bee has a week to work on her show, says Sara Stewart, "but her energy and feminist perspective make Full Frontal feel like something newer and better than the diminished Daily Show."

"I'm actually not,” she says. "The show channels my frustrations into a nice 21-minute catharsis, and then I'm pretty chill the rest of the time. I'm not sure I can really define our voice, but it comes from a very gut level, a very visceral place."
JamesG 04-04-2016, 11:53 AM "Full Frontal with Samantha Bee" Extended through 2016 at TBS

April 4, 2016
TBS has ordered an additional 26 episodes of Samantha Bee‘s late-night talk show, the network announced Monday. This gives the first season a total of 39 episodes, carrying it to the end of 2016.
In response to this huge news, Bee had this to say: “Stay crazy America, I’ll be here all year!”
Brett Weitz, executive vice president of original programming for TBS, was a bit more eloquent: “Sam has positioned herself as an essential voice in late night, and it’s pretty clear she’s struck a nerve and filled a void.”

Trevor Noah’s Daily Show is irrelevant, says Kristin Hunt, and Oliver’s Last Week Tonight, while great, is more like 60 Minutes or Frontline compared to Stewart's Daily Show. As Hunt notes, “what Stewart was aiming to do...was help you process and get over that dumb, viral soundbite some senator dropped on CNN the other day. Samantha Bee knows how to do that, too—better than anyone else on TV right now.”

“I know it wasn’t just for us,” she tells Katie Couric, "but it was really nice of everybody to be so crazy the year that we were launching our show. That was thoughtful.”

Bee has already used a writer on her show, Ashley Black, to discuss how white people have tarnished Black History Month. Bee also hopes to attend the political conventions this summer, but all the hotels are booked, so “we are going to be living in a Winnebago in a Walmart parking lot.” PLUS: Bee has proven late-night needed Full Frontal (http://www.vulture.com/2016/04/samantha-bee-has-proven-late-night-needed-full-frontal.html).
JamesG 11-16-2016, 02:10 PM "Full Frontal with Samantha Bee" Moving to Wednesday in 2017 Pickup By TBS
by Lisa de Moraes
November 16, 2016
Samantha Bee whose take-no-prisoners coverage of the election cycle on late-night’s "Full Frontal" has endeared her to TV critics and political pundits alike, officially got her expected pick-up for 2017 – and a new night.
TBS announced this morning that weekly "Full Frontal" is moving from Mondays at 10:30 PM ET to same timeslot on Wednesday nights, starting January 11. Insider says the Wednesday move works better from a production and content perspective, but that was made pretty clear during Election Week’s Wednesday night episode.
“I am only sorry that this renewal leaves me unavailable for a cabinet position in the new administration,” Bee said in today’s announcement. “I will, however, be available to host the White House Correspondents Dinner, seeing as I already bought the dress.”
"Full Frontal with Samantha Bee", which has been storming late night since its launch last February 8, is the fastest growing show in the daypart; this quarter’s delivery of adults 18-49 is outpacing Q3 by 37%. The weekly show reaches an average of 3.3 million viewers per episode across multiple platforms, which, TBS boasted, puts it among late-night Top 3 programs in the key adults 18-49 demo, quarter-to-date.
Throughout its first season, "Full Frontal" has covered the Presidential election extensively, including a sit-down interview with President Obama, as well as interviews with several female leaders from around the world, by way of demonstrating how behind the trend is this country.
"Full Frontal" has not confined itself to White House-race madness, though many of the show’s “other” segments have shined a light on election-cycle hot-button issues. "Full Frontal" has, for instance, reported on untested rape kits in Georgia, abortion laws in Texas, and local state legislators across the country, as well as the mass shooting in Orlando.
Among the ways Bee’s program has distinguished itself from the growing mob of late-night shows – beside the female host thing – it has ambitiously traveled to Jordan, Germany and, most recently, Russia, to bring an international perspective to important domestic issues.
“In less than a year, Sam has become one of the most talked-about personalities in all of television…We’re so lucky to have Sam and her Emmy-nominated team, led by the brilliant Jo Miller, as part of the TBS family. Xoxoxoxo,” TBS SVP original programming Thom Hinkle raved in this morning’s announcement.

JamesG 01-11-2018, 06:19 PM Samantha Bee’s "Full Frontal" Gets 2 Season TBS Pick-Up
by Lisa de Moraes
January 11, 2018
Television’s pioneering female-hosted late-night program "Full Frontal with Samantha Bee" will be on TBS at least two more seasons, seeing it through the 2018 midterms and bring us into the 2020 election season.
The network made the announcement Thursday morning in advance of the network’s at-bat, though Bee was not in attendance.
In its announcement, TBS boasted "Full Frontal" as the fastest growing late-night show, and ad supported TV’s No. 1 late night show among young adults.
Bee, whose show was the only female led on late night at its launch, averages 4 million total viewers per episode across TBS’ linear, VOD and digital platforms, and more than 250 million YouTube views.

JamesG 11-14-2019, 03:46 AM TBS Renews "Full Frontal with Samantha Bee" for Fifth Season & Extends First-Look Deal
by Peter White
November 13, 2019
TBS has renewed "Full Frontal with Samantha Bee" for a fifth season and has extended its first-look deal with Bee’s production company Swimsuit Competition.
The WarnerMedia-owned network is bringing back the Emmy-winning late-night show through 2020, which will give Bee the opportunity to skewer candidates across election season.
The first four seasons have run between 30 and 40 episodes per year.
The extension of the first-look deal will see Bee and her production company look to develop more originals. Swimsuit Competition recently began production on the untitled Amy Hoggart project, starring "Full Frontal" correspondent Amy Hoggart, for TBS.
It will now search for more ideas from people “who are flying under the radar, or whose work has been underestimated.”
“I’m beyond grateful for the opportunity to continue doing this show for another season,” said Bee. “Excited to still be at it when Trump finally gives up the presidency at the end of his fifth term, January 2036. I heard he’ll be leaving to spend more time with his family. JK JK.”

“I’m beyond excited to be returning to TBS for a seventh season,” said Bee. “Now we have enough seasons for you to binge one every day of the week. I warned you I was tenacious.”
