View Full Version : You think the Fonzie character should have come out that leather jacket by the 80's?

Maybe around 81 after Richie and Ralph and he became more of a family guy? Just looked kind of silly that he had a new lifestyle involving a steady relationship and a kid and he was still dressing like a thug lol

Anyone agree?

Yeah I agree, he was a grown ass man still dressing up as a hoodlum.

Actually that jacket he wore in season 1 would have looked a lot better in the later seasons lol

The leather jacket was pretty iconic to the show and to the Fonz that audiences wouldn't have taken kindly to him going back to that windbreaker.

It don't look like it was needed since he was a family guy in the seasons after he and the guys were not hanging out at Arnold's anymore

By that time, Fonzie should have switched to a denim jacket.

Just looked like the character never matured during the series. Richie and Ralph showed more growth by going to the army wile fonzie was doing nothing but being cool lol

Yeah, Fonzie should have found a new look. it did look silly and dated. And worse, he was a man, who in real life was pushing 40 and was still chasing teenage girls. Kind of icky.

But Happy Days went on way past its past due date and refused to let go of certain conventions like the leather jacket.

Even Mrs. C got a new hairstyle!

The reason for the windbreaker(s) was because the network was concerned that Fonz's hoodlum image would send the wrong message to kids. Garry Marshall caved in. Fonz was only allowed to wear his leather jacket while riding his motorcycle. However, after the show became a hit, the network loosened up and the leather jacket became Fonz's standard wardrobe.

I agree, but the whole show was getting silly at that point.

Fonzie-mania peaked in 1976/77. The show started it's downward slide right after that. Happy Days jumped the shark before Fonzie jumped the shark. After that it became even more silly... Fonzie became a teacher and grew a beard - Gimmie a break!

Seasons 1, 2 and 3 were the very best. Season 4 was good. Season 5 was average. It was no longer watchable after the 5th season.

If Fonzie "came out" of his leather jacket, he'd still be cool, in his Red, White and Blue undershorts, AYYY! AYYYY! OOOOHHHH!

Did you know that Fonzie is a Republican. "My bike likes Ike!

Look how weird Fonz looks without his jacket and WHY are his jeans ironed with a crease and no longer does he wear motorcycle boots?

Don't forget about this awful episode too
American Musical aka Howard's Girlfriend
In Fonzie's defense though, Henry was playing a non Fonz character on Happy Days which did not require him to wear his jacket so he basically looks like Henry who resembles Fonzie in this situation.

In the book Happier Days: Paramount Television's Classic Sitcoms, even Anson Williams admitted that once Ron Howard left, "The magic was gone."

They should have just ended the show when Ron Howard and Donny Most left.
Actually, maybe they should have ended it after the fire. When they rebuilt it, it looked like an English Pub instead of the greatness it used to be.

The Arnold's fire was symbolic to me: It was the end of the original show. Ron & Donny appeared in an episode or two in the new Arnold's, but were gone after that.

Ironically, the last season seven episode aired was one shot before the fire. Kind of weird to have Arnolds burn down, only to have it "back" a couple of episodes later.

Guess they wanted a new Arnold's for the new era of the show

When the show started was it set in the 50's? that would mean when the show ended in the 80's the time period on the show itself was the 60's, did the show ever reference any of the events of those decades?

When the series started, it was circa 1955. When it ended, it was circa 1965. I know they had an entire episode centered around the 1956 Presidential election. There probably were other events mentioned, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

In season seven, there's an episode where Al is fretting over his business and the guys try to come up with ideas to bring the kids back.

Potsie says "We'll get President Kennedy to come and dance with the girls."

So clearly the show had transitioned to the '60s by that point.

That's the episode where Arnolds burned down.
