To the best of my ability I will give as much information as I can, it is not much. This was a country family possibly in the 50's or 60's. This man took care of a little girl that a lady left with him for a period of time. She came and got the daughter and the man never saw her again. He came to look at her as one of his own. The ending is the most I remember. This man is very old and his family wanted to find her for him before he died. I remember him sitting in what looked like a rocking chair on the porch and when the girl was found his family told him this was her. She was grown and he did not recognize her. The first thing he said was "She's so pretty but very country like" He repeated it and Robert Stack said not to long after that he died as if he was waiting for her to come back home. I never saw it air again and wanted to know if anyone remembers this man saying that when they found the girl, and Robert Stack mentioned at the end this man died shortly after seeing the girl one more time. This case was solved!

Sorry to borrow your thread, but I had another 'what case is this' question and I dont want to start another thread.

This case was used in the opening theme for awhile. It's near the end of the opening, a guy in a leather biker jacket runs down an alley to a police car but immediately puts up his hands. For the life of me, I cannot remember what segment that one is.

I think you might be referring to the re-enactment for Louis Bourgeuois's capture. He was actually wearing a dark jean jacket (how 80's is that?!) but could look like a leather jacket. I don't have too many clips of the opening sequences but seem to remember this one was on there.

The segment was about him and Jean Marie Gagnon escaping from the back of a US Marshalls car during transport back to prison after testifying at a trial. It was included as part of the Alcatraz special episode on 2-8-89

That's from the opening of a 1989 episode. It's definitely a biker jacket.

To the best of my knowledge, the biker jacket clip has not aired as a part of any episode, ever. I remember a fascinating conversation I had with DarkDante some years back in which he suggested the clip may be an outtake from the Gus Hoffman episode.

He based this theory on the fact that the Gus Hoffman episode, as aired, really isn't much of a mystery in the sense that they were only looking for Hoffman's body. All of the bikers thought responsible for Hoffman's death were in custody awaiting trial.

However, Stack mentions that on Christmas Day 1988, while the segment was being filmed, the authorities apprehended the last suspect in Gus Hoffman's disappearance and presumed murder - a biker named John Stelle.

DarkDante posited that perhaps the original intent of the segment was to capture John Stelle who was a fugitive at the time of filming. However, Stelle's arrest negated that need. Yet, UM had already "gone the distance" so to speak in filming the segment, so they re-tooled it into what it is today and perhaps left some stuff on the cutting room floor, such as the scene in question. Inexplicably, the scene found it's way into the opening montage.

Additionally, I discovered that the scene in the montage first aired on the 4/5/89 episode, so it is at least that old. Moreover, if you watch that the re-enactment of Gus Hoffman's confrontation with the bikers (at their house) there is a guy in the group who resembles the guy in the montage.

Interesting theory, and I think you're probably right. When I was going through my tape/segment collection a few months ago, I made a point to look for that segment because that biker jacket guy sequence was used for awhile after even this 1989 episode. So that would make it an early episode, but no dice.

Gus Hoffman. :( Seemed like a nice kid.
