The TV Academy unveiled a host of changes (http://www.tvinsider.com/article/563/emmy-makes-groundbreaking-rule-changes-but-will-it-matter/) today from expanding the drama and comedy series categories to making all half-hour series a comedy, and all hour-long series a drama. As James Poniewozik puts it, "Many of the best TV shows right now—Transparent, Orange Is the New Black, Jane the Virgin, Better Call Saul—are neither wholly drama nor comedy. (Nor are they all necessarily what we call 'dramedies.') In fact, you could argue that exploring the boundaries between genres is precisely what defines the great TV of today. A more traditional drama like The Good Wife is nonetheless among the funniest shows on TV. Any given week, Girls or Louie can be one of TV's most affecting dramas." PLUS: Rule changes (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/bastard-machine/emmys-orange-is-new-black-775827) bring overdue common sense (http://variety.com/2015/tv/columns/emmy-rule-changes-bring-overdue-order-to-awards-1201437932/) to Emmys, and 7 winners and losers (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/emmys-new-rules-7-winners-775644) from rules changes.
