Some people still don’t understand the concept of white supremacy. Some people don’t even think white people have benefited from a legacy of institutional racism. Well, Clarissa—yes, the Clarissa from the popular 1990s Nickelodeon show Clarissa Explains it All —has popped up in meme form to make sure we’re all a little more educated.
In her latest lesson, Clarissa sheds some knowledge on the NAACP bombing that you may have missed because of the overwhelmingly little attention media outlets gave it. Yes, the devastating shooting at the Charlie Hebdo offices in Paris is heartbreaking, and it deserves every bit of coverage that it’s been given. But apparently threats to a black-led civil rights organization on home soil don’t warrant as much worry. That, my friends, condones the idea that white lives matter more than black lives. That is white supremacy.
In another meme, Clarissa explains how deeply ingrained racist beliefs may be and how harmful that is. Don’t believe Clarissa? The cop who killed Mike Brown in Ferguson never admitted to being racist; but describing the unarmed man he killed as a superhuman demon was a stereotypical racist portrayal of a black man, and ultimately led to him taking the life of someone he had already dehumanized in his head. That, dear readers, is white supremacy.
