View Full Version : Quick profiles you wish were full segments
MegtheEgg86 12-15-2014, 02:51 PM As most of you know, occasionally UM would run 30-60 second quick profiles tacked on to the ends of full segments. These profiles were usually somehow similar to the actual feature of the full segment--that is, if the segment was about a bank robber, three different bank robbers might be quickly profiled at the end of the segment. FBI and Special Alerts were also UM features that made use of the quick profile.
I was thinking today that there have been many of those that would've been interesting as full-length segments. Here are a few that come to mind:
-Julie Weflen (missing person)
-Kyle Clinkscales (missing person)
-Christopher Griffin ("romance" swindler)
-Raymond Scoville (murderer)
What about y'all?
justins5256 12-15-2014, 03:00 PM Shannon Smith.
soilentgreen 12-15-2014, 03:09 PM Yeah, I thought that Julie Weflen's disappearance and Michael Cline's flight would have made for good full length segments. Another one would be Tyrom Theis, with all the rumors surrounding his fate.

YES.
I have no doubt it would've been beyond even Kenneth-Robert-Stanton creepy, however.
TheCars1986 12-15-2014, 03:43 PM Can't remember the name of the guy, but it was an FBI alert about a house explosion and the father was missing...then there was a quick update saying that the father's body was found farther away from the house fire and it looked as if it was propelled by an explosion. Always thought that would have been good for a full segment.

YES. That one stuck with me over the years. At first, it seemed like they were fingering the father as a suspect, ala John List. Then the update showed that the dad was actually in the home as well. Sad.

This name is ringing a bell, but I can't place who she is. Is it a mysterious death or a missing person case?

Shannon Smith was an EMT wanted for the rape and molestation of a number of teenage girls. There was an extremely chilling line during the narration: "Smith has stated that seducing underage girls is his hobby."

Sounds like Art Jones. Too bad. It would have been a good one.

What made it especially sickening, is he targeted mentally handicapped/disabled girls too, IIRC. He also kept a diary documenting his experiences. I think it was mentioned that several of his victims attempted suicide.
I would love to know if he ever got caught. Either way, I sincerely hope he's off the street.

I agree about Christopher Griffin. I found an interesting (to an accountant UM fan) article about the case and added it to the UM Wiki, but I'll post the link here as well. The upshot is that one of his victims tried to claim her losses to his scam as a tax write-off.

Another one I always found interesting and wished they had devoted more time to was the case of the Sumter County Does, which was lumped in with the 1987 Dana Point Jane Doe and 1990 Huntington Beach Jane Doe.
WishfulDreamer 12-15-2014, 05:57 PM You guys mentioned all the best ones! The only thing I can add is the remainder of missing persons cases in that quick segment including Julie Weflen and Kyle Clinkscales, as stated above. I would love to see a segment surrounding John Simmons (sadly found murdered. LE refused to take a report and media refused to publicize his case when he was still missing) and Diana Braungardt. Susan Cappel would have made a good case considering her husband and the hitman theory.

Ooo IRS burn. :( Thanks for posting the link! I think these kind of conmen and -women are particularly fascinating. It's not like their victims are ever unintelligent people--in many cases, they're highly successful, well-established individuals--yet they'll fall for something as seemingly preposterous as someone continually asking for money and revealing only later into the relationship that he's at a federal pen in Connecticut. I mean...come on now.
RobinW 12-15-2014, 11:33 PM Christopher Enoch Abeyta, the abducted infant who’s briefly profiled at the end of the Marlene Santana segment. It’s quite an interesting story as Christopher’s father had just moved back into the house after having an affair with another woman, who also had a history of breaking into houses and is the prime suspect in Christopher's disappearance.
Carl Alfred Eder, a prison escapee profiled during the Alcatraz segment. This story is horrifying, as a man picked up Eder hitchhiking, let him stay at his home, and then left him alone with his wife and four children while he went to work the next day. Eder then wound murdering the guy’s entire family and broke out of a minimum security (?!) prison years later! He has not been seen since 1974.
Of course, given how big a following his case has gotten, it’s amazing to remember that the segment on Jason Doe the Grateful Dead Fan was only 30 seconds. I would have loved to have seen a longer segment devoted to him.
wiseguy182 12-16-2014, 07:02 AM Agreed about Julie Weflen, Kyle Clinkscales, Christopher Abeyta, Shannon Smith and Tyrone Theis.
My wishes, off the top of my head:
Carlina White, although decades later there would be a full length movie about her, not to mention an episode of Beyond the Headlines, which I recorded. I'm sure they could have made the re-enactment of her being kidnapped by a woman dressed up as a nurse hella-creepy.
Stefanie Stroh, especially since the lead suspect is also suspected in the Freeman-Bible disappearances, and the disappearance of Juanita Bardin in 1993, who frequented the St. James Hotel.
Patrick Ackles, the boy who went missing from Florida in 1972. There is absolutely NOTHING about him online.
wiseguy182 12-17-2014, 09:19 AM David Borer - perhaps they could explain why it was common for a boy so young to hitchhike so regularly.
Leticia Hernandez and Jessica Gutierrez.

unsolved243 04-13-2018, 12:39 PM Stefanie Stroh, especially since the lead suspect is also suspected in the Freeman-Bible disappearances, and the disappearance of Juanita Bardin in 1993, who frequented the St. James Hotel.
Stefanie's case is very interesting. She had previously gone on a trip to Asia. When she returned, she and a friend went hitchhiking from New York to California, splitting up in Salt Lake City. Stefanie vanished after calling her parents from Wells, Nevada, saying she would be home soon. For some reason, in 1998, it was announced that there was a possible break in the case, but nothing else was released about it.
Then, a few years later, Tommy Sells confesses to killing her. Sells confessed to dozens of murders and he kinda sounds like Henry Lee Lucas and Otis Toole, who both confessed to several murders that they didn't commit. However, it was confirmed that Sells was working for a roofing company in the same town where Stefanie vanished from at the time she was last seen. So, he definitely could have killed her.
However, another article states that investigators have been looking into the possibility that Dale Wayne Eaton was responsible for Stefanie's disappearance (Eaton being Lisa Kimmel's killer and a suspect in Amy Bechtel's disappearance).
Also, interestingly, Juanita Bardin, who was thought to be a victim of Sells, was found last year. Well, she had passed away from natural causes in 2012, but was only identified last year.

I was able to find some articles which stated that Smith was captured in Mesa, Arizona one month after the broadcast thanks to viewers' tips. He pleaded guilty to violating his probation and was sentenced to six years in prison. Unfortunately, that means that he's most likely out now (unless he violated his probation again or committed other crimes since then).
