“Sometimes I wonder; why are people so stupid? It never makes any sense.” Inspector Candace (CD) DeLorenzo looked at her partner, Inspector Nate Basso, “Do you have anything to add?”
“Nope, you made a point, and I don’t think I’ll argue against it.” CD just laughed, she didn’t know how they had gotten on the subject of ‘stupid people,’ but they had gotten there!
“DeLorenzo, my office now.” Captain Kate McCafferty demanded. She was in charge of the central felony division where CD and Nate worked in San Francisco.
“Captain?” CD asked her when she stepped into her office.
“I want you to work with Magda on a rape case. Jinny is on a vacation and I don’t want to give Nate something like this without you. And I already assigned Magda. I’ll give Nate something else, easier…like sorting through files.” Kate looked at CD, she could tell CD was kind of skeptic about this case, “Would you rather I not assign you to it?”
“Cap, why do you want me on this case, why not someone else?”
“You’ve closed all but 2 of your rape and sexual assault cases, Jinny hasn’t closed 8 but she’s on vacation, and I just don’t feel like Nate should work this without you, he doesn’t have enough experience quite yet. Do I need more reason?”
“No, I’ll go talk to Nate and Mag.” CD turned and walked away.
CD hated rape cases, they gave her the creeps. But she had to work them and attempt to solve them. She had once had the case of a twelve-year-old girl who was raped by her dad; he was never convicted so it was considered open. Her other one was a 23 year old who was raped and 6 months later murdered, that woman’s murder was never solved. True the 23-year-old’s case was 10 years ago, but the 12-year-old girl’s was only within the last six months, so it still haunted her. Plus she has had personal problems in this areas.
CD came upon Nate, “Hey, I’m going to work with Mag on a rape case that Cap wants me on. She’ll tell you what to do if you go talk to her.” Nate nodded and walked off.
“Magda,” CD called out when Inspector Magda Ramirez walked by, “I’m working the rape case with you, but I don’t have any details.”
Magda looked at her, “Great, c’mon, I’ll give you details on the way, we’ve got to talk to the victim.”
CD and Magda walked out to the car, “So this girl who’s 14 claimed to be raped by her dad, she believes he fled the country soon after.”
“Her name is…?”
“Oh, sorry, Michaela Right.”
CD stopped, “What’s her dad’s name?”
“Ricky.” Magda told her, CD looked pale, all of the color had drained from her face. She though back, it 17 years ago, when she herself was raped by her mom’s boy friend, Ricky Right. Magda was trying to get her attention, when she finally did, CD told her, “Oh sorry, I was just thinking about that 12 year old girl.” CD hated telling that to Mag, but she knew Magda would understand that. She knew how it felt when an officer didn’t close a case, when they couldn’t get thee father convicted, it was upsetting because you couldn’t help the person, and things like that may happen to them again.
The rest of the walk to the car was done in silence. Magda felt bead for CD, that case had been hard for her. Everyone at the station knew she didn’t get the father convicted.
When they got to the car, CD got in on the passenger’s side, “So where are we meeting her?”
“Holy Cross Hospital.”
CD just nodded, that’s where the 12 year old went, her name was Jamie Thomason, and CD gave Jamie her home and cell phone numbers so if she needed to talk she could just call her. Jamie called her often, CD became like the older sister Jamie never had. They both confided in her, and trusted each other with everything. It was amazing how unbreakable their bond was!
About 5 minutes later they arrived at the hospital, CD didn’t want to go in, but she had to, she knew it. They got out of the car and started toward the hospital when CD’s phone rang. She looked at Magda and said, “Give me some time to talk, it could be Jamie.”
Magda nodded and walked off. CD answered the phone:
“Hello?” CD said
“CD, it’s me…Jamie.” Jamie’s voice was shaking.
“Jamie? What’s wrong?”
“CD, I need you at my house, I’m scared.”
“Jamie, is it our dad?”
“Yeah, and he’s doing it all over again, he just locked me in my room.”
“Jamie, lit me call it in to my captain, then I’ll be right there.”
“Okay, but hurry!”
“I will Jamie, I promise, I will.” With that they both hung up. It was a good thing Jamie had a cell phone. CD called Mag (even though she was just inside) and explained, then called Cap and got the OK to go and break into the house if needed. CD got in the car and raced to Jamie’s house, maybe now she could get the guy convicted, and maybe now Jamie could get on with her life.
CD arrived at the house without backup, she had permission to break into the house if necessary, but wasn’t sure she should, until she heard the unmistakable sound of Jamie screaming. She tried knocking, but there was no answer. When she heard another shriek from inside the house, she busted down the door, ran to Jamie’s room and tried to open the door, but it was locked. So she broke it down. When she entered, she saw a horrible sight; Jamie’s dad had ripped off her clothing and obviously had beaten her into submission, into letting him torture her. When Jamie’s dad saw CD he claimed Jamie wanted to, but CD knew different, “SFPD, go get clothes on.” He left the room, “Jamie, get dressed then once he’s in custody I’ll take you to the hospital.”
Jamie nodded her head and CD left the room, Jamie’s father came out of the room, now fully clothed. CD cuffed him ad read him is rights. Jamie, now dressed came out of her room. She was crying, her face was red and bruised, CD felt so bad for her. They walked to the car and drove off.
