One of HBO’s first original series hits was Sex and the City. The 30 minute show cleverly disguised the stories friendships between a group of girls within the hot and lurid talk of sex. Now HBO has launched a similar project that this time features a group of gay men living in San Francisco called Looking. The show is just beginning its second season and with a few suggestions and changes, Looking could become the touchstone show for Gay men like Sex and the City was for the single girl.
Looking starring Jonathan Groff, Frankie J. Alvarez and Murray Bartlett airs on HBO Sundays at 10 pm ET
Focus more on the Chemistry of Patrick & Dom
Since Looking is still building the characters of the show, it is imperative that it really focus on the two main characters Patrick (Jonathan Groff) and Dom (Murray Bartlett). Focusing on this relationship and building outwards will give Looking a large fan base that it can build upon as the other characters are given more depth and clarification.
Keep show action in the San Francisco City limits
It’s been a long time since the city of San Francisco was featured as part of a story line on television. With San Francisco’s roots so importantly tied to gay civil rights, we want to see as much as the city as possible in the background. Otherwise, it would be like featuring a story about Parisian lovers without the backdrop of Paris.
Pick up the drowsy pace
San Francisco is one of the most exciting cities in the world and the pace of Looking should match the vibrant pace of the city that is home for its main characters. And when the moments are right to slow things down, like a love scene, it will be more noticeable and punctuate those special moments.
Allow the Characters to Change & Grow
To sustain a long running show it is in the course of character development to allow the main characters to change, grow and learn from the previous choices. And it is this character development that helps fans find connection to the show and develop their own vested interest in the show. As the characters change and grow the fan can chart their own changes in life – this is the mark of a great show.
Do Drugs & Sex Have to go Hand in Hand?
So far the sex in Looking is always accompanied by the use of drugs by the main character. But love affairs are always more meaningful if the characters choose to stay sober during their time together. If the sex always comes with drugs, then the atmosphere will always seem like a party and not a life.
