View Full Version : Bed mattresses
Coffeecup 12-17-2014, 10:34 PM I heard on the radio today we are suppose to get new mattresses every 5 years. I thought to myself I have pillows older than that. One of my xmas gifts is to get new pillows for the ones I have are close to the thickness of a pancake. Any of you change your mattresses every 5 years?
Fleet 12-18-2014, 01:17 AM They should still be okay at 5 years. I would say more like 10+ years. I have a Spring Air pillowtop mattress that is 15 years old and is still in good shape. No tears and no sagging.
Mace Dolex 12-18-2014, 02:36 AM I heard that 8 years is the maximum even if its still sturdy and cushy its still collecting body sweat therefore creating bacteria which bring with it bedbugs.

And dust mites!!! Ewww gross. :p Maybe the mattress stores are just trying to scare us into buying new ones! Do they care about us getting bedbugs and dust mites or do they just want to make a sale?
Coffeecup 12-20-2014, 12:29 PM The only time I really nervous about sleeping on a mattress, is when it is someone else's mattress. I am tad squeamish about hotels, but i keep my underwear on. I am sure they add bleach but sometimes you wonder how clean the sheets are. Fortunately I have done NO time in jail. Wouldn't like their beds.
DJM77 12-20-2014, 12:54 PM I have no idea how old my mattress is, but it's a lot older than 5 years.
veggie-tari-jenn 12-22-2014, 02:18 AM nope...change it when its worn out...

Well look at it this way, you can wash your bedsheets as many times as you like but how do go about washing a mattress? Its a tad big to fit in a washing machine.

Yeah well you have a point I guess. But because of the bedsheets our bodys never directly touch the mattress anyway. ;) And if you are a clean person and people who share your bed are clean IDK I never thought about bed bugs or dust mites till all that stuff came up about it a few years ago. :p I'm more likely to get a new mattress if my back starts to hurt and I attribute it to the mattress not being firm anymore before I would replace it for sanitary reasons. The one we have is over 10 I know that, it's still in pretty good shape. And we don't get itchy or any skin conditions! ;) :p :D

Sorry Bonnie Girl.... it does not matter how clean you are or how often you wash your sheets or pillow cases......
IF your mattress is 10 years old YOU HAVE dust mites!!! That's a FACT........ itchy or not... THEY ARE THERE....

HOPE YOU CAN SLEEP TONIGHT NOW!!
Mace Dolex 12-23-2014, 03:30 PM You mean every night as I go to sleep I might be resting my head on a feces infested pillow?

Only 10% of your head might be feces infested... that's no even noticeable....
Mace Dolex 12-23-2014, 03:47 PM ^ just 10%, oh good I was worried there for a minute.

Just make sure it's the back of your head touching the pillow.... you don't want it near your nose, eyes or ears......

I've never heard such interesting information so I can't not to add a reply into this old topic! And in my case it's the same with pillows, personally I think that such bed stuff (maybe except blankets) can be used for a very long time, especially even if it has high quality :) And in my opinion it's the same with matresses, I think that the most important in their case is how comfortable they are, especially if you have some problems with your back (like I have scoliosis :o ). In this case I like the most of all memory-foam and latex matresses, like in this list from cozzy (https://cozzy.org/best-latex-mattresses/), for example I have this Casper one and it's still comfortable even after many years :D

Besides such changings of matresses every 5 years seem too expensive for me, as also for many other average people :p

My mom said 8 years. I bought my mattress two years ago from Sleepy's and still pass out as soon as I lay on it at the end of the day lol

Yes, my mattress is from 1999 and is still in very good condition. It is a Spring Air pillow top. I turn/flip over the mattress about every 2 months.
MrCleveland 08-04-2017, 07:39 PM If I ever move back in to the house that I grew-up in... I will get a new mattress for the double bed in my mom's room... I have a reason that I refuse to talk about...but many of you all know.
And I also would replace my twin mattress. I want to try the mattresses from The Original Mattress Factory.
Dude111 08-06-2017, 06:58 PM Ya we know buddy... We worry of you slot!!
God bless........
