.....and am wondering how did it last for 9 seasons?!

Normally I'm the type that starts watching a show after it's been on several years with dozens of episodes in the can so I'm watching a smattering of episodes of HIMYM and I just don't get it, it's rather crude but not in a 2 Broke Girls or Two And A Half Men kind of way with the Barney character being a douche sometimes with his quest to bang every woman he sees.

I've read many comparisons to Friends another show I disliked and couldn't get into it and probably still won't.

What's more irritating is the audience laughter which I just discovered is the use of a laugh track due to the many flashback and cut-away scenes that set up the punchlines with only a handful of episodes actually filmed in front of a live audience. The show was never among the Top-10 viewing programs what with so many competition I can see why I guess CBS had faith in it.

I never saw the series finale but from what I've been reading it's had some mixed reception maybe I'll form my opinion when I get around to it.

But the best reason to watch is for the incredibly hot Cobie Smulders but I'll continue catching reruns to see if it grows on me.

I can see how that (plus the people who like will they/won't they shows) can hold enough of an audience to stay on the schedule.
Personally I hate those type of shows because it's a nuisance to the audience who feel cheated when the outcome isn't what they were expecting especially if it's dragged throughout the entire series.

I believe that was the case with Friends and whomever the characters on that show were caught in a will they/won't they situation.

5. How I Met Your Mother

The Show: The epic story of how Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) met the mother of his two children, relayed in flashback form as a young man experiencing life in New York City with friends Marshall (Jason Segel), Lily (Alyson Hannigan), Barney (Neil Patrick Harris); and Robin (Cobie Smulders).

Why It’s Overrated: It’s hard to argue with the fact that this show started out with an utterly irresistible premise: that viewers were going to be taken through a winding, twisting mystery which slowly revealed itself was incredibly appealing, but really, the show increasingly became less and less about the mother until, in its final stages, it was forced to.

The characters started off charming but started to lose their shine in later seasons (especially in the case of Ted and Lily), while Barney’s hilarity was pretty much the sole reason to keep tuning in.

The final season is the train-wreck that seals the deal, set almost entirely in the few short days leading up to Barney and Robin’s wedding, only to throw in the twist that this wedding build-up was essentially pointless and the mother was dead the whole time. It cast an ultimate, dark pall over a once-great show, though there are still those tireless devotees who will relentlessly defend it.

Stop watching after season eight (if you last that long) and make up your own ending instead, for your own sanity.

On the boxed set they have an alternate ending for the finale. I don't think it was that bad of a show there are worse.

One thing I can't comprehend is why the hell would Robin marry Barney later in the series knowing full well what a horny STD riddled sleazebag he's been probably having screwed every woman in New York?

Currently the reruns are up to the later seasons but I managed to watch an earlier season episode and the tone of the show seemed different than what it later becomes.

There are people at my office really into this show. They turn over freakin' SportsCenter for this. There are times I laughed, but this definitely a show I can live without.

Actually the most unrealistic aspect is the many attractive women that frequent the bar they hang out in, McLaren's, not one single overweight fat chick hangs out there.
