This means for more and more people, Thanksgiving will be simply a "Banker's Holiday" along with Martin Luther King Day, President's Day, Colombus Day and Veteran's Day. THIS HAS GOT TO STOP!!! I didn't mind when Stores opened at 4:00 on Friday Morning right after Thanksgiving (I used to call this "The National Day of Insanity) but this has been swept away by corporate greed.

I urge all of you to NOT Patronize any store on Thanksgiving itself, and if you are a store employee and have been told you have to work on Thanksgiving I urge you to call in "sick" on Thanksgiving Day. I used to enjoy "Black Friday", but now its just another day. :rip:

If I were in the President's shoes I'd address the nation on Thanksgiving Eve, and Urge all store employees who are told they have to work on Thanksgiving to call in "sick" (and consider it a "civic duty" to do so) and if anyone got fired I'D PARDON THEM!!! That way they couldn't be fired.

Thanksgiving is America's very own holiday and shouldn't be tampered with. I never shop on Thanksgiving and I pity the poor workers who have to work.On "Black Friday" I stay home and put up my Christmas tree and spend the weekend decorating for Christmas.:tree: I always have and I always will:santa:

I got a look at the Facebook page. I'm not happy with what I've seen. Some Malls threaten retailers with $1,000.00+ an hour if they don't open on Thanksgiving. :angryfire. I may be a Republican (AND PROUD OF IT) but I hope people will picket the the stores that are open or better yet, stop their cars at freeway interchanges and tie up traffic for miles around. Some times you just have to fight fire with fire! This Nation was found by people who had the GUTS to TAKE A STAND in their beliefs. We need to be "We The People" NOT "We The Sheeple". :rolleyes:

I'm kind of sad the tradition of Thanksgiving is falling by the waysides too! Penny Lane is right. it is OUR holiday. The United states of America. We should make it a day of rest from outside stress and fighting with crowds at stores. ( cooking, eating and watching the Macy's parade, the dog show with John O'Hurley and football). Mace is right about sometimes dealing with annoying relatives, but oh well, they are our loved ones after all! But I for one am never going to shop that day! Even Black Friday I don't go shopping either. I rest and eat leftovers! We have gone out to the movies on Black Friday though, but I'll be darned if I ever fight crowds and corporate greed and shop that day.

As for working on Thanksgiving, should be on a TOTAL volunteering base. People who really need money and don't care to have a traditional day with turkey and family! Those who like Thanksgiving should NOT be made to work!

I Hear You MrCLEVELAND! Thanks to my mammoth video collection I always recreate what Black Friday was like 40+ years ago, when I was a kid (The stores opened at their NORMAL times on Black Friday, and were CLOSED on Sundays, even on Thanksgiving weekend). I always begin with the animated movie The Man Called Flintstone at 9:00 AM, then watch a bunch of cartoons until 4:00 PM, when I watch Hey There! It's Yogi Bear! (That Evening I watch The Polar Express which, ironically I purchased on Black Friday, 2005).

I'm keeping my eyes on Home Depot and Lowes to see what they are going to do via the BF websites (I need a New Lawnmower, the one I have "died on me last month :rip:) If either of are going to open on Thanksgiving I will not spend ONE RED CENT on them, even if it means I have to purchase a Mower at a higher price this spring.

I could understand that logic. But I believe like this. It all depends on who you go with. If you go Black Friday shopping with good people and take your time and are respectful to other people than you can have a good time.

But if you hang with people that punch and kick and basically turns into a Wrestling match, well that ruins the whole experience. I also think that day is where the deals are and maybe families only have x amount of dollars to spend.

I've suggested this on other sites that those who have stores in the mall and are being forced to open on Thanksgiving (Some are being threatened with heavy fines if they don't open) should refuse to comply ON RELIGIOUS GROUNDS. Store managers who are Jewish or Islamic have done this, and when their managers attempted to fine, sue and/or evict them because they refused to open on days they consider holy (Sundown Friday to Sundown Saturday for Jews, Sundown Thursday to Sundown Friday for Muslims). these shopkeepers fought back and WON their lawsuits. If they can do it there's no reason Christians can do it, anything less is :angryfireHYPOCRISY!!!:angryfire

I appreciate your sentiments,and yes, this would be nice. But realistically I don't think it will happen. I love Thanksgiving the way Tony loves Halloween and the crass commercialism around my favorite holiday sickens me.

My feelings toward the big retailers are not as kindly as yours; I bet many employees get strong-armed into working this holiday. Yet, I'm sure there are folks who don't mind working it as well. I've made a personal decision not to shop on Thanksgiving Day whatsoever and only to a minimal degree on Black Friday.

Another thing that we've missed is many restaurants are open on Thanksgiving. Many people dine out on holidays which is nice for the cook. My sister waitressed at Bob Evans for years. At that time (the '70's) the restaurant was closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas but open on Easter in which she HAD to work. No volunteers there! I have always felt bad for those servers who are stuck working holidays. :(

It was bad enough when stores would open up at 5 Pm the day after, but now, they're brazen and greedy enough to just open on Thanksgiving and to hell with their employees spending their holidays off with family and friends.

I think it's disgusting and sad that greed has won out over people having a holiday off to relax and enjoy the day.

I don't know why Thursday was chosen but in most cases it's a 4 day weekend Thursday-Sunday.(school vacation, most work places) So we do get a long weekend out of it:)

Yeah it is great!;) If it was on a Monday, it would just be a three day weekend. And if we ate the big meal on Monday and back to work or school on Tuesday!! NAH!!!! Too full and tired!!! :(

Remember Memorial day wasn't always on a Monday with a three day weekend. Before 1971 it was on May 30, regardless of what day that fell on. So it was just one random day off of work or school.:) Unless it happened to fall on a Friday or Monday it would be a three day weekend :)

Some people are listing e-mails of the owners or landlords who are forcing their tenants to be open on Thanksgiving. I've suggesting doing something BETTER than that. List their SNAIL MAIL (Home) Addresses instead. Have you ever heard of Alan Ralsky? In 2002 Mr. Ralsky was in the business of sending advertisements to people's e-mail accounts (That's :angryfire SPAM :angryfire for those of you in Rio Linda! :D) in numbers so large they were causing peoples computers to crash. A Detroit Newspaper interviewed this clown, and he mentioned he had just purchased a mansion in an upscale suburb north of Detroit, Michigan. People, many of whom were incensed with coping with large amounts of Spam on their e-mails found out where his house was and retaliated! They sent e-mails that listed Mr. Ralsky's home ("Snail Mail") address to their friends, who then forwarded these messages to their friends and so on. These people in return placed Mr Ralsky's name on every third-class mailing list they could find. One evening Mr, Ralsky returned home to discover a US Mail Semi parked in front of his home, and postal workers unloading mailbag after mailbag of "Junk Mail" at his door! It was like the climax scene in the original Miracle on 34th Street, but in reverse! The next day EVEN MORE Mail was deposited to his door, and there was nothing he could do about it. Federal Law dictates that third-class mail may only be delivered to the address listed, and the person who listed on that address was responsible for the contents of that mail. Too add insult to injury he couldn't leave the bags in front of the house for the garbage men to take away (If you've seen a Mailbag there's a message printed saying "Property of the US Postal Service, all other use prohibited". The Spammer got a dose of his own medicine! This needs to be done again, this time to these greedy owners and landlords, not just one but to as many as can be found. I worked on Thanksgiving once. Even though I worked until 6 p.m., I had a chance to spend it with my family...and yes...it was a retail store called Discount Drug Mart!
