"Sullivan & Son" Cancelled by TBS After Three Seasons

November 20, 2014

The slate overhaul at TNT and TBS continues. TBS has cancelled comedy series "Sullivan & Son" after three seasons.

"Sullivan & Son" and "Men at Work" were TBS’ first original comedy series to take hold, both going to three seasons after making it to the air in 2012. "Men at Work" was cancelled in May, with transplant "Cougar Town" also wrapping its run on the network.

This leaves "Ground Floor", which debuted this past summer and was renewed for a second season, as the only returning TBS original scripted series in 2015 when it will be joined by newbies "Buzzy’s", "Angie Tribeca" and "Your Family or Mine".

Created by Steve Byrne and showrunner Rob Long, "Sullivan & Son" took place in a legendary neighborhood bar in a working-class Pittsburgh neighborhood.

It centered on Steve Sullivan (Byrne), the son of the bar’s current owner (Dan Lauria) and the grandson of its founder who surprises his Irish-American father and Korean-American mother (Jodi Long) when he decides to leave his job as a successful corporate attorney in New York and return to take over the bar.

The most recent third season averaged 1.6 million viewers and a 0.6 rating in adults 18-49, down 21% and 26%, respectively, from Season 2.

so TBS is basically going to be new American Dad + reruns of Seinfeld, BBT and Friends.

Surprised it managed to last 3 seasons, how many episodes did each season have?

So many wonderful characters on that show and it was so cute and funny - I am truly surprised.

So I checked and it looks like only 33 episodes were made (10, 10, 13), yeah that's not even enough for daily syndication so those fans out there better hold onto your DVD sets since TBS might not even air the show in reruns.

This show is one of those "could have been good" shows.

I loved the actress who played the mother, Jodi Long. She nailed that character down, and she acted like a Korean woman would. Dan Lauria is always good to see in any show and was a good laid back husband character to the uptight and mean Korean mother. The half Asian character and the Asian sister (with Ken Jeong as the husband.

Negatives...do away with the bar. Also, dump ALL the bar characters with the possible exception of Brian Doyle Murray. The other characters were awful and annoying. Owen was horrible. Christine Ebersole was horrible. The black and arab buddies, horrible. The nice looking girlfriend, mail carrier, awful! The dude who played Owen and Ebersole were especially cringe worthy.

If this were my show, I would get rid of the bar and all those characters altogether, and not had any bar characters, save maybe Doyle-Murray as a recurring character and foil for the Korean wife, and centered the series more as a family comedy with a Asian/White dynamic. That would have been a good series.
