Warner Bros. is heading back to the future with a feature version of “The Jetsons (https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/rec.arts.tv/wFy78Hgqq7M),” hiring Matt Lieberman to write the script.

Hanna-Barbera original animated show aired in primetime on ABC in 1962 and 1963. It was set in 2062 and centered on George, Jane, Judy and Elroy Jetson along with Rosie the Robot. The series was a Space Age counterpart to Hanna-Barbera’s “The Flintstones.”

Warner Bros., which owns the Hanna-Barbera library, had been developing a live-action version of “The Jetsons” as recently as 2012 with Donald De Line and Denise Di Novi producing.

In 1990 Universal released a “Jetsons” movie directed by Joseph Barbera, co-founder of the Hanna-Barbera company and one of the creators of the original series.

Variety reported in 2013 that Lieberman (http://variety.com/2013/film/news/warner-bros-developing-animated-scooby-doo-film-exclusive-1200589474/) had come on board to write Warner Bros.’ Scooby-Doo animated movie project.

Lieberman has written “12/24″ for Chris Columbus’ 1492; “Giant Monsters Attack Japan” for Paramount Animation; and “The Pet” for Disney, with Jared Hess to direct. He’s repped by WME, Madhouse Entertainment and attorney Melissa Rogal.

News of “The Jetsons” movie was first reported by Deadline.com.

I am a fan of the Jetsons. But what made me a fan of the show was the all-star voice cast (Mel Blanc, Daws Butler, Don Messick, Jean Vander Pyl, George O'Hanlon, Penny Singleton, Janet Waldo, Howie Morris) Sadly almost all of them have passed on. I'm not sure I would be up for a movie with a replacement voice cast!

I remember hearing talks of another movie for The Jetsons a while back- so it's animated instead of live action now? Too bad- I was looking forward to seeing a live action version. Either way, I'll be interested- I love The Jetsons. I just hope it's a good, clean, fun and funny movie.:)

I will take a new animated version over a live action version. Look what happened to the Flintstones. Yuck!!

I hope they get Janet Waldo as Judy..esp.as she did little voice work at Warner Bros.outside Pinky and the Brain. They tried to get away with featuring her in their cartoons at all, apparently, even in 1990s.

Why did the 1990 Jetsons movie flop big time at the box office (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jetsons:_The_Movie#Box_office)? Was it bad word of mouth over replacing Janet Waldo as the voice of Judy Jetson w/ then pop starlet Tiffany? Was it bad timing in that the movie was released three years after the TV series (technically, the syndicated '80s revival, which also functioned as Seasons 2 and 3) stopped production, thus there was little interest in it?

If a new animated Jetsons movie is going to be produced, then I can almost guarantee you that not going to be in 2D like in the 1990 one (some some 3D CGI sprinkled here and there).

Unfortunately, Janet Waldo, the very last of the entire (main AND support and recurrant cast), has passed at 96.See my eulogy.

I could do without Mr. Spacely. He was a monster in the 1990 movie and it's time for George to have a new boss or make George the new president of Spacelys' Spockets.
