I'm pretty sure Jack could have avoided his failing cooking school problem simply when after Dean Travers was wondering what was going on after Jack yelled "I can't tell you!" One would have thought he would then say to the Dean Ben Baxter's trying to cheat off him.

I guess Jack didn't want to be a snitch. It just ended up creating another problem for him though.

Yeah maybe Jack didn't want to make a scene and anger Dean Travers even more that he was just concentrating on passing the graduation exam to take notice of the other guy.
