There was a Washington Post article (http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2014/12/15/the-alcatraz-escapees-could-have-survived-and-this-interactive-model-proves-it/)about scientists from the Netherlands who created a computer-simulated model of the escape from Alcatraz. The model shows that - if they left between 11pm and Midnight, they could have survived (watch for the green dots). (http://siggyf.cartodb.com/viz/31789ef6-7df8-11e4-9574-0e018d66dc29/public_map)

The researchers and the article cite a Mythbusters episode from 2003 that tested whether the prisoners could have survived. However, no one ever mentions the Unsolved Mysteries simulation from 1989!!

Has anyone seen the Mythbusters episode? I didn't know they did this!

What a ripoff! No respect and no justice! UM was robbed! I think I did see part of that Mythbusters episode as well as one on Mysteries at the Museum featuring details about the homemade raft. Either I saw at least part of both of these episodes or I hallucinated it, I don't know, but I know I saw something about it on TV since UM. It's possible that the object on Mysteries at the Museum may have been one of the fake faces.

With Diana Nyad involved, nobody believes it actually happened.

There's no doubt about it: UM is the Rodney Dangerfield of non-fiction TV shows!

Completely OT: I loved that when she did her Dancing With The Stars stint, the ONLY reason I knew her name was because of the UM Alcatraz segment. :happyface

Yeah, UM was where I first learned about the escape and all the planning that the inmates did. Though I agree with the general consensus: the fact that none of the escaped inmates were ever heard from again, points strongly to them being at the bottom of the bay somewhere.
