View Full Version : Cheers staff bolting out the door
Janice 03-16-2002, 07:26 PM I find it amusing how the staff at Cheers just takes off on a minute's notice. Diane or Carla will ask Sam if they can leave for whatever reason, then just whip their aprons off--same goes for Coach and Woody. Sam flies out the door any old time too.
I notice this because I both tended bar and waited tables, and I know what's involved to close out your shift. You've got money and bar checks that have to be tallied and cashed out, tables or patrons to be turned over to your co-workers, etc.
I know it's only a show and I just love Cheers, but I can't help but notice it. I also live in Boston so it's really funny to me how the staff at a busy Boston bar can just leave so quickly.
Only on television I guess, lol.
Diane Chambers-Malone 03-16-2002, 08:29 PM  I guess that is true. I never noticed it...LOL...usually I am too engrossed in the storyline to notice. Funny comment though.

Chocoholic 03-17-2002, 04:29 AM I wish I could just bolt from my job like that some days (i.e. every frickin' shift I work!!!)
sammyanddiane 03-17-2002, 03:31 PM hey i know, when i watch CHEERS I AM COMPLETLLY IN ANOTHER WORLD SINCE I BECOME VERY VERY VERY INVOLVED IN WHATEVER IT IS THAT I AM DOING,I just really get into it all maybe since we want to suspend our disbelief we don,t notice anything, but i know what you are aiming at yeah i know it is not really realistic, but then it,s tv,I don,t work in a bar and i don,t know much about it,but i still know that you can,t just leave work like that yeah it is amuzing,Cheers is just a tv show, but i really love it it is a special tv show, but i guess every tv show has it,s fault, but it doesn,t make a serious differance really to myself personally, but yeah it is rather funny, glad you pointed it out,I think it is due somewhat to the timing and the pace and situation, but i guess it,s a mystery,tv world is a strange place, hahaha just kidding, but doesn,t change my love of the show, cool you saw it though, stange but trues LOL CHEERS!
sammyanddiane 03-17-2002, 03:36 PM I WOULD LIKE TO GO THERE SOON,BUT I DOUBT THAT WILL EVER HAPPEN SOON THOUGH,BUT I AM PLANNING ON DOING SOME SMALL TRAVELING SOON DURING THE SUMMER AND MAYBE I WILL GET A CHANCE TO SEE IT,I wish i lived closer than i do to it and then it would be really really really easy for me to get there i would think, sometimes i wish i lived in the usa and then it would just be so much more eaier for me to get to my destination boston LOL
DTF955 03-18-2002, 10:13 AM Funny you should mention that, I'm usually very good at making things realistic in my writing. However, in writing my "Cheers" fanfiction, I got so involved in dong the story the way it would be done on "Cheers," I had everyone leave, and *nobody* was placed in charge, and nobody was behind the bard. LOL. Really weird for me.
As for why nobody ever acted drunk on the show, that's not so odd. Sam's a former alcoholic, so my hunch is there was an unmentioned limit on the number of drinks that anyone could have. And, he probably watched (or others watched) very carefully to make sure nobody ever got totally soused. After all, he could probably have done a seminar on the warning signs.
BTW, I went in "Cheers" with my parents in 1991 when we were on vacation in Boston, the one whose marquis is shown on the show. ISTR they had cutouts of Norm and Cliff sitting at their familar barstools. I don't drink, but I got a soda pop and maybe some pretzels or something. It was a nice place. Boston's a very nice vacation spot.
Samsgirl xo 03-18-2002, 04:41 PM im trying to shoot for going this spring break for me.. 2 weeks.. you do not understand how much i wanna go!
Diane Chambers-Malone 03-18-2002, 05:20 PM On Chambers VS Malone, in the beginning before the song, Sam walks up to a table of I think 4 men and tells them that they have been drinking alot, and that he will make them coffee. Then they argue about who the designated driver was supposed to be, and then Sam calls a cab for them. So, the drunkiness was brought up. I think they added that for a purpose...maybe as a message to the public carefully woven into the story?
Samsgirl xo 03-18-2002, 05:33 PM yea.. it was hidden messages.. and yea Norm was never drunk! lol, see they took it from a humor perspective
