In real life, the arrival of a baby is cause for joy and celebration. On a TV series, however, a birth marks not the beginning… but the beginning of the end.

In many cases, the addition of a new baby to the cast has been the show's "jump the shark" moment — the turning point after which the series begins to experience a noticeable decline. It can't be a coincidence that a number of once-popular shows left the air just a season or two after a baby's arrival.

There are any number of reasons for this: The newcomer altered the initial premise of the show, upset the chemistry of the existing cast, introduced less interesting storylines, or was a plot contrivance too ridiculous for the audience to accept (or all of the above).

The Mindy Project faces this crucial moment in series history now that Mindy has learned she's pregnant with Danny's baby. They haven't been a couple for very long and have faced numerous hurdles, but what will introducing a baby do to them and the show?

Mork and Mindy should be the number one answer.

"The hard truth is that babies aren't funny," says Margaret Lyons, who worries that Danny and Mindy won't be able to hold a baby. PLUS: Mindy and Danny (https://tv.yahoo.com/blogs/tv-news/the-mindy-project-mindy-kaling-fox-154024885.html) have become one of the most likable couples on TV.

Let's find out what's going to happen next. The baby might be next season as proposed.

As TV pregnancy storylines are wont to do, The Mindy Project’s little bundle of unplanned joy came at a pretty lousy time: Mindy was making plans to establish a fertility clinic on the East Coast, baby daddy Danny was unaware of the pregnancy but had made it very clear that he would never leave New York, and the couple was bickering over whether it’s appropriate to bitch-slap a sullen teenager during a dinner party (the jury is still out on that one). Then Mindy told Danny about the baby, they kissed on a couch, Beyoncé’s “XO” started playing, and we knew that everything was going to work out.
