I m planning to have a tooth extracted soon because of an abscess under it. I noticed that the top of a lower back (molar) tooth was chipped down tot he dentin. I went to have it examined on December 4, when the abscess was discovered.

I could have some concerns post-extraction. I already had two of my molar teeth extracted in December of 2013, so I could end up having an odd number of lower teeth (13).

Anyone on this board ever had their teeth extracted? Plus, I wonder if any celebrities or famous people had to have some teeth extracted for any reason?

OH Nuts!

I had a wisdom tooth pulled a few years ago. It wasn't bad - but follow your dentists instructions closely to avoid a dry socket - it's a possible complication BUT IS VERY RARE. My dentist said she only had 2 of these for every 1,000 extractions.

BTW She was really great - gentle and calming - very sweet :called me later in the day to make sure everything was going OK.

Having my "Wisdom Teeth" extracted in 1978 and having several Root Canals since then all I can say is:

 OUCH!

PS The "Jolt" of pain you get when undergo a Root Canal (Yes the pain last but a couple of seconds) IMO isn't the biggest pain. That happens when you get the bill from your Credit Card Company INCOMING!!!.

I had 3 wisdom teeth extracted Nov. 2013. I was given twilight anesthesia and I don't remember much about it. I just remember telling the doctor that I felt light-headed and that was it. Then I remember him putting things away and I asked if we were done and he said "Yes."

Once I was able to leave the office I took a cab home and rested for most of the day. Once the meds wore off I was in a lot of pain and I was prescribed painkillers, but I never took them. Doc said to only take them if the pain was "extreme." Over-the-counter Motrin was enough for me.

Thankfully, I had no complications from the procedure (bleeding, swelling...). The pain lasted for about a week and it was aggravated when I had to yawn or sneezee since it stretched my mouth open.

I now have to have another one extracted. X-rays show that I have a tooth growing in under the gums. I have a consultation appt. w/ the oral surgeon (same guy) next Wed. and then I have to book the extraction appt.

I had all my wisdom teeth pulled out at 17 in order to be fitted for braces, my cheeks did swell up a bit and I could't sleep because of the pain that first night.

I had wisdom teeth out when I was young. Only one time I remember having trouble with. One was really impacted or something. But I was young and mom took care of me after! And a couple of regular extractions more recently! It's not that bad these days. I was scared and apprehensive before and when it was all over I was like is that all? Just it's kind of gross afterwards and you feel a little woozy from the Novocain and swallowing blood, but just follow the dentist instructions , take the antibiotics and the pain meds that they give you and you will be fine by the next day!

I had my wisdom teeth pulled-out four years ago...the first time was painful because one tooth grew in sideways but the second time was fine.

I have had 7 teeth extracted. They all went smoothly. Very important to follow the doctor's instructions. I didn't need any pain medication at all. Good luck!

I had my consultation appt. on Wednesday. Surgeon says he has to make a small incision in the gums and chip the tooth in 2 to pull it out. Says it's a little more complicated to remove since it's under the gums and sideways.

I booked the extraction for March.

That's what was similar to my tooth extraction...except it wasn't under the gums.

Eventually, I'd be willing to have all of my molars extracted, considering the fact that I have already lost a couple of them. I would hate to lose enough teeth to be left permanently unable to eat solid food, though.

But I think it's rare that someone has to extract that many teeth these days.

I know that many people have had problems with their wisdom teeth (and since you asked about celebrities, Michael Jackson was one of them). But I have no problem with mine (even though I find it difficult to brush them). Maybe that is because my teeth aren't that close together (I even lack two front teeth in my upper jaw, so I have a gap there), so the wisdom teeth had room to grow.

I had to have all 4 of my wisdom teeth extracted in 2001. Needless to say, I paid extra to be put out due to a painful experience I had with the dentist I went to when I was little. When I woke up, I felt fine, but had to keep things clean and maintained as the gums closed up where the teeth used to be.

The sad truth about our teeth is that the tooth is actually a part of the human body that just cannot heal itself. And damage to the teeth in absolutely permanent, which is why the teeth have to be taken out if the damage gets severe. If a person loses so many teeth (like, for example, losing most or all of his molars or something), this may result in a permanent loss of that person's ability to eat solid food (such as burgers, pizza, fruits/vegetables, etc.).
