Mary Ann Mobley, a former Miss America who appeared in films and TV over several decades, has died. Suffering from Crohn’s disease and being treated for Stage 3 breast cancer in 2009, Mobley died on December 9, 2014 at the age of 75.
She was born in Mississippi and educated at the University of Mississippi. Mobley reigned as Miss America in 1959, after which she sought work as an actress. She appeared on TV shows from “Perry Mason” and “Burke’s Law” to “Designing Women.” Other shows on which she appeared include “Fantasy Island,” “Love American Style,” and “Diff’rent Strokes.” She was received a special Golden Globe in 1965, being named New Star of the Year. The following year, Lady Bird awarded her the Outstanding Young Woman of the Year Award for her charitable causes.
Along with her extensive TV work, Mobley appeared in films with such stars as Elvis Presley, Jerry Lewis, Nick Adams, and John Saxon. She worked in two movies with Elvis and recalled him fondly in an August 7, 2008 interview on the Elvis Australia website, stating: “Elvis and I felt a common bond, coming from Mississippi. He thought I understood him. He didn't have to put on airs with me, and I wasn't after anything. This is an odd thing to say about Elvis Presley, but it was like I was working with my brother. We never dated. We were just two people from the same state. The first day I came on the set of ‘Girl Happy,’ in 1964, Elvis got up and he came to me, and he said, 'Hi, I'm Elvis'. Like I didn't know! Elvis said, 'Where is Mary Ann's chair?' All of a sudden a chair appeared with my name on it. That was the beginning of our friendship.”
Mary Ann Mobley was married to TV host Gary Collins from 1967 until his death in 2012. They have one daughter. Mobley and Collins hosted the Miss America pageant in 1989, the 30th anniversary of her reign.
