Spin-offs are tough to accomplish successfully. There are obvious examples like Frasier and The Simpsons that performed gloriously after their initial creation (Cheers and The Tracey Ullman Show, respectively) and then there are shows like Joey and After M.A.S.H. Beginning this Sunday at 9pm and then continuing on Mondays at 10pm, AMC is debuting Better Call Saul, the anticipated spin-off from Breaking Bad. Obviously Breaking Bad is one of television’s most popular and critical shows to ever grace the screen, so Better Call Saul‘s expectations are starting off extremely high for audiences. So high, in fact, that it’s not entirely fair that the show will always be in Breaking Bad‘s shadow, because apparently it’s going to be a completely different viewing. The same DNA is there — actors, producers, writers, and directors are returning — but the shadow will still cover most of its run or at least its first season. Given that Better Call Saul has already been renewed for a second season, Breaking Bad will again be in the television conversation until Better Call Saul either performs well on its own, or fails to separate itself from its birth.
