Here it's hair weaves and laundry detergent, especially laundry detergent.
They go into these Dollar stores, fill up a shopping cart with jugs of the stuff and race out knocking down anyone that gets in their way. Police said they are using them for street currency, trading them for drugs or money.

we are having a "heroin epidemic" in our area so they are definitely doing the laundry detergent and hair dye thefts, along with cigarettes and a bunch of other stuff. Apparently they get entire lists of stuff to steal (with brand names needed and everything) to turn in for heroin.
two weeks ago they had a record high of 38 heroin overdoses in one weekend.
we also get some really weird robberies too - last week a 23 year-old woman ran into a Subway and robbed it with a hammer.
a whole lot of metal-scrapping thefts too - catalytic converters from cars, AC units, wiring and pipes from buildings - some businesses come in on a Monday morning to find the place flooded because thieves actually cut pipes with running water and just left it running.
Copper wiring from new home construction sites, catalytic converters, anything they can find in an unlocked car.

Holy cow! Where do you guys live? I'm in L.A. (biggest city besides NY) and I don't know of this stuff going on? Maybe I am naïve?

We've had immigrants stealing road signs and copper wiring from telephone lines, both to sell to scrap metal dealers. In fact people will steal anything which is not fixed down, now I come to think of it.

Metal thieves crawled out of the woodwork ever since scrap metal sky rocketed. I remember when I was at the scrap metal yard cashing in some cans I saw an old truck loaded with brand new spools of wire and stacks of shiny copper pipes. They had to have been stolen, I wonder what the value was on all that stuff if they bought it from a store ?

I agree with Bonnie, there has always been theft, but it's been in the last 5+ yrs or more about the smash and run and the copper wiring which has been all over the news here in West Los Angeles.....they have closed so many major stores down due to the smash and grab ......I see this was posted in 2015 so that is going on 9 yrs ago.
I know that the Media is full of lies but about this issue??????
