Flacco throws 5 TDs, Ravens rout Buccaneers

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Joe Flacco and the Baltimore Ravens were intent on getting their season back on track, and there was nothing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could do to stop them.
''You're going to find out this is a very good football team,'' coach John Harbaugh said Sunday after Flacco threw for five touchdowns in just over 16 minutes to set the tone for a 48-17 rout of the struggling Bucs. ''And to play the way we did in a game that's kind of a business game, a game we need to win to do the things we want to do, it speaks a lot to who we are as a football team.''
Still smarting from a subpar road performance that ended a three-game winning streak, Flacco was nearly flawless against a defense that had no answers for Baltimore's passing or running attack.
Flacco threw for TDs to four different receivers and completed passes to five others as well. Justin Forsett, Bernard Pierce and Lorenzo Taliaferro contributed to a productive ground game.
''It was very enjoyable. You don't get those too often in this league. ... It was pretty crazy,'' Flacco said. ''It happened so quickly. It was such an awkward situation, but it was definitely fun for us.''
Baltimore (4-2) scored on six straight possessions to begin the game, with Flacco becoming the first NFL quarterback to throw five TD passes in the opening half since Tom Brady did it in 2009 on the way to New England beating Tennessee 59-0.
Torrey Smith caught the first two, and Kamar Aiken, Michael Campanaro and Steve Smith followed for a 35-0 lead early in the second quarter.
''It was really surreal, and a lot of fun at that point,'' Flacco said. ''At that point, shoot, we were on pace for almost 16 touchdowns.''
Tampa Bay (1-5) trailed 38-0 at halftime and was embarrassed for the second time in six games under coach Lovie Smith. The Bucs were beaten 56-14 at Atlanta on Sept. 18, but rebounded from that debacle with a win over Pittsburgh and an overtime loss at New Orleans, outings that left Smith feeling his team was headed in the right direction.
''They're a good football team, and we're not a good football team. It's as simple as that,'' Smith said after dropping to 0-3 at home.
''We've all,'' Bucs offensive tackle Demar Dotson offered, ''got a lot of getting better to do.''
Flacco was sacked four times and Baltimore was just 1 of 11 on third-down conversions a week ago in a disappointing 20-13 loss at Indianapolis, however the offense was in synch from the very start against the Bucs' porous Tampa2 defense.
With help from Forsett's 52-yard run on the second play from scrimmage, the Ravens moved 80 yards in four plays to take a quick lead on Flacco's 15-yard scoring pass to Torrey Smith. His next three TD throws - 9 yards to Torrey Smith, 17 yards to Aiken and 19 yards to Campanaro - came on third-down throws.
''It was a great start, about as fast a start as you're going to get, really in all three phases.'' Harbaugh said. ''But for the offense to do what they did early ... it's just historic.''
Steve Smith is Baltimore's leading receiver, but was hardly involved until he beat cornerback Alterraun Verner deep down the left sideline for a 56-yard score that made it 35-0 just over a minute into the second quarter. It was the 14th-year pro seventh career TD against the Bucs.
The Ravens said it also was the fastest - 16:03 - that any NFL player has thrown for five TDs in a game. When the Bucs finally stopped Flacco for the first time, forcing Baltimore to settle for Justin Tucker's 46-yard field goal midway through the second quarter, Tampa Bay safety Bradley McDougald raised his right fist in triumph.
Flacco finished 21 of 29 for 306 yards with no interceptions. He was barely pressured by the Tampa Bay pass rush and was not sacked.
The Ravens outgained the Bucs 347 yards to 101 in rolling to their big halftime lead. The Bucs broke through with a 47-yard field goal early in the third quarter and Mike Glennon threw touchdown passes of 17 yards to Mike Evans and 3 yards to Louis Murphy.
Glennon went 24 of 44 for 314 yards, two TDs and one interception in his third start of the season for the Bucs, who lost Josh McCown to a thumb injury during its lopsided loss to Atlanta.
In addition to Jimmy Smith's first-quarter interception which set up Baltimore's second touchdown, the Ravens sacked Glennon five times for 37 yards.
Steve Smith finished with five catches for 110 yards, his eighth 100-yard day against Tampa Bay, a team he tormented for 13 seasons as a member of the Carolina Panthers. Forsett rushed for 111 yards on 14 carries.
NOTES: Pierce scored Baltimore's final touchdown on a 4-yard run late in the third quarter. ... The Ravens' Tucker had a 64-yard field goal attempt blocked on the final play of the first half. ... Tampa Bay was limited to 87 yards rushing. Doug Martin had 45 on 11 attempts, and ex-Raven Bobby Rainey carried seven times for 42.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) Down by 10 points in the second quarter, their playoff chances fading, the Baltimore Ravens finally picked up a first down.
After that, the Miami Dolphins couldn't stop them.
The Ravens rallied with consecutive touchdown drives of 97 and 75 yards, then added the clinching score after a favorable replay reversal to beat Miami 28-13 Sunday.
A gamble by coach John Harbaugh in the third quarter helped. The Ravens made a first down on fourth-and-1 in their own territory, jump-starting the TD drive that put them ahead.
The victory gave Baltimore (8-5) a significant edge over Miami (7-6) in the AFC's scramble for a wild-card playoff berth. The Ravens also tightened the race for the AFC North title, helped by a loss by first-place Cincinnati (8-4-1) to Pittsburgh.
''Our fate is in our hands,'' Baltimore linebacker Terrell Suggs said. ''If we win, we're in. That's the mentality we'll have down the stretch.''
The Dolphins, who haven't been to the postseason since 2008, are now a long shot with three games to go. Their frustration boiled over in the final minutes, when defensive tackle Jared Odrick yelled at coach Joe Philbin on the sideline after a long Ravens gain.
''Emotions were running high,'' Odrick said. ''I probably should have calmed down a little earlier.''
Said Philbin: ''Football's an emotional game. We had a discussion. I've already had another discussion with him. Football gets fiery out there. It's good.''
But the Dolphins showed little fire in the final three quarters, when they were outgained 425-161. The Ravens played 17 minutes before they made a first down and still finished with 26 first downs and 447 yards.
Elvis Dumervil led Baltimore's defensive charge with 3 1/2 sacks, increasing his season total to a franchise-record 16. Miami's Ryan Tannehill threw for 227 yards and a score, but was sacked six times.
Baltimore allowed the Dolphins only 249 yards.
''We settled down and started grasping how they were trying to play us,'' Dumervil said. ''We started making plays.''
The Ravens' Joe Flacco went 25 for 33 for 269 yards and two touchdowns, and overcame an interception in the end zone. He also ran for a score.
Flacco and Harbaugh improved to 5-0 against the Dolphins, including four wins in Miami. The Ravens won without defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, suspended during the week for a performance-enhancing substance violation, and they bounced back from a last-minute loss last week at home to San Diego.
''We've got a team that's playing pretty well right now and gaining some confidence,'' Flacco said.
Leading 14-13, the Ravens were helped by a replay reversal midway through the fourth quarter. Flacco fumbled attempting to throw and Miami recovered, but a review determined his arm was moving forward when he lost the ball, and the play was ruled an incomplete pass.

The Dolphins gave up 183 yards rushing and have allowed 661 in the past three games.

''We've got an offensive line that can do something like that,'' Harbaugh said. ''We had decided if we got close there, we were going to go for it.''

Miami was up 10-0 in the second quarter when a long completion and scoring threat were negated by a penalty on guard Mike Pouncey for being downfield on the play. That infraction seemed to deflate the Dolphins.
''It's definitely disappointing, especially having the lead, having the upper hand early on, then falling apart,'' Miami linebacker Jelani Jenkins said.
Notes: Dolphins S Louis Delmas was carted off the field in the fourth quarter with a right knee injury. Jenkins left the game in the third quarter with a foot injury and didn't return. C Samson Satele left the game with an undisclosed injury in the fourth quarter. ... Ravens CB Anthony Levine left the game in the first quarter with concussion and didn't return. BALTIMORE (AP) At this point in the season, when results count far more than style, the Baltimore Ravens will happily accept a flawed victory.
That is precisely what they got Sunday.
The Ravens trailed at halftime and never built a comfortable lead against lowly Jacksonville, yet did just enough to squeeze out a 20-12 win to stay in the thick of the AFC playoff race.
Eight sacks of rookie Blake Bortles and a touchdown on a blocked punt were the highlights of an otherwise forgettable performance by Baltimore.
The Ravens (9-5) scored just once with their offense on the field and gained only 31 yards rushing through three quarters. The usually reliable Justin Tucker missed two field goal tries, and all three units made enough mistakes to keep a football coach up late at night - even after a victory.
''We had too many to overcome to play the kind of football we wanted to play,'' coach John Harbaugh said. ''Too many long-yardage situations, too many penalties, too many special teams penalties ... too many things we had to clean up.''
But the defense was sound, and there were enough positives to enable Baltimore to escape with its fourth win in five games.
''Our guys have the ability to overcome adversity and have the ability to keep pounding and keep fighting and not let self-inflicted wounds overcome us,'' Harbaugh said.
Terrell Suggs was credited with 2 1/2 sacks and rookie Timmy Jernigan, starting for the suspended Haloti Ngata, had two.
''We're doing what we just do best - knocking down quarterbacks,'' said linebacker Elvis Dumervil, who had a sack to match his single-season high of 17.
Jacksonville (2-12) tried just about everything in its bid to pull off an upset, including an onside kick and a fake punt. Both worked, but it wasn't enough to earn the Jaguars their first win on the road.
Joe Flacco went 20 for 30 for 221 yards and a touchdown for the Ravens, who blanked the Jaguars over the final 30 minutes.
Bortles completed 21 of 37 passes for 210 yards, and an interception that came in the game's final minute. He threw under pressure for most of the game - Baltimore's season-high eight sacks increased the number Jacksonville has yielded this season to 62.
Bortles played much of the game with a sprained right foot and was in a walking boot afterward.
''They're great up front. We knew that coming into the game,'' Bortles said of the Ravens. ''A lot of the sacks were on me holding the ball too long. It's something that I'm working on and have to do better.''
The Jaguars' points came on four field goals by Josh Scobee.
''No touchdowns,'' coach Gus Bradley lamented. ''Even if we get one, one touchdown, it gives us a great opportunity in this game.''
After leaving to jeers on their first series of the second half, the Ravens mounted an 80-yard drive to take a 17-12 lead with 8:34 left in the third quarter. Flacco went 5 of 5 for 65 yards, including a 27-yard completion to Owen Daniels and a 3-yard touchdown pass to the tight end.
The Jaguars were then poised for a three-and-out, but punter Bryan Anger flipped a pass to Will Ta'ufo'ou for 19 yards to extend the drive. Five plays later, however, Jacksonville punted.
From that point, neither team had much success moving the ball until the Ravens put together a late 49-yard march that produced a field goal and an eight-point cushion with 1:11 remaining.
''Obviously it didn't go as smoothly as we would have liked,'' Daniels said, ''but that's the way it is.''
Baltimore trailed 12-10 at halftime after gaining only 13 yards on the ground and going 0 for 6 on third-down conversions.
Three straight plays during the game's opening series showed why Jacksonville came to town with only two wins. After tight end Marcedes Lewis dropped a second-down pass, Bortles missed connecting with a wide-open Cecil Shorts.
On fourth down, Baltimore's Darian Stewart burst through the line to block Anger's punt. Kamar Aiken scooped up the ball and went 11 yards for a touchdown, Baltimore's first score on a blocked punt since Ed Reed did it against Seattle in 2003.
From there, the only scoring in the first half came on field goals.

''Our guys have the ability to overcome adversity and have the ability to keep pounding and keep fighting and not let self-inflicted wounds overcome us,'' Harbaugh said.
Terrell Suggs was credited with 2 1/2 sacks and rookie Timmy Jernigan, starting for the suspended Haloti Ngata, had two.
''We're doing what we just do best - knocking down quarterbacks,'' said linebacker Elvis Dumervil, who had a sack to match his single-season high of 17.
Jacksonville (2-12) tried just about everything in its bid to pull off an upset, including an onside kick and a fake punt. Both worked, but it wasn't enough to earn the Jaguars their first win on the road.
Joe Flacco went 20 for 30 for 221 yards and a touchdown for the Ravens, who blanked the Jaguars over the final 30 minutes.
Bortles completed 21 of 37 passes for 210 yards, and an interception that came in the game's final minute. He threw under pressure for most of the game - Baltimore's season-high eight sacks increased the number Jacksonville has yielded this season to 62.
Bortles played much of the game with a sprained right foot and was in a walking boot afterward.
''They're great up front. We knew that coming into the game,'' Bortles said of the Ravens. ''A lot of the sacks were on me holding the ball too long. It's something that I'm working on and have to do better.''
The Jaguars' points came on four field goals by Josh Scobee.
''No touchdowns,'' coach Gus Bradley lamented. ''Even if we get one, one touchdown, it gives us a great opportunity in this game.''
After leaving to jeers on their first series of the second half, the Ravens mounted an 80-yard drive to take a 17-12 lead with 8:34 left in the third quarter. Flacco went 5 of 5 for 65 yards, including a 27-yard completion to Owen Daniels and a 3-yard touchdown pass to the tight end.
The Jaguars were then poised for a three-and-out, but punter Bryan Anger flipped a pass to Will Ta'ufo'ou for 19 yards to extend the drive. Five plays later, however, Jacksonville punted.
From that point, neither team had much success moving the ball until the Ravens put together a late 49-yard march that produced a field goal and an eight-point cushion with 1:11 remaining.
''Obviously it didn't go as smoothly as we would have liked,'' Daniels said, ''but that's the way it is.''
Baltimore trailed 12-10 at halftime after gaining only 13 yards on the ground and going 0 for 6 on third-down conversions.
Three straight plays during the game's opening series showed why Jacksonville came to town with only two wins. After tight end Marcedes Lewis dropped a second-down pass, Bortles missed connecting with a wide-open Cecil Shorts.
On fourth down, Baltimore's Darian Stewart burst through the line to block Anger's punt. Kamar Aiken scooped up the ball and went 11 yards for a touchdown, Baltimore's first score on a blocked punt since Ed Reed did it against Seattle in 2003.
From there, the only scoring in the first half came on field goals.
