View Full Version : Virginia Employment Office Said I Owe Them $505
isiahthomas 01-22-2015, 04:08 PM I got a letter from the Virginia employment office yesterday saying I owe them $505 dollars because they sent me the money to my checking account and I shouldn't have spent it because that was the week that I didn't give them 2 jobs. That's their fault that they sent me the money because their not supposed to be sending me money when I haven't given them 2 jobs. When they sent the money to my checking account, they should've told the bank to tell me not to spend the money because they made a mistake. If they would've did that, I wouldn't have spent the money. I thought that money was from my part time job that I had at the time. Well the letter also said that if they don't get the money from me in about 7 years that if I try to get unemployment money in the future that the money I owe will be deducted outta my unemployment money. That's fine with me. If I get a full time job this year, i'll start making payments to pay the money back. I don't know when I'm gonna get a full time job. The employment office can't be making mistakes like this ever again because what they did was stupid and they're gonna have me be at fault.

I.T. I'm so sorry!! OMG !! I think this is total BULLSH*T!!! You have enough problems being unemployed and than for them to make a mistake and you have to take the fall for it!!! It's not fair at all! Somehow , somewhere there needs to be some way for you to appeal this! It's not right at all! It was there mistake! And everyone in your situation would have thought and done the same thing, if that money was deposited in your bank account, you would have thought it was yours!!!
Again I am so sorry, and hoping there is a way you can appeal this, you have enough to worry about and when a mistake like this happens and they blame you too! Like I said it's B*ll sh*t!

I know that this is total wrong and that it stinks!!
You might want to read this (even though it is NOT good news)
http://www.vec.virginia.gov/unemployed/Claimant-Handbook/Claimant-Handbook/Appeal-Rights
Once inside look on the right-hand side and click on "Overpayment of Benefits (10th one down)" (Gee, I wonder why they have this in the handbook, could it be that they normally overpay people?) STUPID GOVERNMENT:mad:
Like I said this STINKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
isiahthomas 01-23-2015, 02:05 PM Yeah I mailed them a letter today saying that I wanna have a hearing with them about this because they were dead wrong for the mistake they made and I shouldn't have to repay the money back. I talked to my mom's sister about it yesterday and she said it's possible that they could deduct some money from my income tax check to pay them back. I hope they don't do that because I need that income tax money because I wanna get a couple of things fixed on my car and I wanna buy a couple of new tires. If they do take some money from my income tax check, I hope they don't take most of it.

They can and probably will take the "full amount" from the "REFUND "of your income tax check! Click on the link below to read about what they call "Over payment" and what they do about it. Go to the right hand side in the blue and "click" on the 10th one down called "Overpayment of Benefits"
SORRY-- if the link in my other post did not work--hopefully this one will

HuntingtonM15 01-23-2015, 02:57 PM I agree that it was a terrible mistake on their part and it never should have happened. With that being said, if it really was money that you were not entitled to (even though you thought it was payment for something else), you would owe it back to them. Though, if the state paid it to you, I don't think they could take it from your Federal tax return. If you have a refund coming from the state, they could possibly deduct it from that.
isiahthomas 01-23-2015, 03:08 PM Well if they do take all my income tax money, I won't be mad. At least i'll still have my part time job.
isiahthomas 02-11-2015, 03:48 PM I got a letter from the Virginia employment office yesterday saying that my hearing about the money I owe them is gonna be next Thursday at 1pm. I called my previous job and I told them that I want them to be a witness at my hearing so the Virginia employment office can see that the week that they sent me the money is the same week I was paid from my previous job. The lady I talked to that hired me at my previous job said she doesn't mind being a witness at my hearing.

That is great! Glad the lady is willing to be a witness. It should rule in your favor. And glad your hearing is pretty soon. Get it over with and it should turn out good! ;)
isiahthomas 02-11-2015, 06:02 PM My dad is scared that him and my mom are gonna lose their house because of my situation with Virginia employment office. I told him I seriously doubt it if they come after him and my mom and take their house because I can't pay them back if I lose my case. I told him that they sent me another letter saying that if I don't pay them back soon that they're gonna garnish my unemployment money in the future and I said I'm ok with that.
Bonniegirl 02-11-2015, 06:11 PM Seriously??? Your Dad needs to quit!!! He shouldn't be saying stuff like that! 505 dollars isn't even that much money. And it's you that owe them. I seriously doubt if even he owed 505 dollars that they would take a house away! IDK why your dad is making things worse for you by getting your nervous over something like this! Shame on him!!
isiahthomas 02-12-2015, 03:04 PM Yeah my dad is acting like a b*tch. He got into a argument with me today about this asking me why did I spend the money. I've told him already several times that I didn't know the money came from the Virginia employment office because I got paid from my previous job the same week that the Virginia employment office paid me. I told him that the employment office should've told the bank to send the money back because they made a mistake. They shouldn't have sent the money in the first place because I didn't give them 2 job contacts. The only way they pay me is if I give them 2 job contacts.
Bonniegirl 02-12-2015, 07:35 PM He needs to not be hassling you at this time, and making you more nervous about everything! I wish he would realize that he isn't making the situation any better by the way he is acting. Is there anyway you can ask your Mom to talk to him and get him to stop? You said before you and your Mom had a good relationship.
isiahthomas 02-13-2015, 05:00 PM My dad isn't gonna listen to my mom about leaving me alone because he has arguments with her sometimes. She threatened to leave him a few times and she's never done it. I think she's scared to be by herself but if she was to divorce him, her sister in Cleveland would let her live with her. My dad needs to be by himself so he can be miserable. He's a miserable angry person and I'm really surprised that my mom has been married to him for 38 years because most black women would've left him a long time ago. The lady I talked to yesterday from the Virginia employment office said that my former job isn't allowed to be a witness at my hearing. She said if the deputy has some questions to ask my former job, he'll call them. I have a feeling I'm gonna lose and if that happens, then they'll have to garnish my unemployment money in the future which is what they told me in a letter they sent me. Hopefully if I get some government money if I'm not able to work, i'll send them some money instead of having them garnish my unemployment money in the future.
