Cowboys avoid 0-2 start, beat Titans 26-10
By TERESA M. WALKER | AP Pro Football Writer
Sep. 14, 2014
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) The Dallas Cowboys avoided an 0-2 start by bouncing back in a big way thanks to a dominating performance from DeMarco Murray and their beleaguered defense.
Murray ran for 167 yards and a touchdown, Dan Bailey kicked four field goals, and the Dallas Cowboys beat the Tennessee Titans 26-10 Sunday.
''DeMarco ran really well,'' Dallas coach Jason Garrett said. ''He ran hard and he ran downhill. When you can do that, drive the football again, again and again and control the football and control the game it gives you a great chance to win.''
The loss spoiled Tennessee first-year coach Ken Whisenhunt's home debut.
The Cowboys haven't started 0-2 since 2010 when Wade Phillips was fired midway through the season and Jason Garrett was promoted to head coach. They didn't come close to staying winless Sunday, jumping ahead 16-0 in the first half to kick off a two-game road swing strong.
''Starting 0-2 is a very, very big hole you don't want to be in,'' Tony Romo said.
The Dallas defense had two sacks and two interceptions that led to 10 points.
Romo easily shook off his three interceptions in the season-opening loss to San Francisco. With Murray running so well, Romo was 19 of 29 for 176 yards and a TD.
The Titans (1-1) struggled in all areas after winning their opener at Kansas City and missed on their first 2-0 start since 2008.
''We missed tackles,'' Whisenhunt said. ''They ran the football well. Give them credit. They did to us what we did to Kansas City last week.''
Dez Bryant had a 3-yard TD catch in a game where he went to the locker room after the opening drive to get his shoulder checked out. Murray lost a fumble for a second straight game but he topped 100 yards in the second quarter. He wound up averaging 5.8 yards a carry for the game.
''It's still early,'' Murray said. ''We still have a lot of work to do. ... We're headed in the right way, though.''
Little slowed down the Cowboys. They held the ball for 41 minutes, 11 seconds and finished with a 368-314 edge in total offense, delighting their many fans who at one point chanted ''Let's Go Cowboys'' as Dallas ran out the clock.
Even with linebacker Justin Durant out with an injured groin and cornerback Orlando Scandrick suspended, the Cowboys got some big stops in the second half.
Rolando McClain, who starred in college at Alabama, ended one Tennessee drive slipping his hand just underneath a Locker pass for an interception early in the fourth. He might have had a touchdown if not for an official whistling the play dead as an incompletion, which was overturned after a review.
The Cowboys also forced the Titans to turn it over on downs after facing first-and-goal at the Dallas 6 with 6:22 left.
Whisenhunt is the Titans' third head coach since their last playoff berth in 2008, and hope was high for a team coming off a big win at Kansas City.
It didn't last long as the Titans could not have looked much worse for the first 30 minutes. The only highlights were Jurrell Casey coming up with two of three sacks. Jake Locker, who had a 111.4 passer rating in the opener, struggled missing receivers both too short and too high. He had only 26 yards with a passer rating of 7.6 at halftime.
After Barry Church intercepted a Locker pass, Murray ran four times and ran 40 yards and capped the drive by shoving the ball over the goal line on a 3-yard TD run for a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter. Bailey added field goals of 48, 44 and 51 for a 16-0 halftime lead.
Tennessee finally got going scoring 10 points in the third quarter, including a 61-yard TD pass from Locker to Delanie Walker. The tight end bounced off Cowboys cornerback Morris Claiborne and outran defenders to the end zone for a 61-yard TD with 7:45 left. Locker finished 18 of 34 for 234 yards.
''We just dug ourselves too big a hole,'' Locker said.
Notes: Romo extended his streak with at least one TD pass to 30 straight games. ... Murray had his ninth 100-yard rushing game of his career and second straight to start this season. ... Titans CB Jason McCourty hurt his groin and missed the second half. ... Dallas now has won three of four in this series. ... Titans fall to 9-7 in home openers since 1999.

Romo, Bryant carry Cowboys past Texans 20-17 in OT
By SCHUYLER DIXON | AP Sports Writer
Oct. 5, 2014
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Tony Romo took a few extra moments on the ground, right arm raised to celebrate a long touchdown pass after he escaped what looked like a sure sack for J.J. Watt.
Then, when the 34-year-old quarterback playing with a surgically repaired back made another off-balance throw under pressure in overtime, Dez Bryant's spectacular catch saved the Dallas Cowboys from a late meltdown.
Bryant's jump-ball grab set up Dan Bailey's winning 49-yard field goal, and the Cowboys bounced back from blowing a 10-point lead late in fourth quarter to beat the Houston Texans 20-17 on Sunday.
''Just got to come down with it, come down with it,'' said Bryant, who had game highs with nine catches and 85 yards. ''That's something I always tell Tony. If the ball is in the air, I'm going to try my best to come down with it.''
After the Texans scored twice in the last 2:27 of regulation, Bailey's miss from 53 yards on the final play ended a franchise record streak of 30 straight made field goals.
''We had to go down and basically win the game twice,'' said Romo, who threw for 324 yards with two touchdowns with an interception that took away a scoring chance in the fourth quarter. ''You just put your work hat on and go out and execute.''
The Cowboys (4-1) won their fourth straight for the first time since 2011 heading into a trip to Super Bowl champion Seattle, their only road game in a stretch of six games.
The Texans (3-2) rallied behind Arian Foster, who had 157 yards rushing and a tying 1-yard score with 41 seconds left in regulation.
''Football is a brutal game,'' Watt said. ''It's brutal on your body. It's brutal on your emotions. To fight back the way we did, to show that resilience, it was good to see. But at the end of the day, we lost the game.''
NFL rushing leader DeMarco Murray had 136 yards for Dallas, his fifth straight 100-yard game to start the season.
After the Cowboys stopped the Texans on the first possession of overtime, they were facing third-and-8. Romo unloaded off his back foot to avoid a sack. Bryant reached over Johnathan Joseph on a 37-yard gain to the Houston 31. Bailey's kick came three plays later.
''Dez, I've seen him make it a million times,'' said Jason Witten, who became the third tight end in NFL history with 10,000 career yards receiving. ''I don't know that there's two better people at clutch moments than Tony and him.''
The Texans pulled even by converting a fourth down on a drive to Randy Bullock's 29-yard field, then got the ball back in just 32 seconds. They went 45 yards in four plays to Foster's second touchdown with 41 seconds left.
Houston had just 86 yards total offense at halftime, but Foster had 117 rushing himself in the second half. He went 48 yards on consecutive plays, the latter from 15 to put Houston ahead 7-3 in the third quarter.
Romo answered four plays later on probably the best test so far of his back after surgery last December to repair a herniated disk.
He spun to his right as Watt closed in, then threw about as far as he could with more pressure coming. Terrance Williams had an easy 43-yard catch in the end zone when Houston's Kendrick Lewis fell at the goal line just before the ball arrived.
''Certainly it's one for the ages with Romo,'' coach Jason Garrett said. ''There's a handful of those he's had throughout his career, and I think you can add that one to the list.''
Witten helped set up Williams' score with a 34-yard catch to join Tony Gonzalez and Shannon Sharpe as the only tight ends with 10,000 career yards receiving. He finished with 59 yards to put him at 10,014.
Murray, who had his fourth fumble in five games in the first quarter, was denied a chance to join Jim Brown and O.J. Simpson as the only running backs with at least 100 yards and one touchdown in the first five games of the season.
It looked like he would get the TD, but Romo instead threw a 2-yard scoring pass to Bryant for a 17-7 lead in the fourth quarter.
NOTES: Texans WR Andre Johnson became the second-faster receiver to 950 catches by finishing with five for 954 after 159 games. He'll have to wait at least another week to be the second fastest to 13,000 yards, finishing with 58 to fall 19 yards short. He has two more games to beat Marvin Harrison's mark of 162 games. Jerry Rice did it in 154. ... Murray set a Dallas' franchise record with his fifth straight 100-yard game to start the season. Emmitt Smith had four in 1995.

Romo returns, Cowboys beat Jaguars 31-17 in London
By CHRIS LEHOURITES | AP Sports Writer
Nov. 9, 2014
LONDON (AP) Boosted by Tony Romo's return, America's Team became an international success.
Sidelined for one week because of a back injury, the Dallas Cowboys quarterback starred in the team's first regular-season game outside the United States, throwing three touchdown passes Sunday in a 31-17 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
''We had to win this game,'' Romo said.
Romo originally was hurt two weeks ago, fracturing two small bones in his back. He started in London to help the Cowboys (7-3) snap a two-game losing streak.
Romo completed 20 of 27 passes for 246 yards against the Jaguars (1-9) and finished with a season-high passer rating of 138.8.
The game was played at Wembley Stadium, the home of England's national soccer team. It was the last of three regular-season NFL games this year in the British capital.
The Cowboys have played outside the United States 10 times, but this was the first game that actually affected their record. With Dallas comfortably ahead, Romo sat out the final 6:42.
''Just sore. Anybody who's had anything broken before knows it's uncomfortable at times,'' Romo said. ''A little banged up. A lot of guys are banged up. At the end of the day, no one actually cares once you step out onto the field.''
Romo threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Jason Witten in the first quarter and then hit Dez Bryant for a pair of TDs in the second, the first from 35 yards and the second from 68.
''Didn't seem like he had any physical restrictions, moved around in the pocket, some subtle pocket movements to allow things to develop,'' Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. ''He really looked like himself.''
DeMarco Murray ran for 100 yards on 19 carries and also had 31 yards receiving for Dallas. He had his record streak of eight straight 100-yard games to start a season snapped by the Arizona Cardinals last week.
Bryant gained all of his 158 yards in the second quarter, and did it by breaking several tackles on each touchdown catch.
Joseph Randle scored on a 40-yard run for Dallas in the second half on his first touch of the game.
Denard Robinson scored two touchdowns for the Jaguars, running in from the 32 to give Jacksonville a 7-3 lead in the first quarter and then from the 1 late in the fourth. Blake Bortles, playing with a sore left wrist, was 22 of 37 for 290 yards with one interception.
''We kind of shot ourselves in the foot for two or three drives after that (first touchdown) and never really got it rolling again,'' Bortles said.
The Cowboys took the lead when Dan Bailey kicked a 54-yard field goal, but Robinson briefly gave the Jaguars the lead with his touchdown run.
Soon after, everything changed.
Dallas and Romo again stalled on offense, but punt returner Ace Sanders let the ball drop through his arms for a fumble, recovered by Cowboys safety C.J. Spillman on the 6.
Murray ran for 4 yards on the first play. After a pass to Bryant was broken up, Romo found Witten in the end zone.
''That was the play early on that really swung the tide,'' Garrett said of the fumble. ''We played pretty solid football after that.''
The Jaguars picked up two more points on a safety in the fourth quarter when Cowboys linebacker Kyle Wilber was flagged for holding in the end zone on a punt. But that did little to sway the outcome.
''We played terrible. We played the way that a college team should be playing,'' Jaguars safety Johnathan Cyprien said. ''We know for a fact we're better than that. The team knows that.''
Romo led Dallas to six straight wins and a 6-1 start, but he injured his back in an overtime loss to the Washington Redskins. With Brandon Weeden starting for him last week against the Cardinals, the Cowboys lost again.
From the start on Sunday, Romo looked good but didn't seem 100 percent. He overthrew a wide open Witten on third down on the first series, and then threw the short pass to Witten for the first touchdown when he likely would have run it himself without the injury.
Romo, who has thrown at least one TD pass in an NFL-record 37 consecutive road games, was also well protected by the offensive line, despite the Jaguars having one of the top pass rushes in the league.
''He missed one early to Witten, a touchdown opportunity for us,'' Garrett said of Romo. ''But really besides that I thought he played a really good ball game, really looked like he saw the field well.''
Weeden, who is 0-1 as a starting quarterback for the Cowboys after last week's loss, came on for Romo in the final minutes and played until the end as the fans emptied the stadium early.
NOTES: Romo is now 25-5 in November, by far the best of any of his months. ... The players on both teams wore poppies on their shirts and helmets to commemorate Remembrance Day in Britain, the equivalent of Memorial Day in the United States. The little red flower is worn by many British people every year to honor Britain's war dead in the days leading up to Nov. 11, the day in 1918 when hostilities ceased at the end of World War I. ... The NFL will play three more regular-season games at Wembley Stadium next year. The Jaguars, who are now halfway through a four-year deal to play in London, will face the Buffalo Bills on Oct. 25, while the Miami Dolphins play the New York Jets on Oct. 4 and the Kansas City Chiefs meet the Detroit Lions on Nov. 1.

Romo, Cowboys reach playoffs in 42-7 rout of Colts
By SCHUYLER DIXON | AP Sports Writer
Dec. 21, 2014
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Tony Romo helped dump a bucket on Jason Garrett and playfully shoved him the same way the Dallas coach often does to his players.
The Cowboys had long since known their four-year playoff drought was over Sunday when they finally got to celebrate in the final seconds of a dominating 42-7 win over Indianapolis that clinched the NFC East title.
A special moment made perfect sense for the quarterback with a history of crushing late-season failures and a coach who kept getting Dallas to meaningful finales but couldn't shake questions about his future because he couldn't break through with a postseason trip.
''In so many ways, this is such a long journey and to get to a point to achieve your first goal of winning the division title, a lot goes into that,'' said Garrett, in his fourth full season. ''I think the way you play in securing that matters, and I thought we played really, really well.''
Romo threw four touchdown passes and broke Troy Aikman's franchise record for yards passing while the Cowboys (11-4) emphatically ended a three-game home losing streak, scoring touchdowns on their first four possessions.
Dallas had an opening for its first division title and postseason berth since 2009 because of Philadelphia's 27-24 loss at Washington on Saturday. The Eagles were eliminated with the Cowboys' win.
The Colts (10-5) didn't have much to play for with the AFC South title secured, and looked like it while they barely avoided their first shutout loss in 21 years.
''Yeah, it was a dismal start,'' said Andrew Luck, who threw for a season-low 109 yards with two interceptions and was pulled in the third quarter with the game out of hand. ''It was bad. A lot of bad. Not much good, if any.''
The Cowboys had already ended their three-year rut of 8-8 finishes that included losses in finales that kept them out of the playoffs. But they had to keep winning to make sure they got in.
Tight end Jason Witten had a touchdown catch and 90 yards receiving to reach his 11th straight season with at least 600 yards. He had the memorable one-liner that it couldn't be ''the same old story'' before training camp during the string of frustrating .500 finishes.
Then it kept being the same old story - until Sunday, when Dallas kept alive its hopes for a first-round bye as well.
Romo led scoring drives of 80 and 75 yards, the latter ending on a 24-yard pass to Cole Beasley. He spun away from a shoulder tackle by D'Qwell Jackson and ran the final 13 yards to the end zone.
The 34-year-old Romo broke Aikman's record on a 25-yard touchdown pass to Witten, his teammate since they came into the league together 11 years ago.
''He's obviously just got a special place in my heart,'' said Romo, who has 32,971 career yards, 29 more than the three-time Super Bowl winner.
Coming off back surgery that kept him out of last year's season-ending loss to the Eagles, and another back injury sustained against Washington in October, Romo had his fifth game with a passer rating of at least 135. He completed 18 for 20 passes for 218 yards.
''I think the way he's played this year, the way great quarterbacks in this league have played for a long time, that's how Troy played,'' said Garrett, who was Aikman's backup in Dallas. ''We ran the ball really, really well, controlled the line of scrimmage. And when Tony had opportunities today, and really throughout the year, he cashed in on them.''
NFL rushing leader DeMarco Murray played with a broken left hand, but the Cowboys didn't need much from him. He had 58 yards, with a 1-yard score.
With a home playoff game already in hand and little chance to get a first-round bye, Indianapolis sat receiver T.Y. Hilton (hamstring injury) and right tackle Gosder Cherilus, who is nursing a groin problem.
Trailing 35-0 in the third quarter, Luck went to the bench in favor of Matt Hasselbeck as the Colts set season lows in points and total yards (229) for the second straight week. They had just 1 yard rushing.
''They played at a different speed than we played at, and the score is indicative of that,'' Colts coach Chuck Pagano said. ''We're going to have to get over this in a hurry.''
Indianapolis had Dallas beaten on a fake punt after three straight running plays on its first possession. But a backpedaling Dewey McDonald, left uncovered on the outside, dropped punter Pat McAfee's perfect throw.
On the next play, Romo put Dallas up 14-0 with a 19-yard pass to Dez Bryant, who caught a scoring pass in his 12th consecutive game against the AFC to extend the longest interconference streak since the 1970 merger.
NOTES: Murray now has 1,745 yards and needs 29 to break career NFL rushing leader Emmitt Smith's franchise record of 1,773 yards from 1995. ... The Colts barely extended their scoring streak to 336 games, second-longest behind Denver's 355.

Well guys, the Cowboys are just a win away from staying perfect on the road and possibly clinching either a Bye Week or the #1 Seed in the NFC Conference, but 1st things 1st, they must def. the Washington Redskins in D.C.
Can they get payback or will the Redskins sweep the Cowboys for the 2nd this decade?
That's the Question!
But in the meantime....
HOW BOUT THEM COWBOYS?!

Several Weeks later....
