Exclusive: George Eads to Exit "CSI" After 15 Seasons

by Adam Bryant

"CSI" is losing another veteran team member.

George Eads, who has played the role of CSI Nick Stokes since the series' pilot, will exit the show at the conclusion of the current season, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively.

Sources say Eads' departure was amicable and that his character's exit will be connected to the resolution of the Gig Harbor Killer case. However, it remains unclear exactly how his character will be written out of the series.

Eads, who took an extended leave of absence last season after a behind-the-scenes dustup, is the last remaining original cast member on the show.

His exit follows those of William Petersen and Gary Dourdan (Season 9), Marg Helgenberger (Season 12) and Paul Guilfoyle, who ended his run last season. Jorja Fox, who is a regular in the current cast, joined the series in its second episode and made only recurring appearances during Seasons 9 and 10.

Both Eads and Fox were temporarily fired from the show in 2004 after they failed to show up to set at the beginning of Season 5 as part of a reported salary dispute. Eads maintained that he simply overslept. Both were eventually reinstated into the cast.

CBS recently trimmed "CSI's" order for this season to 18 episodes to make room for spin-off "CSI: Cyber" as well as other midseason dramas.

Sources say Eads' exit is unrelated to the episode order and neither have any impact on the possibility for future seasons. Eads had no official statement on his departure.

The show went downhill quick when William Petersen left but with this new news, it will surely hit rock bottom. George Eads has a big fan following.

I'm looking forward to "CSI: Cyber", I'll give it a try to see how I like it.

^^They haven't announced it officially.

I am sad that George Eads has to be the one to leave the original CSI show, but I think they're trying to cut costs to get the series renewed for a 16th and final season. The original CSI has to be wrapped up in some fashion, with either a 16th season or a two-hour movie (if there can't be a 16th season), and it will be a tragedy if it doesn't.

If CSI gets cancelled with no series finale, I'll blame the following: Stalker (which airs on CSI's old Wednesday timeslot and got a full-season order), CSI: Cyber (I won't be watching that show, why order this spin-off series if the original series's ratings are declining?), and the success of the four new CBS dramas this season and the faith that the network has in any new drama series for next season.

Showrunner Don McGill says of Sunday's departure: "I think there [was] a really great emotional kind of tear jerker ending, even as we have a little bit of a cliffhanger going. I hope people will really embrace the duality of that finale."
